Diamondback's Carson Storch nearly had to call time on his Rampage long before the event even kicked off, with a broken collarbone while at Crankworx derailing the Oregon rider's plans. The train didn't come off the tracks, though, with Storch taking the recovery seriously enough to earn his doctor's permission to send it just a week prior to leaving for Utah. ''I just tried to get on it really good. You know, diet and I have a really good PT guy at home that help with the process, and I just worked as hard as I could,'' he said of the healing process that left nearly no time to spare.

Heal he did, though, returning to Rampage to re-work the same line as last year. ''I teamed up with Kyle Jameson and Ryan Howard, and we used the top half of our line from last year, and then as soon as we got off the ridge we built a bunch of new stuff leading into the YT jump,'' Storch said of his plans for the 2015 edition. ''We definitely came back to expand on what we did last year but to also step it up. We made some changes and tried to go a little bigger with it.'' It wasn't meant to be, though, as a mistake during practice took out the newly signed Red Bull rider. After working hard to come back from a broken collarbone, it wasn't anything massive that took Storch out of the event, but rather a relatively tame hip jump and a slight speed miscue.
Carson Storch

''I was riding the YT jump and having a good session on that, and I came into the hip and felt like my speed was good. I cased it super bad and got pitched over the handlebar and into a ravine. It was a weird fall; a little lapse of judgment, I guess. I should have taken my time.'' It turned out to be a costly mistake for Storch as he sprained an ankle bad enough that there was no way he could compete, let alone even try to qualify.
bigquotesI tried to ride practice in the morning, but it was too painful. This isn't the place to go to the top when you're not feeling one hundred percent.
That said, being on the sidelines wasn't enough to keep a smile off of Storch's face throughout the week, although that grin might have had something to do with him signing for Red Bull. ''It's been almost a year of trying. I'm stoked to be part of the Red Bull team,'' he said of the news.

Carson Storch giving a few runs at a few lower small jumps to test out his ankle. He decided to pull the plug and won t be seeing him tomorrow in finals. He trained incredibly hard after breaking his collarbone at Crankworx this year just to be healthy at Rampage. Big things are on the horizon for Carson and will be back soon enough.

Carson's Custom DB8

Standing ten or fifteen feet away from Carson's bike, or just far enough to not be able to read the hot patch on the Diamondback's tires, would probably have you believing that his DB8 is nothing too interesting. Some custom graphics, yes, but the bike's lines are identical to the 200mm travel, 27.5'' wheeled production model. But despite appearing to be the same, there's actually some major differences between the production bike and Carson's custom Rampage weapon.

Carson Storch s Bike

An up close look reveals that he's actually rolling on 26" wheels and questioning the newly signed Red Bull athlete saw him admit to his DB8 being a prototype frame designed around smaller wheels and to Carson's needs. ''I basically asked for the shortest rear-end as possible, give or take a couple other geo changes to make it feel like a big slope bike,'' he said of his wishlist for a beastly Rampage sled. And since Diamondback had originally designed the DB8 around 26" wheels, it probably wasn't a big reach to get Carson the machine he wanted for Rampage.

He didn't provide an exact number for the bike's chainstay length, but you can bet that the 26" wheels allow it to be quite a bit shorter than the 451mm length that the 27.5" wheeled production bike (pictured to the right) sports. A shorter rear end, as well as the smaller diameter wheels, allows the bike to be spun around with less effort, which is kind of important when you're trying to spin threes off of cliffs in the desert. Carson also said that he requested a 520mm top tube length, which is much more compact than 559mm and 584mm numbers for the short and long sized production bikes, and also short for Storch's 5'10" height.
Diamondback DB8 2015

All that makes for a bike with a much shorter wheelbase than stock and probably one that's also not going to be comfortable for most riders, but Carson's downsized DB8 is surely easier to handle when it comes to doing slopestyle moves on a big travel bike.

Carson Storch s Bike

Custom frame and smaller wheels aside, the rest of Carson's basic setup very much mirrors what we've seen other competitors using. His SR Suntour RUX fork is running more air pressure and added rebound damping compared to his usual go-to setup, and the bike's DVO shock is fitted with a 550 in/lb titanium coil from Lite-Spring, complete with a custom fade color added to it. ''It's good to run really wide tires in Utah to kind of float on top of the loose dirt. I run the Kenda Honey Badger DH tires,'' he explained about his rubber choice, going on to say that they're pumped up to just over 30 PSI. ''Rampage is the last place you want to skimp on a few grams and run tubeless.''

He's not the pnly one riding a custom 26"er.
Zink and others have been riding a custom 26" YT Tues becouse of the maneuverability benefits and there are rumers that it might go into production
I for one like this.
Bring back the 26" Park/Freeride bike!
  • 8 1
yeah i've got one, a yt-ind noton pro 2, its a shame they stopped making it this year
  • 31 3
 Kona process 167 looks sick
  • 9 7
zink and others were riding 27.5 production frame with 26 inches wheels..
  • 11 0
BlazeNawaY 100% agreed! 26 may not be suited to everyone's needs but for bike park/freeride it's the way to go!
  • 9 1
"An up close look reveals that he's actually rolling on 26" wheels" Yeah, cause 27.5 is so much better for Rampage.....not!
  • 23 0
Come on bike companies, the riders want it. the consumers want it, bring 26'' back! Oh and congrats to Carson for signing with RedBull, well deserved.
  • 7 2
yea thats true like it were we the costumers that asked for 27.5. nooo we didnt. so hard to find a 26now. and now i already feel how big my wheels are. with even bigger ones i will hardly being able to corner well... and also i just dont like it i am not the tallest so i dont need big wheels at all. i dont even need 200mm susp. my single crown can easly do 25 ft drops, and that will myabe happen like once... ever. i just hope we will still have choice to have 26 in future but i blieve it will never die
  • 6 4
Haha whimps. Bring on the freeride 29ers!!!!
  • 13 3
I like my 27.5 bike. please don't lynch me
  • 6 0
@hardyk zinks tues has a custom rear triangle and headset angle to better suite the 26" wheels. Putting 26" wheels on a 27.5 bike makes it handle like crap
  • 6 0
Yeah a lot of people prefer 27.5 which I'm sure is great for tech downhill etc. if i were racing id go 27.5 for sure but for freeride and whipping and spinning and ease of manoeuvrability 26 is my choice. Just saying they should keep offering both to keep us all happy!
  • 6 1
Very careful scanning of as many bikes of the Rampage as i can see and i count at least 10 bikes on 26",i can't make out a lot of them so i'm reckoning a lot more than 10 of the 38 bikes in total were on 26",now is it just me but if i see a pro rider on 26 and he gets paid (in a way) to say 27.5 is better, then why is he on 26" ?,Newtons 3rd law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, therefore there IS a market for 26" and also a market for 27.5",why can't we have both ? because the industry see's our cash as theirs before we've even earned it!!!
  • 11 0
Gotta have both, use what's best for the situation at hand, if I could have one of each it'd be:

27.5 -DH & enduro racing, AM
26-freeride/slope &DJ/park/DH (&AM)
(29- xc racing, AM and some enduro race venues?)

Seems like which AM bike I pick these days depends on how gnarly it is, or how hard the climb is, or how long the ride is too. So I guess my goal in life is to have 12 bikes listed above , hell ya!!!

Should have told the Claw not to run tubeless and he might have got a first run in. Love the 8 inch travel BMX theme in the geo.

Carson Storch is what Mountain biking is about. See that f*cking smile everyone, yeah thats what you should like when you go riding. This guy is always just in the happiest mood, you can tell he just loves every minute of this sport.

I cant believe how many f*ck off faces I see in places like Whistler... like f*ck dude, its a Monday, 11am and you are riding your DH bike at the Disney Land for bikes... But yet you look like you found out your Girlfriend was banging your neighbor...

Even happens on the local trails at times, would it kill you to f*cking smile once in a while? or even just say Hi back? I mean shit you won the Birth Lottery and live in a country that just allows you to do activities like this and your financially stable enough to afford a sick trail shredding bike, BE HAPPY!!!!!

Yeah 75% of the riders you will come across are super stoked and just loving life... but that other 25% can go right f*ck em selves... or maybe your Girlfriends side dude can help ya out...

Alright, Rant over...

I bought myself a DB8 just as a quick and easy option after selling a Tr500 I had for a shop demo.... sold the Tr500 thinking I'd be picking up a Lapierre 727 in a few weeks... well, turns out, the Lappy still ain't in my hands few months later now... BUT, in the meantime, I'm totally diggin' that DB8. I love the feel of the bike

 How's riding in NH Xjohn?
I used to attend NEC (Henniker) for my first two years of college ---this dates back waaaaay before mountain bikes became what they are today but, I did a shit load of road riding in the mountains. love the back country roads in NH
  • 2 0
NH is great. One of the great places you can have a trail bike, DH bike, road bike and fat bike and get a ton of use out of all of them without going too far from home! My gf still doesn't understand why I need 4 bikes though.
  • 6 0
Diamond Back is the last name I thought I would see under a Rampage rider.

I didn't realize DB made higher-end-ish bikes, I thought they were/are mostly a department store brand.

Too bad he sprained his ankle. Must suck to prepare so much, then crash in practice. Maybe next year bro!
  • 6 0
Kelly McGarry was riding for them for a long time before he switched over to YT. He was using their DH bike that was available outside the US. He back flipped the canyon in 2013 on one.

they're still a crappy company though, they don't stand behind their warranties, i know from personal experience.
  • 6 0
I own one of the 2014 Mission frames from Diamondback. Due to my own ignorance I accidentally broke one of the rear pivot bolts during a maintenance.

I called Diamondback the same day and talked to someone who was able to find the replacement part and shipped it to me for free on the same day no questions asked.

They didn't seem like they had a large department for warranties like you would see from other manufacturers, but they were exceptionally fast with their service, and very polite.

I cant speak on the behalf of @carrnage 's experience, but from this very recent warranty experience I can't really stress how awesome they were, especially since it was my own fault and they sent me the part for free regardless.

Also have to say that their newer bikes are very well built, and I couldn't be happier buying a frame from them.
  • 4 0
I own 5 high end DB bikes and have only had similar experiences to this. It's nice to know that even a bike company driven mostly by commodity sales is still run by die hard bike people who understand the lifestyle and they still put good time into make sick bikes that most people don't even know about!
  • 1 0
Well a good company would back their low end frames too. I broke one when I was a little grom and they refused to honor the warranty even though it was still a year until the warranty period ended. Left me bikeless and almost lost my love for the sport. Proud to rock a santa cruz and YT now. Those are two companies that actually stand behind their product and support the up and comers

520mm top tube length! I'd nut myself on the stem just throwing a leg over it.
  • 7 5
It is so ridiculous that PinkBIke keeps calling 650b/27" wheels 27.5 ... go 26" maybe people will start to remember, and realize, that 26 wheels make for a snappier, nimbler ride, faster acceleration, stronger and ... weight less.
  • 6 1

  • 8 4
Looks like he's the only one that Red Bull actually helped out this rampage.
  • 3 3
Everyone throwing a fit that they can't get a 26" wheeled bike anymore. Trek was selling 26" aluminum and carbon sessions last year along side their 27.5".. yet they didn't sell, so they didn't release new ones this year because they have so much left over 26" inventory. Hmmm... seems like you 26" fans did this to yourself, not the industry. They sell what you buy and you didn't buy 26". #justwanttohate #whinersgonnawhine
  • 4 0
they price gouged the session park with a TERRIBLE build, no FRAME ONLY option, and shit, some people hate trek. More 26" industry advertising, events being based around JAMS vs competitions (allowing 26" fun, not, 'straight line everything' 650B)

26 for the underground
  • 2 0
Trek hater here. Fuck Giant and the big S too. Blame the Tall poppy syndrome.
  • 1 0
 point taken..what do you recommend?
  • 1 0
Kona Duh! But I do salivate over Santa Cruz and Nicolai. Not saying Giant, Trek and Spesh don't make great bikes I just don't like their style, ideology or any of the shops I've been to that sell them or a bunch of the people that ride them (pro's excluded). I prefer smaller bike companys that have a MTB focus preferably from B.C. Kona is big enough that they are (or were) decently priced at least in North America. A lot of my favourite riders do or have ridden for them and they make free ride bikes and were one of the first to sell a slopestyle bike. They sponsored all my favourite movies when I started. Oh and they f*cking shred.
