Buy a Foot of Singletrack For $5

Dec 5, 2013

Press Release

Buy 1 foot of singletrack for $5 and you could win your choice of any complete Santa Cruz Bicycle. This won’t just be any bike; it will be decked out with a wheel set from ENVE Composites, a group from Shimano, and a Fox Racing Shox fork. You will also be the proud new owner of a 1-year season pass for shuttle rides at Yuba Expeditions.

Putting Your Money In The Dirt

The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, along with partners Santa Cruz Bicycles and Yuba Expeditions, is proud to announce another “5 Bucks A Foot” campaign. Up for grabs this time is the eventual winner’s choice of ANY Santa Cruz bicycle, along with ONE YEAR’s worth of free shuttles courtesy of Yuba Expeditions! Every purchased foot of singletrack is an opportunity to win, and this time the phones are open from Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) through January 6th.

The $5 a foot campaigns have proven very popular, both with our membership and our partners. The response continues to grow larger with each event, which in turn allows us to leverage progressively bigger and more dazzling giveaways. Each time though, the message is the same: “With your help, we are turning money into singletrack.” To that end, the combined campaigns have raised over $150,000, generated 20 miles of new trail, and given away $30,000 worth of fun.

These events present an opportunity for some lucky soul to score an amazing bike and a whole pile of free rides uphill, but they are crucially important to us here at the stewardship. Five bucks a foot is a tangible idea that our members can get behind – that of funding being allocated directly into trail building efforts. This funding is growing increasingly important for us. Building trail, aside from being hard physical work, is expensive. Especially when that trail is being built to a high standard and expected to last for generations. Meanwhile, Federal Grant money and public revenue sources are thinning out, and non-profits everywhere are feeling the pinch. In response, we rely on our membership, our volunteers, and a motivated public donation base.

We can never thank you, our backbone of supporters, enough. But we’ll keep on saying it. Thank you! What we can do, with all our heart, is continue building and maintaining world-class trails in this gem of a region, and every once in a while kick down with some similarly world-class hardware and a guaranteed good time.

So again, thank you! We look forward to seeing you in the dirt, where we’ll be busy sculpting your money into sweet singletrack.

How It All Works
At the end of the campaign, each unique $5 donation will be entered to win. If you donate $20, you get four entries. We then go over to the very cool random.org website and enter in the ticket numbers, whereby random.org selects one at random and WE HAVE OURSELVES A WINNER! Winner will be selected on January 6th.

Knowing my luck I probably won't win, but I found a quarter today, so I've got that going for me, which is nice.

Oh man oh man, i wish i had me a quarter

Hey. At least on your deathbed you'll receive total consciousness.

Jokes aside this is a worthy cause. The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship has done so much for mountain biking in the Sierras. Real honest to god straight up mountain biking trails being opened and maintained on a regular basis. They are a model for how to coexist with the community, land managers, and trail users of all types. Buy a foot, then come to Downieville and enjoy your patronage.

I don't care if $5 a foot seems like a steep price, I'll do anything to support Downieville. Favorite place I've ever ridden so far and the shuttles prices are super reasonable.

 A real $5 footlong!

 You beat me to it!

 1 foot = 0.000189394 mile = $5 dollars

to build a 5 mile trail (26,400 ft), you need... $132,000, your odds of winning would be: 26,400:1
to build a 10 mile trail (52,800 ft), you need... $264,000 your odds of winning would be: 52,800:1
to build a 20 mile trail (105,600 ft), you need... $528,000 your odds of winning would be: 105,600:1

is it worth the odds?

Yes, since the real prize is the new trail getting built. Gambling is a tax on people who are bad at math, but at the same time when the community benefits we all do, even if it is in a very small way.

I want to start a not for profit that travels around doing fundraising for trails. I know IMBA does something like this, but I would make something that was only devoted to making trails in communities that are shred-poor so that weaker bike communities could grow stronger, instead of strong communities giving half of their money to IMBA to get some help.
I think I'd call it Super TRAC (trail riding action commitee).
I don't really know how to get this idea off the ground, but if anyone does then we really should. We could even donate money to politicians who are bike friendly.

I was with you right up until you suggested donating money to politicians.

I think it is the only way to get big money. George W rides a Trek after all. (Not that I'd have funded his election.)
The real deal is that I don't think IMBA does enough. The sierra club sends out emails to every college student about how the forests need to be saved and a bunch of kids jump on the band wagon, writing their senator. Suddenly the forest gets closed to biking!
I say the only way to fight back is to buy our own politicians.

The Sierra Nevada range is Cali's untapped MTB mecca in the making. Not to mention Downieville is one of true Northern Cal's classic riding areas. This cause is legit, and if you cant spare 5 bones to help us get our shred on then log off your computer and get your ass to work!!! PS, I hear Subway is accepting applications!

I've kicked in for a few extra feet!! I'd do so and have without a potential "prize" ..... it's damn cool of Santa Cruz bikes to dangle a nice bike in front of us, and people work hard for these trails...........money sent, contest entered!! ........

Buy enough to maybe put your new bike on it. Quick personal note, at $5 a foot I could have earned enough to buy my new SC bike with the trail I built this summer. However, there were no complaints when I rode my Nomad on that trail. Here's to a possible V10!
  • 5 2
Man i would definitely donate 50 if i knew i would win and i would definitely choose a V10
  • 9 0
I'm pretty sure anyone that is right in the mind would too....
