Hill and Fairclough Custom D3s for South Africa

Mar 12, 2012
by Tyler Maine
Sam Hill’s D3 paint job was born out of an early morning when Troy couldn’t sleep, Sam had hit us up about doing something for his world cup lid for 2012. Sam did not know what he wanted to go after so he left it to Troy to do what he does best; Create. At 4am he rode his bike over to the TLD laguna store/design center to sketching out a Sam Hill helmet. He pulled out his lowrider photo books for inspiration on style and starting wrapping a stock D3 to create a blank canvas. An hour later, Troy has one of the most elaborate paint schemes laid out and brought it out to Corona headquarters that morning.

Anton Henggono, one of our designers, started rendering the helmet out on the computer according to Troy drawing on the helmet and talking to Troy about the design inspiration. When Sam received the helmet drawings and images of completed helmet he simply said “Oh man, that is the sickest helmet ever! I can’t wait to be shredding in that thing”.

Brendan Fairclough’s helmet was derived from when Brendan spent a few weeks here in so cal. He wanted something to match his Neon yellow kit, so we started with a stock ZAP D3. Brendan wanted to throw in some candy dark blue to also match his SE PRO kit, a little country pride on top and his energy drink sponsor MONSTER logos to finish it off. Simple, clean and fast looking, “Man, that looks amazing, I’m going to be the flashiest guy on the hill!”.

There you have it, the first of many sick lids to come out of Troy Lee Designs in 2012.

Dare I say it, ruined by the Monster Logo?

It is a bit like a nasty rash that gets everywhere yet it just doesn't integrate as neatly or as iconically as many other logo's that have graced helmets and other sports equipment over the years.

I don't know man I'd be proud to have a monster logo professionally air brushed on my helmet, but I can see where you are coming from.

I wanna get a d3 customly painted!! I never knew they could do that in house. But I can't even afford a tld helmet let alone the paint job. That's why I work at a shop! Big Grin

In my opinion it's a sick logo, it just needs to be implemented properly. On both of those helmets it was added as an afterthought, and that was where the problem came from.

Anyone else think that brendog's hasn't had as much effort put into it as sams? Don't get me wrong there both beautifull helmets but brendans is just a production one with some bits changed, sams is a whole new design and looks completely unique. Non the less i am just EXTREMELY jelous.

Less is sometimes more. I'd much rather have Brendan's lid any day over Sam's one

the only thing i dont quite like is the shadowy effect round the monster logo. so nice still...

(Here comes the hate) But Why do these guys helmets always have to be so busy?

Well you see Chris, if you over shred the high alpine hair pins and superman 150 ft to you untimely demise the man in the copter cam is gonna say "He's OK! I can see his helmet is still on!" Only the paramedics will realise the oversized polychromatic sphere is your melon.....True storey!!!

 haha, what the...?

@Chris, I'm with you. less is more.

Sam's helmet is gorgeous. It's super reminiscent of old school custom moto helmets. So sick.

troy lee has some amazing detail and bling to their designs, not to mention their solid rep', but i've always hated how cluttered and haphazard the artwork is from an overall perspective - less IS more!

theres just so many better looking lids out there on the market (if you even care about looks) especially mx lids

A production replica without monster logos would be cool!

What happened to the Specialised Dissident?
Is it not ready for production yet?
  • 4 0
Troy seems to be rocking the Specialized helmet, I'm guessing Sam and Brendan would rather stick with their long time helmet sponsor TLD.
  • 2 0
considering brendan does not ride for specialized any more it would be pretty surprising for him to wear the dissident over the D3

So busy, and so many clashing motifs. My favourite helmets always have an element of simplicity . . .

Both are awesome and I dont even like tooo much design that feel clogged to me (Sam Hill´s) , but this time, I think both look AWESOME, I want a Brendog´s Replica!
