In late November of 2013, Pinkbike’s Karl Burkat called me to introduce me to a new initiative that Pinkbike was pushing called “Share the Ride”, which was focused on getting disadvantaged youth on new bikes. I was intrigued and very much wanted to be a part of what the Pinkbike team was putting together. My hope was to spin it locally. Karl then introduced me to Rachelle Frazer who was heading up the program and we ran with it.
The plan was to work with
Kent Youth & Family Services which provides professional counseling, education and support services to children, youth and their families by developing innovative programs in culturally sensitive ways. We worked with KY&FS Outreach Manager, Robert White, to identify 22 youth who needed bikes. We ordered the bikes, built them up, brought in locks from
Abus, helmets from
Kali and brought in a ton of pizza which all culminated in a great evening both for the kids and for the Diamondback Staff.
The notion that the gift you receive from giving to others far exceeds the gift given, is almost cliché these days. We are taught this from an early age and it’s reminded to us every holiday season. But the actual feeling taken away will never be cliché… you can never become tired of or used to it. It’s always special and exceptionally rewarding. And I am thrilled to work for a bike company and work within an industry with partners like Pinkbike, that share these values with me.
Happy Holidays!
