112 Photos From Fest Series - Biggest Jumps You'll Ever See

Retallack Lodge has always had the mentality of trying to think outside of the box. With our mission to pioneer a new segment in Mountain Biking, we have been looking for a unique opportunity to showcase our product to the industry of Freeride Mountain Biking. We felt this was a great way to let biking brands and action sports brands alike know that Retallack Lodge is fresh canvas for them to get there message out to the public. Whether it be a Fest Series stop, product launch, or team trip - Retallack is equipped to knock your vision out of the park. Our fully contained remote luxury lodge, coupled with a newly developed and ever growing mountain alpine trail network - the sky is the limit!

bigquotesWith one of the hottest summers in years in the Kooteneys, and a freshly built course up at Retallack Lodge; myself and the rest of the Fest crew made our way up to the little piece of heaven that lies in the Selkirk Mountains. We were greeted to a mountain bikers paradise, but we were also joined by mother nature. It rained for the week leading up to the event, and all week on and off during the event, transforming the dry, dusted-out trails from the hot summer into primo spring/fall conditions. Unfortunately leaving the freshly built jumps much too saturated to ride. Everyone lent a hand and worked hard all week to get the jumps ridable, but what we were reluctant to believe was that we just needed the sun! But at least we still had the trails... We rode tons, and I had some of the best laps of my life, and every time ending at Retallack's world class lodge to have a beer to celebrate, gourmet meal, and the rest of the mountain life to relax and enjoy, and do it all over again the next day. After five days of building, riding, and having the time of our lives at Retallack, we ended up waiting out two days in Nelson while the sun dried up our future. It turned out to be one of the funnest sessions I have ever had, especially after all the work that went into this whole event. It was a great ending to see everyone come together and persevere against the odds to make it happen. Even if we weren't able to ride the jumps it would have still been a week of amazing trails, people, first decents, and good times... but the jumps were the cherry on top! - Kurt Sorge

bigquotesRetallack liked the idea of the Fest Series from the get go. It resonated with our past experience of hosting the Red Bull Cold Rush - a rider judged competition. We believe this zero pressure judging format brings out the best in the athletes. We were not disappointed - the athletes were fired up and pulled off some of the most impressive athleticism we have seen on a big bike. They made 60ft long and 50ft high dirt jumps look like child's play. Our hats are off to event host Kurt Sorge and boys for bringing this event to Retallack Lodge and showing us a good time - Phil Pinfold, Owner/operator Retallack Lodge

I think the big defining factors in the success of Hoff Fest was the resilience of the crew in persistently frustrating weather conditions. Most events would have been called off out there though the crew jumped into action day after day combating the wet conditions whether it was from the sky or the underground springs. After a week of making the most of our beautiful surroundings when we weren t fighting rain calling it off for a few days was the best thing in the world for us. Getting to see Nelson and relaxing in the lake was a perfect mental reset for the event. It would have been ideal to get more time on the jumps but I think we all had an amazing time regardless. All of us are better for fighting the fight and getting what we came for. The Retallack crew was more than accommodating and adaptive as the situation progressed. Its really rare to find a group thats willing to support such a young idea they honestly saw and understood what it was we were gunning for out there.Jeff Herb Herbertson.

kudos to andreu and makken for taking initiative by making the 'real' freeriding seen and actually having fun . lets hope more companies start to look further than quickly earned money and get onboard with this sick series. I'm pretty sure people are more likely to get out and ride after watching riders in natural terrain rather than awkward backflips on open loops made of wood or plastic which riders prefer not to see.
  • 18 2
It'd be great to have more companies to support the FEST.
  • 9 1
They should launch a kickstarter or something for crowfunding. I would love to help to see more FEST series!
  • 13 5
Can we please stop comparing fmb slopestyle comps and the fest series? They are completely different disciplines!
  • 4 7
yeah but FMB doesn't focus on what the riders want, and is mostly about the companies. If there was any respect or regard for the riders at all, then why the hell were open loops and full loops put into ANY competition. Bike competitions, not a circus.
  • 10 1
The huck fesst has turned into a POD fest.
  • 14 0
You say that like you know what the riders want... so far I've only heard Andreu and a few of the fest boys complaining about fmb courses. Thing is, those guys are big mountain freeriders, not dirt jumpers (Andreu being the exception, though I haven't seen him compete recently). It's no small wonder they don't like typical fmb courses!

Fest series: big bikes on big jumps

Fmb: hardtails/slopestyle bikes (except for rampage)

As for the open loop- it's just one feature, don't get too hung up on it.
  • 1 1
rampage shouldn't be an fmb event, its two months a year these guys train for this event where only this year people that deserve it like jameson who ride big bikes more than that have been invited. and I do have an understanding as to what the fmb guys like and what they don't, had two days of practice with them at Bearclaw's so I heard a lot about courses and such. also twitter if you're on there you see LOADS of what they like and don't like since they all complain about course a bunch there. one feature that shows up and most contests this year..

Until this series came to life it felt like a long time where mountain biking was just stagnant. This is the first thing I have gotten excited for a long time. Someone actually figuring out how to push the limits. Thanks for giving us all these events. Gave me a reason to visit pb.

Just spent 6 months working in a roadie shop / workshop ; kingdom of lycra and shaved legs .

Thanks pinkbike for the amazing coverage of the Fest Series , that kept me alive and sane !
  • 2 1
I salute you sir, i would never be able to work in a shop with roadies and shaved legs without ripping some faces off.
  • 4 0
My buddy shaved his legs the other day. Needless to say we no longer ride together :p
  • 5 0
Shaved legs is just something we all laught about : " safe stuff " !

My 3 biggest issues :

- Roadies yelling at me while i'm holding a big pedal wrench ( as safe as pissing off someone holding an axe )
- Dudes making eye contact / talking to you and scraching their nuts .

And THE worse : getting on your knees , lock the footpump device to inflate a tire , look up a see about five dudes ; all circling you .
Basicaly facing penises .

There needs to be 'Article of the Year' award from PB. This would be a sure fire candidate to win it. Fest series has been a highlight of this year. Can't wait to see what they come up with next year... 40ft Open loop? JUST KIDDING

I admire the motocross guys tha jump high and fast, but compared to what we just saw in these pictures now I just feel sorry for them trying in their bikes with engines.

No words to describe everybody working hard to build (I counted 16) and after that stiil have the energy to fly like that is what make the rest of us keep riding.

Cheers

f*ck YES @margus About time someone produced some rad photos from the Fest Series.
  • 2 0
That 3rd jump is WAYYYY bigger than 35 feet. More like 55. According to the official tape, the first jump was 47', the middle one was 50' on the inside corner, and the third one was 55'. They were also in the air for longer on the third hit. Should also note that Alex Pro guinea'd the first jump on one of the build days, but he wasn't around for the actual session. I'm pretty sure it was Andreu that sent the line first on the Hoff day. Unbelievable to be present for this event. The pics are so sick, and they really don't do it justice. The jumps are so perfect, when you stand on them you think to yourself that you can easily do them. And then someone sends it and you can't believe how big they really are. Fucking kids and their video games....
