Announcing SORCA and Squamish’s Biggest Trail Project Ever

Apr 8, 2016
by SorcaMTB
Squamish Diamond Head Trail Project Build.

If you thought the biking in Squamish was awesome before, the new Diamond Head Trail project is going to take Squamish to the next level. Literally! SORCA is going up, up, all the way up and with Gravity Logic's build skills will be extending the existing Stl’lhalem Sintl’ (aka The Climbing Trail) by another 6km all the way to the top of the Diamond Head Trail System. That’s a whole lot of pedalling, but we guarantee you it will all be worth it ’cause what goes up, must come down!

And to get you down, Joyride Bike Parks is building a fast and flowy descent that’s guaranteed to put a big smile on your face! The terrain in the upper Diamond Head area is incredible with stands of old growth forests and killer views over Squamish and Howe Sound.

Both Trail builders have broken ground in what will be the most significant trail building project SORCA has ever undertaken. The project will complete SORCA’s long-term vision to connect the existing Stl’lhalem Sintl’ climbing trail to an undeveloped area in the upper Diamond Head area, where a new descent trail will be built, forming a single track loop over 20 kilometres long .

Squamish Diamond Head Trail Project Build.

The project will see over 9 kilometres of new trail added to the network, extending the climbing trail from its current terminus at the top of Angry Midget to the top of the Diamond Head parking lot and will link up to a brand new descent trail while opening up the area to future trail development. The new trail will also provide a continuous single-track experience from Quest University to Garibaldi Provincial Park and on to Red Heather hut and Elfin Lakes.

Elfin Lakes Squamish BC

SORCA has worked hard over the last last year to secure funding for the trail from our partners and sponsors including the District of Squamish, the Whistler Backcomb Foundation, OneUp Components, Rocky Mountain Bikes, NORCO, RockShox and many more. But to finish off the project, and to reach SORCA’s funding goal, we need your help!

Rocky Altitude

SORCA has hired the builders (both local Squamish trail builders and of Whistler Bike Park fame), plotted the route, and is ready for the fun to begin - and this is where you come in! SORCA needs cold hard cash in order to see this project come to fruition. So we’re asking you to reach into your pockets, break out the credit cards, grab your check books, look beneath your couch cushions and help us raise the bar in Squamish!

In order to build approximately 25,000 ft of trail it’s going to cost about $125,000. That’s a lot of nickels! So SORCA, with the help of project partners and sponsors, is going to sweeten the pot and give you a few added incentives to donate as much as you can. For every $5 you donate, you’ll be helping to build 1 foot of trail. And every foot of trail that you help to build will get you one entry into our amazing prize draw. Prizes include a carbon Rocky Mountain Altitude 750MSL, a carbon NORCO Range frameset, Rockshox Boxxer, Rockshox Pike, and even a Reverb!

Norco Range

So if you ride in Squamish or have ever dreamed of riding in Squamish, visit the fundraising page at sorca.ca/dhtp and donate today! The more you donate the more chances you have to win!

Give money, win prizes, ride new trails. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

For more information about the trails, the project, and to donate see SORCA's fundraising page at sorca.ca/dhtp.

This place is incredible for mountain biking. We try to go once a week from Vancouver. Climb trail to Angry Midget, than climb back up loging road to Fred, than Tinder, than Your Mom, and finish down Psedo Psuga. Take my money!

It's going to be sooooo rad to spend a few hours climbing up through forest, into subalpine meadows, along the most scenic ridge, for a quick swim in Elfin Lake before riding down to ride exactly the trails you mentioned. This is the best news.

We're stoked to be supporting SORCA and this latest trail building effort. The route leads almost to our office door so lunch rides are about to get even more serious.

@OneUpComponents: Huge thank you for your participation on this project and your support of SORCA. OneUp has set the standard for corporate support of local trails. We appreciate the tremendous amount OneUp gives back every year. We wouldn't where we are without OneUp's contribution - over 10% of the total raised for this project so far. Thank you!

Thank you Hot on Your Heels for getting us over the $100,000 mark! Great to see a local race giving back! Can't wait to see the women shred again this year - best race in the corridor!

What an amazing time to be a mountain biker on the west coast! Long live SORCA and Squamish!

Awesome! Angry Midgit to the Diamond Head parking lot will add an additional 1000 vertical feet. My only concern is that people will shuttle to the Diamond Head parking lot to now access the whole lower trail network and future trails.
Above the Midget is immediately into the Park Boundry so that begs the question, if SORCA has permission from BC Parks what are the odds of opening a discussion of trail building from Paul Ridge down? Now that would be forward thinking...an addition 2700 vertical feet from the Midget from the Sub Alpine.

I should have hit the link, clearly it avoids the park, too bad that's not in the cards but maybe in future with enough education and lobbying.

Not going to lie, supporting a project like this is pretty selfish of us... Can't wait!

@RockyMountainBicycles, We can't thank you enough for your support! The carbon Altitude is going to make one contributor very happy! Thank you for signing on early to this project and supporting the trails of Squamish!

No dream wizards help? But they've done so much for Squamish... Hopefully the other two do a good job.
  • 5 0
I don't think you have anything to worry about. Top tier diggers all round.

Thanks for the feedback ldh. Back in the fall an RFP was put out for the new construction to which we received many solid bids. In the end, upon much deliberation we chose two of the very best from the crop. I can assure you you'll be pleased with the results, and I'll see to it personally that they do a good job... or your money back Wink

@CruJonze: figured it was an rfp or some form of competitive bid, and Am sure the two will do a great job. Will come and test out the goods when it's done!

Yes build some nice wide flow trails for masses to flock to! Make them super flow and as wide as a road. Get them machines in rip up the earth. giddy up!

Yes, wide and smooth. It has to be road bike friendly for all the mamil's.

Wow, who needs a park pass when Squampton world is only 35 minutes away.
  • 8 1
There's amazing trails in Whistler that you don't need a lift pass to ride.

Does anyone know what the future of the Alice Lake trails will be, given that a huge chunk sit on private land which most likely will be developed? I like the Quest side but it would be a shame to lose Alice Lake trails.

This is an amazing idea. It's basically exactly the trail expansion I would have hoped for in the area. You will be getting my money, good sirs.

get thee to squeamish this season for sure. what bike is best for the terrain? 140 160 travel?
  • 2 1
Bring the biggest one you can pedal uphill.
  • 2 0
cyclocross if you're doing half nelson. 100mm on a 29'er makes angry midget a piece of cake. 140 is overkill unless you're doing some of the double blacks.
  • 1 0
Whatever your current / favourite bike will be fine. There are trails suitable for pretty much everything from a short travel hard tail to a 160mm enduro sled.
  • 2 0
 Do you accept child labour?
  • 2 0
Its too bad there are no bikes allowed past Elphin Lakes.
  • 2 0
 Cant wait!

 wooow that is awesome!! Smile
