I ride for nicks eyes has been a huge success!

by Nick Moore
Thank you all for what you have done for me, after the most insane month of my life the smoke has cleared, the surgery is over, and things have gone so much better than I could have ever hoped for...a modern day miracle has happened! Not only were they able to stop the disease in my right eye, they were able to turn my left eye back on. Because of all of you I get to have my life back, see my wife again, and once again go shred a trail. I am healing up just fine, everyday getting a little better and a little stronger with my sight. We truly love you all.

PS One of the side effects of having the three surgeries done is that I have to wear sunglasses like all the time now in any type of semi bright light because they just kill if you don't. So I'm not trying to look cool and be a rock star in the video.

What a ride. Audrey and I drove to L.A. for my eye consultation and surgery, when I walked into the office the first day I was scared out of my mind. We met with Dr. Boxer Wachler and even though this dude lives in down town Beverly Hills he is actually a total ski bum, he is a super humble dude who just wants to heal people. He describes Kerataconus like a hernia, the cornea literally bulges into cone shapes with peaks and valleys that distort the lens and drastically effects your vision. After loads of different tests and mapping of my eye he suggested a combination of three different procedures based on the current state of my eyes.

LEFT EYE: 1-Intacs-Cut into cornea and insert one C-shaped plastic piece to help prop and restore the shape of my eye. 2-CK-On the opposite side of the C-shaped plastic he burned the cornea in a C shape again (making a full circle) to control the warping that had already occurred. 3-CR-3-Prop your eyes open in front of an intense UV light then every 3 minutes baste your eye with riboflavin, cellulose, and vitamin B creating artificial connectors that replace the proteins that the disease attacks and break downs.

RIGHT EYE: 1-Only CR-3! My right eye just started degenerating so we caught it just in time. This procedure will halt the disease and my eyes will never progress and get worse.

The next morning I went back for the procedures. After the first two I sat up from the operating table and immediately tripped out, my eye was turned back on and I had peripheral vision again! There was so much information it was crazy. I went into another room for the CR-3 which was torturous, you are awake for everything! I saw needles and knifes all coming at my eye, and with the CR-3 I could see the material soak in and disperse to find the areas that needed to be filled, it was crazy. I slept a lot that day, the next morning Audrey drove me to my follow up appointment and I could read billboards and hotel signs, I could see detail in people's faces all in my left eye! I was shocked at the immediate results.

In the mornings it still feels like a 3 year old threw a handful of sand at my eyes, my left eye is still ultra fuzzy but my vision has improved more and more everyday and it will keep improving over the next 8 months and I'm beyond stoked. I go back in 3 months to get a custom fit hard contact lens that will help me see even more.

We are so overwhelmed by all your love and generosity, we made enough money to cover the whole surgery which relieved such a financial weight on me and Audrey. We felt your prayers as the surgery went perfect and have had such miraculous results.

Thank you for helping me see and enjoy life everyday. My eyes were saved by my family in dirt.

Great to see how we as friends and family in the biking community can save someone from such a close call, it really actually gives me a sense of security should this ever happen to myself, or anyone else. Everyone out there who supported is truly amazing, and i don't think nick can thank us all enough.. I must say, the biking scene is truly an amazing place to be!

This whole campaign has absolutely reaffirmed my faith in the biking community and people in general. It seems like alot of bad shit happens these days but this story is just heart warming. I'm glad to hear the surgery was a success and I'm proud to say I'm a part of this generous and caring community we like to call mountain bikers.
  • 9 0
total props to everyone that helped out and also nick! what can we say really? i dont think you would be getting that sort of support fro football fans Big Grin
  • 6 2
yeah but I'm pretty sure that nike or one of their sponsors would pay for it. Actually they probably wouldn't even need it since they get paid millions. But still, I agree that it's a great sense of community mtbers have

Its wonderful to hear such a great recovery. Last summer I ruptured my retina, did a hospital tour of Spain and got sent home to my local eye hospital. Not nearly as bad as yours, but I nearly lost the eye. I now have scarring right down the middle of my central vision on that eye, and the rest of the vision is blurred and distorted. It really helped when I was allowed to surf and ride my bike again! You don't appreciate what you've got til its gone, so its really fantastic that you're getting better!

 Hi!
I've had the same surgery 3 months ago for my keratoconus too and I am still waiting for my left eye to let me see normally again. I will have the same sugery on my right eye too in a few months.
It's good to see this video and know that this surgery works (because I started having doubts)...It gives me hope!
I cant wait being able to see the trails properly.

(P.S : I'm French, sorry for my bad english writing skills, and thanks for this video!)

Wow, just awesome to see how biking-community sticks together. That's what i like about biking, it seems you're part of a family. I have experienced this serveral times in crashing really hard and immediately being helped by surrounding dudes which i didnt even know. No compare to skiing or other sports. So Nick, hope you'll get well soon! Good to know you back on a bike soon... Greetings from Germany

I know how you feel in regards to the sunglasses all the time man. Due to a weird accident 15 years ago I have a permanently dilated pupil in one eye... I have also had a few different surgeries on that eye to maintain my sight. But what really rocks is that you can still ride... congrats on the successful surgeries!! p.s. you get used to the sunglasses, but it kinda sucks having really crazy tan lines from them
  • 2 0
i'm really happy to see that you getting better dude.. I'm so glad still beeing alive to see people like you fighting so hard and enjoying living.. such a touching video, brilliant, cheers for you mate... hope the best mate! keep connecting

Hell yeah man good to hear it was a success. A few years ago I got Uvyitys (not sure how to spell it) in my right eye and it felt like a hot poker stuck in my eye all the way to the back and gave me a SEVER migraine headache....I was scared about loosing my sight. Luckely mine was easy as taking some drops, I could now imagine, nor do I want to, what it would be like to actually lose my site. Congrats and protect those bad boys.

Awesome to hear your Keratoconus is being treated well, and that the community came together to help you out! I had the condition for years before it was diagnosed and properly treated with contact lenses, the Riboflavin treatment sounds really good, but it's only just started to be offered in the U.K. so I'll have to wait to get it. When you get your hard lenses, try out different lens solutions, I found that some of them made the photosensitivity much worse, meaning wearing sunglasses more and more, but with others the lenses are really comfortable and I can wear them all day. Make sure you protect your eyes when riding too, getting some dirt behind a hard contact lens on a sensitive cornea is a real bummer! And kids, Keratoconus is often caused in people with allergies that rub their eyes a lot, weakening the cornea. So if you see a friend going crazy on rubbing his eyes, tell him to stop and explain why! I wish I knew when I was a kid and this condition never developed!

"Keratoconus is often caused in people with allergies that rub their eyes a lot"
Thats actually a myth, but rubbing does help the progression get worse. Thats correct.
