Perspective Shift - Video

A photographic interview, studying shifting perspective in mountain bikers. Photographed and produced by Tristan Tinn for 'One More Brew'. Starring Sam & Nigel Pilling, Sam Sharp and Pat McGucken.

Given the One More Brew brief of ‘Perspective’, I strived to collate three sets of images, featuring three different riders of varying experience. The project puts the same five questions to all three riders, highlighting variation in their viewpoints.

As the event format favours video, I also aimed to blur the lines between video and photo, tieing photographs together with RAW audio.

'One More Brew' is a community of folk who breathe bikes, cameras, art and good brews. Although they’re sometimes only a short distance apart their scenes and riding can be completely different. One More Brew is an open source attempt to build the scene, giving a group of talented creatives an identical brief with a limited timescale to complete their final piece. Photographers, Filmers, Illustrators, Musicians, apply within… an eclectic bunch of people who have a love of bikes in common and the passion to get involved and share the love.

One More Brew is an attempt to reintroduce the fun, creative and joyful side of the creative process. Although I think we all love our jobs, the open-ended briefs intend to provide a welcome, refreshing stance to the usual approach to the bread and butter commercial work. Giving those involved something to strive for and get out on maybe some less than favourable days. After a quick brew, of course!

What do you fear most when riding your bike?
- Not being able to ride it again.
This sums it up perfectly for me.

amen. the more experience i have the bigger i go, but the less i try to go as fast as i can. i find i take the flow and speed that the trail naturally offers me more often since injuries take longer to heal. sending something new and bigger is always prefaced by the thought, "is this a 'next step' that I've prepared myself for so that the chances of success are high?" because eating it can mean time off the bike. cabin fever with no bike is no fun. riding is my sanity. I have much less of a problem now putting off the stoke of dropping something huge for me, in exchange for being whole, capable of riding tomorrow, and prepared for the day when I am ready to hit it. plus i'm always stoked after a ride regardless.  @ranke: well said. At some point we all get to a place where we begin the process of removing things from our ‘resumes’ to improve the long term sustainability of our ‘ride’.

Cool video and especially the fact that it has 3 generations of riders in there.

Hopefully my boys will keep riding and who knows, maybe, their children as wellWink

very well done......need more of this good shit like this and not debating about shit like wheel size, and electric shifting and the likes of. This article is mountain biking........not the marketing scenarios we are constantly get bombarded with!!!

That was very refreshing, nice work Tristan. Escape for sure. Sometimes the trail just isn't long enough.

 @tris400d:
Great work, awesome to see mtbing at grassroots level and their thoughts rather than the usual fare of top riders and what they have been up to, or the latest greatest bike/innovation/etc.

Big up the Cumbrian riding scene! Best place in the uk to ride a bike without a doubt!! Pat and Reilly put most riders to shame!
  • 1 0
Pat does indeed put many riders to shame. Riley is pretty quick on his feet too!

I just clicked on the video not reading about it, and when I saw only pictures I thought my computer was broken. HaHa great though.

Cool! So refreshing to see something so different.
But: 3 generations, men only...? Wink

Did you read the article? " Giving a group of talented creatives an identical brief with a limited timescale to complete their final piece." I'm guessing that they weren't able to find 3 generations of women who ride in the limited timescale. As awesome as I'm sure that would be.
  • 2 3
I'm with @cxfahrer. Call me a "man hater" if you like (but my name is Joey and it has been for a long time now), but I'm tired of men doing the riding. @Vudu74 If you say it's not feasible to find three generations of women, but that would be awesome, obviously providing more all male content doesn't help to create this "awesome" situation you speak of. I apologize for throwing shade at this video and your comment specifically, I see all male content every time I get on pinkbike and this is no different. I just don't see a need to shut down someone who notices all male content.

Otherwise a nice video. I never thought I'd enjoy a slide show so much.

@Coldspringer: I don't take at as shade. I just meant that maybe the constraints of the "limited timescale" of the project made it hard for the person who made this edit to get all the pieces in order. This is also the first of the "One More Brew" format. Maybe the next one will be made by women and be featured here as well. I am all for getting more female content and riders on any format that shows how awesome they are. But, the fact of the matter is that currently, mountain biking is still a male dominated sport. With that being said there has been a (negligible) swing in that pendulum. I have a 4 yr old daughter and I would be stoked for her to have strong female influences to look up to, be them on the bike, behind the camera making these types of edits, in ballet, or the boardroom. Whatever she chooses to do.

@Vudu74 @Coldspringer : Hey, just to say thanks for the positive feedback! Obviously the male/female thing did cross my mind, unfortunately I don't know any more 'experienced' ladies to shoot. That and the fact this was a bit of a study and mixing the sexes would have added a different variable and might have altered the combined effect of the responses. One the One More Brew night itself there was a solid mix of both sexes in the audience, creating content and riding bikes!

@Coldspringer: My friend Bex did a video for the one more brew project that used just a female rider and her dog.

Another question that could be asked is; Why aren't there more equally talented female videographers out there putting together edits showcasing female riders? I'm confident Pinkbike would find such content equally deserving of a place on the home page.
  • 1 1
@tris400d: @Vudu74 I appreciate your shared thoughts! I figure, growing the female riding community requires that we all think about what we do, consider the impact on our priorities (maybe by sharing some thoughts like we just did), and make growing the female riding community one of our priorities.

P.S.- really surprised my comment didn't sink "below threshold" yet. Thanks everyone! (comment about to be downvoted to oblivion)

Who is the Hitchcock sounding guy?
Signed, lazy, fat dentist....

It is Hitchcock, well done. Not sure I agree with this dentist bashing in the other comment, being a dental student myself!

Quite a blinkered perspective. Mountainbiking is a huge genre. I was expecting a little wider view.

Sorry Gary, I wanted to minimise variables other than experience, hence keeping it all one riding type. Also time limitations etc

But: 3 generations, men only...?

see his reply above, time and people. But he did say that on the night there was a good mixture of both sexes.

female riders - you might remember think it was last year one of the top female DH riders did a video where her and her mother went for a ride around a scottish lake - Hannah Barnes adventures with mum.
