When I was getting into the sport as an early teen I would often see John Wadell's name in all the big magazines.

As one of the pioneers in the sport, he has seen everything from racing Downhill on a bike with V-Brakes to racing 24-hour events on a bike 10 times safer. The story behind the transition from fast-paced risky downhill to 24-hour races is even crazier than the transition itself. In 2003 John had a huge crash resulting in massive brain trauma and John being in a coma for 26 days. We chat about his rehab and his unbelievable calm attitude towards the recovery.

As always huge shout out to NSDynamics for keeping the podcast going and keeping my bike's suspension running better than ever. Huck The World has also come on board as an official sponsor and now and is offering 10% off to all our listeners using the discount code beyondthetape10. Also FSR media for producing the best quality audio, this podcast would be nothing without him.

Kudos to Santa Cruz for supporting him years after they didn't have to.

 The true meaning of support!!!

I remember when he crashed. We all thought that if he came through , he would probably be a coach. Nobody ever thought that he would just go on to be a badass and do 24 hour races. Definitely one of the huge Inspirations to me.

Yeah, he definitely was one of the big names in freeride and it was a huge shock seeing him go out like that. To me it felt recovery took forever and then suddenly he was racing endurance events. Massive props to Santa Cruz Bicycles for sticking with him through all that.

I can't believe that after all that someone would take-up 24 hour racing!! what an animal

I was working a pit crew at the Canmore 24 hr World Champs a while back (~2008 ) and John Waddell was there. He came alone, self supported with hardly any gear other than what he had for riding the race. The weather was horrid but he kept churning all night. f*cking bad ass man.

I saw the crash in person, still haunts me to this day.

Dang. That is rough. I watched my wife break her back in 3 places riding. It still haunts me too. In some way, witnessing severe injuries can be just as bad as receiving them. Obviously different mental hurdles, but both are difficult to deal with.

@takeiteasyridehard: seeing my wife crash in whistler was definitely harder than anything I've experienced myself! She panicked going too fast into a berm and jumped off the bike. Face planted and broke the chin bar. Tore the skin off both forearms. No permanent injuries fortunately. It's terrifying to watch someone you love get hurt badly.

Good on him. I can say coming back from an injury like this is an incredible amount of work. I was in a coma for a month. For me I did not just come right out, it was more in and out for a while before finally pulling through. Tons of work to come back. Interesting to hear is speech pattern. I record myself to try and improve this, it is like my brain just shuts down for a second. I am in tech and in a lot of online meetings so I continually try and smooth out my speech pattern. Maybe it never happens. Very impressive guy.

Good to hear you came out of it!! The speech pattern and other simple things we take for granted seem like the longest to heal.

What a legend.. they could make a movie out of his story. Waddell would of worn the DH rainbow stripes if this accident didn't happen. Unreal rider and an unreal lad. Great to see him still shredding. Inspirational to say the least.

 I would watch that movie

Great podcast @beyond-the-tape.. Johnny mentioned Jared Rando.. another great lad. maybe a where are they now on some of those old school dh fellas? I heard Luke patching is still kicking around on the gold coast shredding and making bank fixing locks.

I have a long list of old school legends to go back in history with. They will be spaced out between up and comers, as well as current legends. Thanks for listening!!

Always wondered what happened to Waddell after Mont Ste-Anne crash. Glad he was wearing a moto helmet... Also glad to learn hes still rocking a nasty bike career.
