Race Day Photo Epic: Pietra Ligure Enduro World Cup 2023

Morgane Charre and Jesse Melamed stamped their authority on the trails of Pietra Ligure to triumph at the UCI Mountain Bike Enduro World Cup in Finale Outdoor Region. The pair took two stage wins apiece and were simply too consistently fast for their rivals on six fast, chunky and technical tracks above the azure waters of the Ligurian Sea in Italy.

After a huge 56km day, France’s Charre had a fairly comfortable win margin of nearly 14s over second-placed local hero Gloria Scarsi, with last year’s champion Isabeau Courdurier in third. Charre came out swinging and won the first two stages of the day - both around 10 minutes of riding and the longest in the race by some margin. As a result, she led all day despite a strong challenge from Scarsi, who took a later stage and was buoyed by a vocal and partisan local crowd to her best-ever result on the world stage.

In the men’s race it took Canadian Melamed a stage to get going but then he found his pace, took a stage win and held the lead for the rest of what was a massive day in the saddle with more than 2,000m of climbing and 3,100m of descending. Melamed’s biggest threat came from his countryman Rhys Verner who took the first stage of the day along with the fifth. That meant, at the close of play, he was only five seconds back after nearly 30 minutes against the clock. Frenchman Alex Rudeau won a stage and had two seconds places to finish less than a second behind Verner in third.

In the U21 race, it was a dominating win for Canadian Emmy Lan of the Forbidden Synthesis Team, France’s Lily Planquart was second and Lan’s compatriot Elly Hoskin was third. The U21 men was a win for Raphael Giambi, Scotland’s William Brodie was second and Giambi’s fellow Frenchman Alexis Icardo ended up third.

The team of the day were Canyon CLLCTV Factory Enduro Team but after three EDR rounds in 2023, Yeti/Fox Factory Racing lead the team standings.

 Missed:
- Deniaud also win a stage and had a huge crash loosing time.
- Començal Flat pedal Team, and Rudeau using Telemetry on trainning
- Jesse using the strive for first time on competition followed only by few sec by his team mate party boy with the Spectral. Both on Air.
- Look at that flexing shoe on Maes on that compression... wondering which is the right balance with sole stiffness and bending for performing well on EDR...
- Rude on Coil, Luvastik on Air
- Jesse´s fork seemed to dive so deep on the travel on the videos... Perhaps for better cornering and lower center gravity.

@PauRexs: 2nd too... Pretty sure that's a Druid v2 frame Rhys is on, he's pretty vocal about about being able to stay pinned on that thing.

@mdhorner: seems less travel is on point for tighter switchy trails. Lower gravity center, more cornering grip/speed and more agile

@TreyChristensen: Thx. I realize this while I had to work doing other stuff during the weekend... So I can´t believe it´s me who has to do this when there is paid professionals, on an off the site, suposedly to do it... I´m just a retired early enduro racer...

Errors aren't the new truth ;-) Jeandel was on clip (it's Rudeau on that shoot) and Maes flexing shoes looks more optical illusion than real flex !

I would assume the value of the contract that remains. It's not uncommon in sport for a sponsor to pay what was agreed upon and discontinue additional support (like bikes, race support, travel and accommodation, etc) as it's very expensive to pay these costs. So they cut their loses... BUT... Now we wonder why and the full story from both sides point of view.

Thank you Dave for the great content, and spectacular photos!!!! Super shock that Noga got released, she is such a consistent rider, I hope she get pick up by a team, and gets technical support etc this season. Total bummer to get cut during the season, IMHO GT should had done that before the beginning of the season, giving her a fair chance to pick up a team. Will love to heard both sides of the story, Good luck Noga!!

What do you have to do to get paid out by your team and cut…? Is there a precedent for that?
  • 10 10
 Be the wrong nationality.
  • 2 0
@americandentalassociation: possible. I was thinking more, did she dislike the bike? Did her team not get along with her? Whatever it was, has to get pretty bad to move on.
  • 6 0
The whole situation seems weird as she rode for them for over 5 years. So they knew her, her nationality etc. and she new the staff, the people amd the bike.

But it for sure does not seem that she got a fair chance to find another team as they offered a new contract…

Goo luck Noga!

@bikefan88: economics man, she was prolly their highest paid enduro racer and the bike industry is bleeding cash, something’s gotta go. I’d prefer it was the YouTuber influencer crew that gets the boot but she’s just a line on a bean counter’s spreadsheet so get out the red sharpie.

Noga is gone from their website, but it still shows that Chris Akrigg, Kate Lawrence, and Joey Foresta ride for them. Give me a break. Maybe Noga can get a ride with Fezzari…
