Ride of the Dead - Video

Dec 14, 2017
by Red Bull Bike

Ride of the Dead takes us into the world of the Mexican mountain bike culture during the famous annual celebration known as Dia De Los Muertos. This film follows Oaxacan born and raised rider and trail builder, Yefra Ram through some of Mexico’s best mountain bike trails as he honors the passing of loved ones during the first annual Transierra Norte 3 day enduro race.

Yefra Ram builds and maintains the trails nestled within Oaxaca’s backcountry and works with the local villages and the Transierra Norte administration to develop a network of world-class trails once used as donkey trodden trade routes. This is one man’s journey to share his love of riding with the world.

bigquotesOur goal with this film was to create something atypical within the mountain bike space. This is not a mountain bike film. This is a moment in time captured through the lens of Yefra Ram. This piece is meant to connect our audience to a culture and experience outside their own through the common thread of mountain biking. We hope Ride of the Dead will create cross-cultural awareness and unify riders and outdoor enthusiasts all over the world through shared passions.

This shoot was a true test of improvisation and on the move decision making. We found our character, Yefra Ram on day two of the shoot while navigating in a non-English speaking country, through remote mountain villages during the largest celebration in the region. Our team's ability to ebb and flow with the punches and operate on very little sleep made for an amazing experience.

bigquotesBetween hiking 3kilometers up a steep mtb/donkey trail in the middle of the Sierra in the pitch black alone carrying a Red Camera setup, drone and gimbal thinking I was being followed by a panther, and witnessing the craziest Day of the Dead celebration/party of my life...and so much more... I would say this was one of the most memorable shoots I’ve had thus far in my career as a filmmaker. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with a great team to make this piece come alive. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did making it.Director, Michael Parenteau

Video of the Year. Honestly. Stunning cinematography, incredible story, fantastic narrating, and sweet riding. Best thing I've watched in a long time!

Is there a version narrated by him in Spanish? I'd love to see that as well!

Agreed, absolutely amazing, fun, emotional, beautiful.

I love trying to explain the feeling of riding bikes.... couldn't have said it better myself. "And I don't know what is happening when I am riding down the trails".

Gorgeous film rich with real people, culture and riding! Love it!

I loved this video! I've been interested in going to Oaxaca for some time, and my finances weren't right to register for this event this year. Next year though, I'm hoping to be there. What an incredible celebration!

What are you waiting for!!! Registrations are open, you wont regret this adventure! Cheers!

Maybe I'll get neg's for this. I loved the video, looks like an amazing event and everything. But 1000usd is a expensive entrance fee for us mexicans. Obviously this event is meant for foreign riders (website in english, etc). Is there any chance of a similar race for the "local" guys?
  • 3 0
 Um... That's expensive for anyone!
  • 8 0
Although it is expensive for anyone and beyond my means as well, I think that reduced fees for locals at MTB races is an excellent idea! Mountain Biking is a great sport but supporting local riders is as important as bringing some tourist money to their communities.

That's good feedback to the race organizers, not negative at all!

This was my Advent Calendar winnings! Tradition, remembrance, passion and above all humility. Thanks for taking me on that awe inspiring adventure.

What a rare treat to see such a quality production of a beautiful story. Mad respect for Yefra ! He is in the vanguard of a group of riders in Mexico that are quietly developing the most amazing trials all throughout Mexico. The potential for developing world class singletrack in Mexico is totally off the hook and a little community support from the larger rider community would go a long way there. The added bonus is the amazing new friends you'll make if you go to Mexico to ride. I spent five consecutive years putting up new routes and climbing in Potrero Chico near Monterrey and I was fortunate to partner up with many Mexican climbers. I was amazed at how truly badass the Mexiican climbers were and how much fun they were to spend time with. The bikers there are no different - their whip is whatever they can afford and get their hands on and they they totally pin it every ride. If you're looking for buffed-out single track, go elsewhere. If you can flow on the rough and wild, you'll be in heaven. I'm going to do this race. I might be the slowest ass, geriatric gringo to ever limp to the finish, but it would be worth every minute.

I went near Oaxaca to meet my parents in law for the first time. Its literally paradise. The forest/jungles have a gazillion trails. There was swimming and fishing spots everywhere. At the beach there are fish everywhere. You can run your fingers through the sand and scoop up clams for a clam soup that night.

Cool vid, but as a former bike mech, that wheel "truing" scene was painful to watch lol

That probably was at the bike shop in Oaxaca...

Yeah, that would be what they call a "Mexicanada" here. Getting the job done with what you've got, like MacGyver but without the duct tape. That said, mechanics here do know how to properly true a wheel, and a good mechanic in a remote town or village will utterly dazzle any mechanic from the first world with what can be done without the right tools and replacement parts...

Wheel's already fucked... hit it with a rock and let's go ride.

Really and truly one of the best edits I’ve ever seen. Does justice to the culture, our Mtb culture, and pays homage to the land and the trails we rode on. This short documentary is the closest thing I’ve ever seen that explains the spirituality of mountain biking.

Short answer is: Because It’s harder to commodify things on a massive scale when you leave cultural locality, and diversity intact. That’s why sadly.
