Video: Emil Johansson Perfects Tricks Inside the Heby Skatepark in 'Empty Spaces'

During winter, Heby Skatepark is a regular ride spot for Emil. He has been riding there since 2015 and already filmed there for "XXII.XI".

We've had a chat with Emil about tricks being ready to show to the public via video as well as the difference between filming and contest:

At what stage he considers a trick “ready to film”:

Emil Johansson: There is not really a stage where I say this trick is done or perfected to a 100% but there is a time when I can be pleased with how it looks that I feel like it is ready to be filmed. During a process of filming, I am sometimes trying out tricks that does not make the end cut just cause I am not pleased enough with how it looks yet… tricks are difficult to perfect and they never really get easier, you just get better at them.

On whether he goes through a similar process to building a video part as working out a contest run:

Emil Johansson: They have common areas but putting together a video can be more relaxing in the way that you can build it and put it together however you want, while on a contest course you need to get everything done in a row on a set time on a set course that someone else built, even if it might be super windy… all those things come in to play when putting together a contest run. While in filming you can really try a trick however many times you want.

Excellent edit. Likely one of the best I’ve ever seen. Conveyed a lot of feeling and atmosphere with zero fluff. And of course top notch riding. Curious to see if anyone can muster up any legit criticism. Well done guys.

We’re wasting our words on comments for this video. Greatness I cannot convey.

Anyone else feel really relaxed after watching this? Just so so smooth

His skill level and style are Semenuk-esk.

 The Rally driver?

 @loamyhomie: No, the football player

@F1air: football as in soccer or football as in football?

Slopestyle yes, but you can see he rides big bikes not as often (yet!).

With Skatepark riding Max Fredrikson is awfully close, but he aint nowhere near with the big jumps. Indeed Max is perhaps (debatable!) the most allround "do it on any MTB" tricks rider right now, though that is due to choices (Emil is the better rider, but extremely focussed on Slopestyle).

Wondering how Fedko is going to develop and how close Lemoine will come slopestyle wise.

What's that trick at 1.51? Beautiful.

came here to ask that. i don't even understand what's happening there

 double decade
  • 6 0
 @nvidia: 20 years basically
  • 1 0
Decade with a whip? He only does one revolution relative to the ground but two relative to the bike.
  • 5 0
It’s a double downside whip, not a decade
  • 1 0
 Really hard...
  • 1 0
@Jden11: That's what I thought, I called it a double decade before I realized it was a double downside whip. I'm so used to seeing those out of quarters on bmx bikes I barely recognized it. Emil makes it look so sick!

This is filmed at Robbans BMX & Skatehall in Heby. They post some cool videos on FB and Instagram of young rippers. A great place but far too ganrly for me!!! :-)

Cant see how any of the other crankworx riders are going to get to his level, undoubtly the best slopestyle rider right now and in the future probably too.

A shame that we have only this kind of videos from him (kind of copying Semenuk's). It's strange how it's the exact opposite of Thomas Lemoine. I guess his "image" is locked by some juicy contracts... We need this kid to do things less calculated !

I enjoyed the video, no hate here

What magic is making him able to fakie without having to back pedal?

I see a chain on there, is it some sort of special hub?
  • 5 0
Freecoaster, bmx hub but a few companies make mtb ones now too
  • 6 0
Actually you could build one out of an old coaster brake hub by replacing some parts with an "unbrake". Ofcouse nowdays nowbody brothers with these mods because superior hubs are available from factory. Just saying the tech is old and everywhere but in other application.

@feeblesmith: upvote for the history lesson and username.

Back in the day, people would replace the smallest cog or two, with a smooth spacer. You would shift the chain onto the spacer and this would allow you to coast backwards without backpedaling.

He made it all look so sad and lonely. If I was that good at bmx tricks I’d hope to not live in black and white and without friends.

 it's lonely at the top

 Amazing. Such precision and power!

Every Nac I see now has me comparing them to Dillon Butchers! Glad this Emil kid has some other tricks to fall back on.
