Madison Saracen DH bike

Matt Simmonds' Prototype Headset

We already showed you Sam Dale's Saracen Myst and his second generation prototype Shimano pedals, but there's yet more goodies to be seen on another Saracen, although not nearly as obvious as a set of pedals. Tucked into Matt Simmonds' bike's head tube is a special offset headset, which in itself isn't a new idea - we've seen Chris King's version for a few years now - but the headset in Sam's bike is a bit different. First, there are a few different offsets that provide either five or eight millimeters of additional length or the ability to shorten the bike's reach, all while also allowing for head angle adjustments.

Word is that Manon has gone with five millimeters of offset and a one degree slacker head angle, while the other Saracen riders have opted for eight millimeters and no change to the bike's head angle. Oddly, Matt has used his to actually shorten his Myst's top tube length, which is the opposite of what we usually see. No word on if Matt, Sam and Manon will be running these settings on race day, but they're tinkering with different setup options to see what works best for them.

The headset allows for both reach and angle adjustment, and it is keyed with the head tube to ensure proper alignment.

Matt is running his headset so that it creates a shorter reach, which is the opposite of what we usually see racers doing.

What really sets this headset apart is how it mates with the Myst's head tube - it's a keyed interface to ensure that both cups are aligned exactly as they should be. That means that there's no measuring or eyeballing, but also that the offset cups will only ever fit these Saracan Mysts. Because Saracen, or maybe a partner of theirs, is taking the time to machine the cups, and the frames are being manufactured to match, it means that we'll likely see something similar to this hit production in the near future.

Patrol DH bike

The Patrol 871

Patrol is an Indonesian brand that's signed four riders - Andre Palmer, Popo Ario Sejati, Fitriyanti Cibenk and Toni Yuli Lopez - for their World Cup effort in 2015. The aluminum bike does appear to be relatively conventional, as does its geometry, especially compared to some of the carbon fiber dream machines being raced these days, but we'll reserve judgement until we get a chance to throw a leg over the 871.

The bar ends bother me a surprising amount

It's the simplicity that makes it beautiful. It's like by not trying too hard they have achieved where others try too hard and seem to fail.

The head tube is short so the distance between the triples makes the stanchions look really long by comparison.

i guess is just the colour Razz

They got the paint job from the Royal Racing catalogue

" Something about that Patrol just looks perfect."

Are you talking about the simplicity of the design?

Patrol has that gravity/freeride look to it more than DH but it looks amazing!
  • 2 1
All jokes aside guys... It definitely does not look like a session! Haha

I still have the stickers on mine, held up 7 years now Big Grin

Looks a hell of a lot like the Kona precept 200 haha

Patrol got me on board to film their promotional videos in Canberra, Australia.
I didn't ride the DH bike, but their shorter travel Enduro and XC bikes are well specced, nimble and stable. I feel as though the 27.5" wheels are a perfect platform for them.

@Ben4575 I didn't notice that at first, but I did see the warning stickers still on the rotors and "Maxxis" misaligned to the valve stem on the rear tire. It's the little things.

Do you think the guys back at orange are thinking " maybe we should hire the indonisian guy who designed this as our bike is a pig"
  • 3 2
lol, just because the brand is based there, doesn't mean the designer is.
  • 1 0
Was going to leave a similar comment, it's how oranges should look. Boxy rear and hydro front.

Shorter reach for Sam? It's not cool unless riding your bike is comparable to driving a limo from the backseat...
  • 2 0
I'm curious if he is actually going for a shorter reach, or if he wants a more slack headtube angle?
  • 3 1
In order to get that sort of headset spread to the mases why not make an insert for the headtube that still has the key slots, rather than specially machined head tubes. That way the insert could engage with an, albeit slightly smaller, O/D of the headset cups.
  • 7 2
... but what would ensure that this insert was aligned correctly? Yes, the cups would always be in unison, but the insert itself could be rotated slightly off of center.
  • 2 1
@mikelevy fair point. I just meant the eyeball alignment would only have to happen once - for the inserts. Then the various keys would be available to adjust cup position.
  • 2 0
You would just need a jig that squared the head tube to the seat tube when pressing the keyed collar in. Not impossible or out of the question by any means
  • 1 0
Sure would be convenient and neat-o to just drop in adjustments like that and just know it's straight too. I'd pay a little extra to have that feature machined into a new frame. Total selling point
  • 3 0
Works already offer offset headsets, maybe not keyed to the frame but i have used a headset in the past and it isnt that hard to align properly.

I am sure a rider on ridemonkey got works to make a 1.0 degree version too.

The notches on a summon make it very simple to use the geo kit, with correct alignment. I'm surprised it's not become more mainstream
  • 2 0
Anyone know of anyone other than works components that make offset heasets ? My Pulse is in need of one
  • 1 0
Chris King, but they said they are "only for sponsored racers" and would probably cost about $250 too...

Your from the UK so easy to get Works stuff, no?
  • 1 0
Works have been out of stock with them for a while unfortunately
  • 1 0
Try DaPilten. He can make you everything you need fully custom.
  • 5 2
I'm probably going to start a shitstorm with this... But, I wonder if heartubes should / could be getting bigger in diameter a bit. To allow for even more offset!
  • 2 0
Mondraker use a big headtube top and bottom and their own angle cups and the devinci spartans headtube i saw out riding last week looked massive

Patrol known as United Bike before, but now they are using Patrol for the international product.
  • 5 8
I wonder if the Patrol name is a play on the Nissan Patrol 4x4 vehicle?...used to have a little '64 model. No one here has ever heard of them...Nissans version of the old Toyota FJ40 basically
  • 8 1
Yeah that's probably it, because "patrol" doesn't have any other definitions
  • 5 5
Such negativity in the world. It was just a thought...can't see the forest thru all the idiots these days.
  • 3 0
loopie...as a car guy I have always thought it would be cool to have one of those next to an old datsun 510 of the same color in my garage. And yes...the forest is very hard to see haha.

Is it the picture or the new Kashima ( Saracen probably has a proto version) is much more "gold" looking than the older ?
  • 1 0
 2016 40s on the Saracen
  • 1 0
Fox says that kashima coat can vary in colour from batch to batch, you can even get forks with slightly different shade on each leg Smile
  • 3 0
That Patrol looks the same as a Rose frame.
  • 1 0
Looks like the new Kona proto bike. The Rose BeefCake is straighter than Charlie Sheen and was a very weird and twisty frame Big Grin
  • 1 0
This new prototype does what comencals used to do. I do liked the concept, but why make a new one and not just use an angle set it license comencals design?
  • 3 1
Wow united patrol in dh world cup coolll
  • 3 0
 This Patrol is Intense!

more goodies under the blue gloves on sams bike????
  • 1 0
Doubtful. Saint calipers, and the gloves are over them because the bike was being sprayed down.
  • 2 0
nah, the mechanic covered the brakes and removed the wheels to coat the bike with silicone spray. He's wiping it down in the pic.
  • 1 0
I think that is to catch any brake fluid or to prevent contamination of the brake pads - although could also be some kind of prototype under there too
  • 2 0
I go as far as removing my brake pads when cleaning the bike , fed up with contaminated pads
  • 1 0
This bike don't look like a trek session

PAINT is gorgeous. At last some decent graphics! was needed ages ago.

 Patrol 871=Transition Blindside

Same same...but diiiifferent

What this stemp ? Pic. 2

The Patrol is pretty nice, but the paintjob makes it look kinda like a kids bike.
