spankthewan you can't really talk, your comma and period should have gone inside the quotation marks. Doesn't really bother me, but as long as we're splitting hairs...
What every one has failed to notice is that spankthewan has used double quotation marks out of context. He should have used single quotation marks. Double quotation marks are used for a quote within a quote or speech marks, e.g. 'so I said to him "your f*ckin mental mate" and walked out'.
Seraph, you are wrong about the comma and period (full stop) placement. Spankthewan was correct, a comma or period denote a break or a stop in the sentence and thus come after all other punctuation marks.
Spankthewan, you are wrong about richierocket using a comma after 'grammar' and before 'people'. It's not proper English to end a sentence with a single word after a comma.
If a quotation is started in single quotation marks, then the dialogue or second quote within the quote will be in double quotation marks. However neither single nor double quotation marks is necessarily correct nor incorrect. They are both acceptable, so long as you don't use single quotation marks inside of a sentence or quote that has been started in single quotation marks, and vice versa.
I believe you are also incorrect about the placement of commas and/or periods inside of quotation marks at the end of sentences or quotes. I hate to quote Wikipedia, but I believe this article says what I want to say with far better prose: "Before the advent of mechanical type, the order of quotation marks with full stops and commas was not given much consideration. The printing press required that the easily damaged smallest pieces of type for the comma and full stop be protected behind the more robust quotation marks.[6] Typesetters' style still adheres to this older tradition in formal writing. It is always taught to American schoolchildren when they learn how to draft prose, and is strictly observed in most books, newspapers, magazines, and journals."
I would never depend on wikipedia for an accurate definition of anything. Although that article does explain why type is laid out in a certain way, it doesn't mean it is the correct use of punctuation. Lets put this difference of fact down to different cultural learning's then. In England we are taught to put the quotation marks inside the period, in the US you're taught to put them on the outside. There are also a multitude of permutations regarding whether you are quoting a quote, quoting a question, or whether a number/single letter in quote marks is the last to be typed in a sentence.
To be fair you cant just spam prop a ton of people negatively and not expect retaliation ( I havent) but I do not find it alarming you are under threshold.
