this photo shows how small and insignificant we really are... and how awesome the world around us really is.

Right?........It amazes me how important we think we are, when in the grand scheme we're probably the worst thing to happen to the planet. One day it will have it's revenge........

If we're so insignificant in the grand scheme of things how did we ever become powerful enough to effect (for good or bad) billions of years of natural evolution? Seems kind of a contradictory IMO

and it seems as if many people such as myself disagree with your opinion and believe that evolution is a fluke and a made up theory. I am christian, that is my opinion and I am trying to remain neutral in this. Nice picture and as what kantoozi said, this does really go to show the world isn't really small after all.

Love the philosophical and metaphysical bent of this first thread--from the ominous eschatological tones of impending doom (props to draggon) to the spiritual tones of xxslopestylerider (good morning my friend); Amazing what a picture can do...And I think it does that b/c we've all felt "how awesome the world around us really is" on our rides. Shredding, shredding, shredding, then suddenly catching a view of the grandeur of the surroundings of our shred-grounds....Rode Moab this weekend and definitely saw some breath-taking panoramas. Whether or not you believe in a Creator, it does stir something within us, doesn't it...

...That's a starting point, at least

@ Marlfox87...we dont effect evolution at all
  • 7 0
 ...what? of course we do?

Yayyyyyy, another awesome and unrelated discussion in a photo comment thread. Keep it in your pants boys
  • 6 9
I don't reckon that discussion like this^^^^^^ is ever off-topic, in fact it's kinda cool to see. I'm not trying to rekindle this discussion, but I'm a Christian as well and @xxslopestylerider9x props for having the guts to say that!
  • 5 2
I wasn't discussing evolution vs creation at all... I was just trying to point out how the first comment states how "insignificant" we are, and then the next guy agrees and says that we're "the worst thing to happen to the planet"... and I was just wondering how if we really are so insignificant, that we could disrupt a natural cycle that's billions of years old... either we're pretty damn significant if we can influence an entire planet's global ecosystem... or we're really insignificant but highly egotistical in our own abilities to affect the planet. That's the contradiction I was trying to point out.
  • 5 2
Sorry for the wrong use of the word Evolution though... forgot that that can be such a loaded word at times. It was meant in reference to how the planet itself has evolved(Triassic, Jurrasic, Cretaceous, Ice Age, etc...). This is also what I'm meaning by the term "natural cycle that's billions of years old."
  • 3 0
alright, all good. Still pretty neat for Pinkbike comments, most of the time a POD doesn't trigger this kind of thinking and discussion.
  • 3 0
I don't happen to agree with you, but this probably isn't the best place for an extended discussion.
  • 4 2
that's perfectly fine.. if you're ever interested in discussing it in a proper setting feel free to PM me.. if not.. keep riding hard and God speed (Given how Gwin tends to ride, and his open beliefs this there may be some literal truth there.. but again..another topic for another day)
  • 3 3
@marlfox87 if you think you are not insignificant and you are more bigger than the nature that created you , go live on the moon !!!
  • 5 1
I'll stay right here thank you.. I'm not saying humanity is either insignificant nor all-powerful.. i just don't see how mankind can be seen as both insignificant, and yet be seen as the "worst thing to happen to the planet".... that's like saying a virus is insignificant because it's small, but at the same time the fact that it can harm you, make you sick, or even kill you, makes it pretty significant... I'm just trying to figure out what these people are trying to say.
  • 2 1
I think the virus is actually a good example here..... Without knowing we kill thousands of viruses every minute, but again in huge numbers in the body can kill us, and I see the exact same thing happening to the world. Sure we're tiny compered to the world (and in my honest opinion, sh*t and tiny) but we can still pack a punch. I think that humans often need to step back and look at the world, because it's much bigger and greater than us. Whether you believe in God or not (I'm atheist) We're pretty sh*t compared to this view......
  • 1 2
I can see what you're saying iesubach.. disagree on some points, but the point I've been trying to make is that the fact that we can be pack a punch makes us significant (whether we use that punch for beneficial or destructive reasons is a whole another debate). I think maybe we've mixed the terms small and insignificant to mean the same thing.
  • 3 4
what the hells up with this wack debate? its a sick photo. enough said
  • 4 5
evolution been proven u idiot. it may be tolerated these days to lay your trust in 2000 year old stories rather than science, but dont say its made up
  • 4 7
Evolution has NOT been proven, there are many huge holes in the THEORY of evolution. If man evolved from apes, then why are there still apes? Not to mention MANY others. Look around you, scroll up and look again at this photo. Then try telling me honestly that you still don't believe an awesome Creator put that mountain there.

Andrew Grant: "If man evolved from apes, then why are there still apes?"

How about this: If full-suspension evolved from hardtails, then why are there still hardtails?

Answer to both: Because in certain environments they are better adapted.

Please note that my answer neither proves or disproves Creativity, Evolution, Grand Design, Aliens, etc. I think where we are going is far more important than from where we have come. Especially if you are driving home from Vegas.
  • 4 0
@andrewgrant evolution is a fact and a theory. Just like he heliocentric theory of the solar system. Our knowledge of evolution is what helps us fight flue viruses when the bacteria mutate. But to keep this constructive and on topic, sick picture love the background. Way to keep it fresh.
  • 2 5
Nice metaphor, but think about this- full suspension is completely different from hardtail, and has been right from the start. Man is different from any other kind of primate, and has been right from the start. One thing simply cannot turn into another!
  • 2 4
@grievo- evolution is anything but fact, there's more holes in it than a spaghetti strainer.
  • 5 0
and yet creationism has no facts.

I can't believe another POD has taken users to talking about something COMPLETELY different from the picture.

FACT: God sent the worldwide flood. Countless fossils and sediment layers prove this.
FACT: God created the earth and everything in it in 7 days. Look around, take a walk in nature. The attention to detail is incredible and could not possibly be a result of random chance. There is too much diversity.
FACT: God created you and everyone else, and loves you like a son.
FACT: This is an awesome photo!

okay i hate to get into this and before i start, I'm Christian so dont think I'm just bashing God. @andrewgrant your facts are true in my mind (not the second, i believe in not taking the bible literally) but there are lots of people on here who would have a pretty easy time discounting your arguments with scientific facts like the big bang and whatnot...and also there isn't any scientific proof that God did all this...what im saying is that yes, you have the right to free speech and your arguments which are mostly correct, but you should think before you get involved in something like this because from what ive seen no one likes an off topic argument (yes i know im being hypocritical with getting involved)
ANYWAY
LETS JUST ALL ENJOY THE PICTURE
  • 3 1
 Holy crapola people!

I have been reading this all day not wanting to get involved but now I want to clarify what I meant with my comment. When I said "It amazes me how important we think we are, when in the grand scheme we're probably the worst thing to happen to the planet" I was referring to my opinion only of the ever growing egotism of the human race that is perpetually fed by the "advancements" that we continue to strive for at all costs and the knowledge that we are at the top of the food chain to the point of failing to realize what beauty and wonders we are surrounded by great and small and are gradually destroying with our actions all the while believing we can "fix" everything. It is ironic to me that we are the only animal that needs to set laws and regulations so hopefully we don't totally destroy the very things we need for survival. When I said "One day it will have it's revenge" I meant that no matter what we do, the planet will go on and I believe there is a high probability that it will outlast us and will rebuild itself. Mother nature always finds a way and will get the last laugh.

Just for the record, I had no religious or evolutionary thoughts in my head when I wrote the comment, I do know better than to talk about religion or politics with people and I believe everyone has a right to believe what they want.....what harm is it as long as they don't push their beliefs on others. I want to apologize to kantoozi who's comment was what I believe to be a positive one and then I took it to a more negative nature with mine. I always try to provide a hopefully humerus comment but I was kinda having a bad day yesterday and this pic doesn't easily lend itself to humor so that is what came out....maybe I should not have made a comment other than sweet pic, me jelly.....but alas, hindsight is 20/20. What can I say, I am just a man and I do make a lot of mistakes......at least that's what my wife tells me.

This has been interesting to observe though and remember people "Keep it civil! Be constructive and on-topic" and so will I (hopefully)...........I'm out.
  • 3 2
Y'allz have a good point, I for one got carried away a little bit. Not forcing my beliefs on others, just trying to make people think about things they maybe haven't before. A photo comment thread may not have been the place for all this however this is definitely an inspiring shot!
  • 4 0
Wow, I really sparked a whole conversation didn't I, sorry if I blew this out of proportion here, I didn't think it was going to get this big and deep!

haha, alright that was like the best one I've heard in a while!
  • 2 1
@andrewgiant ever heard of different types of dogs? or cats? or people for that matter? have white people been white from the start?no they havent, we all evolved from a common ancestor. we do not come from the same family of "monkeys" (they have more scientific names and have been classified) as common monkeys do, but we were very similar. go to school
  • 2 4
Adaptation is not the same as evolution. Humans and animals adapt over time to their surroundings. However, they don't turn into something else. Humans all have the same general characteristics which have distinct differences from primates.

you guys are seriously annoying the hell out of me.
  • 3 0
@adrewgrant well if we were talking about earth being created only 6000 years ago then i guess u may be right.. but that would be downright ridiculous! ahaha tell me this since you take the bible so literally: if we come from adam and eve, who had two sons, did they have sex with their mom?? you say there are holes in the theory of evolution, when the theory of creation is way more far fetched, and you are also claiming to know the meaning to the universe, to life. if scientists dont know aboslutely everything yet, they are at least closer than religion, that hasnt made any progress in what, 2000 years since the bible was written?

Tough draw in the first round, this image deserved to go further. Kind of a shame it was put up against another image that was equally as impressive. I was pretty torn when it came to voting. Brilliant shot!!!
  • 3 0
the picture of the year format is actually awful. It allows for an extreme degree of bias which is evident by how many like images were placed against each other. That means the second most popular picture, could actually walk away with nothing because it wasn't as good as the most popular picture. This is why most play-off formatted anythings have a seeding procedure... I'd be curious to know how the match ups were picked for this contest, if it was by volume of nominations, or if the match ups were hand picked to ensure diversity of the final 4.
