Video: Just a Top Qualifier? Luca Shaw is In It to Win It

by WD-40BIKE

After qualifying first at three UCI World Cup Downhill races in 2018, it won't be a surprise when Luca Shaw stands atop the podium in 2019. Historically, top American riders have migrated west — to states like Colorado and California in order to prepare themselves for the world's toughest terrain — but Shaw, a proud born-and-raised East Coaster, is leading a trend of American riders into the density of North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest.

Check out Shaw's biography in the video above to learn more about how the United States' right coast has helped him rise from obscurity to maturity for the world's most elite level of competition...

You have the right frame of mind, I will be rooting for you. See you in Snowshoe.

@skinnyjeans , not sure whey some clown downvoted you. Positive racer, you posted a positive comment. Some people just have sad lives I suppose.
  • 7 9
@bman33: because if one doesn’t agree with you they must be wrong, right?
  • 7 1
@bman33: sad lives or fat fingers, one of the two.
  • 5 0
@CaliCol: If folks were debating wheels, brakes, etc maybe. But, this is a positive interview with a guy who doesn't talk trash. In addition, skinnyjeans' post was of encouragement. If someone doesn't "agree" with that ..they have a right to their opinion but seems like a miserable outlook

@bman33: propping system is usually used by sad fat fingers... there's no point to care.
  • 2 3
@bman33: my comment really had nothing to do with Luca Shaw but about the travesty of justice some of you feel about downvotes. It’s a down vote from probably a teenager that just grew pubes, don’t know why y’all care so much that one does not agree with you, especially some of the commenters here.

@bman33: It is nice to see that some people still get it. And some don`t.
  • 2 3
@skinnyjeans: well, you’re name is skinny jeans. Says a lot.

 @CaliCol: damn dawg

East coast killa, just wait till mtb picks up speed here

The fact that he did the “step over the garage door sensor” proves he’s human and not droid. So stoked to see him take a win this year!!!

You can always retake a test but you can never rerace a World Cup.

This kid has an amazing future in downhill. This is the year he takes his first podium if not his first win. Go Luca!
  • 3 0
 Didn't he podium at Losinj?
  • 4 0
@mtbikeaddict: You're absolutely right. Completely forgot about that. Okay then, this is the year for his first win. If not, I buy the beer. Wink

This reminds me of Stevie Smith sooo much! All the best for the upcoming season Luca! Keep that head on straight and the results will come!!

Dude props...good people good family. Me and my boy have a similar relationship. Love riding together and even though he's hell of smart, he can persue whatever dreams he wants...no pressure for school. He's getting older and will probably be leaving home in the next couple of years, brought a tear to my eye seeing that connection and what it will be like when he's moved out.

Love the Dyno cartoon of Luka!!! Go Luka This is the year!!!!

Interesting how he trains on a 27.5" trail bike, even though his DH bike is 29".
  • 2 0
Matt Walker (GBR) said he is riding/training for fun on enduro 27.5 but for DH 29er its more like carrying good speed. It makes sense for me
  • 3 1
Gwin is training on an E-bike. What do you make of that then?
  • 1 0
he & Walker grew up racing a bit of Pro BMX. Small bikes are fun.
  • 6 0
Definitely my top pic for 2019 overall title.
  • 2 2
Quite the prediction. Think ticking off that first win will be priority number 1.
  • 2 0
@onemanarmy: agreed. Should be a close season this year. The top ten are stacked.
  • 4 0
I was hoping the same, but seeing Neko taking these wins in the US over Luca is a little bit of a surprise. But, maybe Luca is holding back and making sure he makes into the WC season healthy and ready to rumble.
  • 4 0
@Lotusoperandi: or maybe the M29 just fits Neko's riding better than the Tues did
  • 1 0
def gonna be a year for the young guns...Shaw, Vergier, Bruni and Peiron will def be at the top! Of course you never know when someone will have a breakout year like Peiron did last year. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 3 0
@onemanarmy: Pierron ticked his first win and the title in one season. IT CAN BE DONE! Hope Luca can do it.
  • 4 0
 @patch92: so did Gwin.
  • 1 0
@Lotusoperandi: girlfriend drained too much of his testosterone the night before. I'd imagine dating an "endurance " athlete could wear a fella out.

Good problems to have
  • 3 1
Nathan St. Claire is also at the top of the list, being this is his first year as pro. Representing North Carolina...Luca Slays and hope to see a win this year, one or two but hope for the best for all the racers. Just sayin don't be surprised to see Nathans name up there with Luca...RAMFB....

Very impressed by his attitude and approach to life, it will serve him well throughout his life. On a more immediate note, his riding reminds me of Greg Minnaar, deceptively fast due to what appears to be conservative body posturing and movements. No coincidence they're teammates Smile
  • 3 0
also rides a bit like Vergier...although with that said, he has always been smooth and fast...great addition to the SC team!
  • 4 0
Cant help but root for Luca. Nice kid and never bet against the guy that is consistently the most deceptively fast
  • 1 0
Cool video and he does come across a nice bloke... but... not so sure about the do-your-studies-later attitude.... my take on it is studies are a fall back, when things go south, not something you push away until you’re to old ( or concussed ) to even care... but, oh well... what do I know....
  • 4 0
I like this kid Quietly strong
  • 4 0
Great kid! My youngest is named Luca bc of this Luca!
  • 2 0
What a nice lad, pleased his parents encouraged him away from chasing the $$$$ & into doing something for the love. Glad it's working out.
  • 3 0
So smooth! Nuclear fast.....for sure there are some podiums in the future once he learns to calm the nerves come race day.
  • 4 0
 Yeah Luca! ????????
  • 3 0
This is your year Luca...Go get em..
  • 2 0
NC is pulling for you! Pisgah is all about reward after work, just keep working & you’ll get it!
  • 1 0
US racing is on the come up. Lot of unknowns out there right now, look at the top 20 from this ProGRT. Lot of em are unsupported as well....
  • 2 0
 Ahhhhh The Pisgah..........
  • 7 0
Looked like most of the riding was at DuPont or Windrock.
  • 1 0
@Mavic101: Definitely recognized Big Rock in Dupont for sure
  • 2 0
so stoked for you, go win this thing
  • 1 0
