Video: Berms, Berms and Berms

Nov 8, 2012 at 13:27
by Jordan Boostmaster
Back when it was dry out before all the rains came in the Fraser Valley, I filmed this little doozy with Ryan Van Kampen and Wyatt Griffioen! I wanted to feature all the best berms at Ledgeview where we always ride. The first trail is something that Ryan and Wyatt and friends were actually building themselves and it's not finished yet. After that we filmed some cool berms on Paperroute.

Does anyone else think that in general people are using bikes with excessive amount of travel for what the actually need? ( not specifically this video)
  • 15 4
 Rung what ya brung!
  • 17 13
ive always thought that! if you arent going to use all 8 inches you dont need an 8 inch bike
  • 28 9
Yea deffinatley! I see peeps on the local trails with massive amounts of travel, but hey it looks cool, right?
  • 289 4
Well since I can only afford 1 bike, I'd rather it be able to handle everything.
  • 77 1
this guys got the answer ^
  • 22 16
it's useless until you need it...
  • 58 3
Why does it matter what kind of bike people are riding. It all counts.
  • 38 1
not everyone can afford a bike for everything.. maybe they usually ride rough dh
  • 10 2
It's 'not specifically this video' but this video made you think of it. Interesting...
  • 8 0
I was thinking the same, plus how do they get them to the top? I would be better of with a full DH rig for some of my local trails but since I can only afford one and my legs are my lift I can't go with more than a 6 inches enduro bike. Ah well, I've heard stories about lucky people with lifts, lucky those Smile
  • 4 1
Good thing I like hiking! In all seriousness though. There's no way you can pedal up many dh trails, especially if there are no xc trails or fireroads around.
  • 49 1
What is the difference between running 4, 6 or 8 inches? They are riding, building and enjoying trails on their mountain bikes. I thought Pinkbike of all places would understand that...
  • 5 0
Rather it be able to handle everything? Which bike does that then?!
  • 22 0
Same goes for a full face helmet , if you put it to its full use or not, it's better to have it than not
  • 7 1
I ride a cheap 4 inch travel bike and it can do a lot more than people give it credit for.
  • 8 3
I think its funny that the kids who ride with jeans and tees ride both the bikes with the least amount of travel (dirt jump and slopestyle) and the bikes with the most amount of travel (DH). I rarely see these kids on enduro bikes. Just all about the extremes.
  • 18 0
look around to see three -ton SUVs with MT tires next to a supermarket. isn't it excessive amount of travel ?
  • 3 1
You'll probably find that they race and their local trails are no where near as gnarly as the tracks that they race on.
  • 2 5
ya I notice that kind of stuff too, I have a Norco Empire with 6" in the front, 5" in the back and its awesome! Its the best bike I ever had, perfect for ledgeview and even great for Whistler and everything.
For some reason pinkbike doesnt like keeping my facebook page link in the blog:

They are riding the smallest things they ride in this video they hit 45 foot gaps, big drops and also ride dh. they need that much travel
  • 9 0
These guys ride bigger jumps everyday then most of you would probably ever consider hitting, they need every last inch of that travel.
  • 5 0
he said its not about the video specifically
  • 5 4
If it wasn't about this video he wouldn't have thought about it then commented it under this video.
  • 6 0
 howardyudoing's coment ^

i think that if you can only afford one bike the best thing to get would be a slope style bike, because then you can ride trails and dirt jumps!
  • 1 0
Just get a Canfield One, eight inches and it climbs as good as most enduros
  • 2 0
hey.. 8 inches hater,, just try 0 inches Transition Klunker DH bike... sounds pretty much can handle everything. LOL Big Grin
  • 7 1
Just ride the bike that puts the biggest smile on your face and stop hating on everyone else! Riding a big bike on small stuff is totally unnecessary, and totally unnecessary can be really fun! Even if you don't NEED that much bike doesn't mean you shouldn't ride it. We're riding bikes dude, none of us do it because we NEED to.
  • 3 1
I don't ride DH but, I think the Idea is that DH bikes corner better because of low BB, heaps of sag, wider rims, stickier rubber etc. Car reviews have max g-force in a corner why not bike reviews. I don't want to hear an opinion of how much grip it has I want stats on which bike pulls the most G's in these berms. G force meters on all new bikes, tyres, wheels etc tested please.

There seems to be a bike snob attitude coming out at the moment . Took my scalp to a local trail centre recently and had some random bloke I didn't know make a comment on how I had the wrong bike for the trail . A little further down the fire road is a full on DH section with large drops and jumps which even has a sign on saying you need the right equipment to ride on this section of trail, But apparently because I wanted to ride a lighter trail that wasn't allowed on my big bike even though I could go down the lighter trail 4 times as fast as he could on his xc/am bike. IMO it is no one else's business what bike I am riding on what trail. I ain't a WC class rider I am just out to enjoy myself on my bike if you don't like that go away and keep it to yourself!!
  • 4 0
My bike is total over kill for my local trails , apart from some of my big hitter jumps , but the thing is it's perfect for weekends away uplifting .
If some one wants to buy me a bike for every trail situation so I don't offend thier views on ' the right bike for the trail ' then they are free to do so ( I still slay the people that ride the 'right' bike for my local trails , and still slay them on the ' proper ' DH stuff too )
  • 2 1
Get what you're saying WillMTBIrvine. See riders, especially younger ones, pushing DH bikes 3 miles to ride 1 mile on trails that can be taken with 120-160mm. There is more finesse to riding a smaller travel bike. If you're gonna have one bike though I think 160mm-180mm is the best way to go to do it all; bike park, enduro, all mtn. That's how I built my bike. It depends on where you live though. If you're having fun and pedaling, I guess that's all that counts. I like being on my bike the whole time. Nice riding in the vid!
  • 2 2
Yeah but everyone has to start somewhere and if your final goal is to race DH why would you buy an all mtn bike then have to shell out a ton of money to buy another bike when it becomes useless for racing DH on? It all depends were you want to end up with your riding if your only interest is turning up to a trail centre riding round for a few hours then going home then buy an all mtn bike. If you want to race DH but only have fairly tame trails local to you your gunna buy a DH bike and then push it three miles if you have to to get the practice in you need to race. To be honest its all a BS argument ride what you comfortable on and leave other people alone that's all there is to it. Don't agree there is more finesse to riding a smaller travel bike at all it takes real skill and style to ride a DH bike at full speed down a gnarly trail you have got to be on it or you will put yourself in hospital...

flag dirtyknobbies (Nov 9, 2012 at 7:39) (Below Threshold)
Unless you live/ride somewhere where it's super chunky rocky, or hucking your nutz, you don't need a DH bike...so overkill. They should have been on Enduros not Demo's in this video. In reality the new SJ FSR EVO should share similar geometry as the Enduro for those days when 6.7 inches is too much travel.
  • 6 0
Old ladies bike, DH rig, enduror, xc bikes.. who cares? it's all good fun, and that is the only thing that matters, having fun!
  • 3 1
Why do you guys care? I think its awesome seeing big DH bikes tossed around, takes alot more effort than those little flickable bikes.
  • 1 2
Someone told me I shouldnt wear a neckbrace with my AM helmet...I was like: Doood!?
  • 4 0
he's right, the leatt can actually make it easier to brake your neck if you aren't wearing a full face.
  • 1 1
@ jonnyhill2011, I would have to fully agree with that bike snob statement, pg 16 of the Oct 2012 Mountain Bike Action magazine has an article titled "Its about the bike" in which the author states that all trail access other than bike parks should be denied to long travel bikes because thy are "too capable". I really think the writer Jimmy Mcllvain is a sorry xc rider who gets his panties in a bunch when he's riding his stiff xc rig and get passed by a much more capable bike, and then he even has the gall to blame all trail damage on people on long travel bikes!! I personally only own a 5 inch bike but from the sounds of his article he might even have a problem with that, and that is what an bike industry magazine is preaching. Xc riders just need to stay off the gnar if they cant keep up!

it generally wasnt about this vid. if i this comment on a video with 12 year old with a trek session 88 hitting a 1 ft kerb i wouldnt of got any replies likewise if i did in on a vid of rampage or DH WC i would of got a shit load of hate. last season i was riding a local trail me and my buddies were hitting an average size table on our hartails and a guy with a DH bike came so we moved outta his way, and he just rolled over the top. this incident inspired me to write a comment to see what people think. i too agree its about just getting out there and riding, i would love a dh bike, but being 15 and still in school (oviously) i cannot afford one. im getting low travel fr/ slopestyle bike soon that i will be using on my local trails as its ideal because it will jump, corner and soak up any medium hits i do and so therefore a DH wont be neccesary. But yeah, was just looking to see what people think.
  • 2 0
 well said. i agree completely
  • 1 0
llamaman110 I was making a statement about people telling people what to do. The quote is from "Sh@T MTBers say" that Seb Kemp shot
  • 28 1
Holy Jesus, there is more intro than actual riding...

I hate to come off as a worry wort but is anyone else concerned about a rusty old car right next to what looks to be a high speed set of corners? Yes trees and rocks also hurt but to me that car would F someone up proper.
  • 24 0
oh mom you never let us have any fun!
  • 1 0
It's not exactly a green trail, honestly though, it may look easy, but it takes skill to go through those berms fast enough and especially if your gonna hit the jump at 1:14, you really need to know how to ride your bike just to clear it
  • 2 0
We have a local trail with an old rusty car right next to it. One of the locals sliced her arm up real good once. We call the trail tetanus (cause if you get cut you might need a shot).
  • 9 0
anyone else notice the nicely color coordinated outifts/bikes/helmets?
  • 3 0
 who could miss it.
  • 2 0
blaaaah!!!! ..what is it that you´re crying about? don´t you have the skills to kill berms like those dudes do? or do you have humongous balls?.. skip the commentbox if you just wanna let the world know that you´re not satisfied in any reason. shut the!
let everyone choose his own choice of weapon, doesnt matter what kinda travel! i know guys killin bighitters on a hardtail, and others hitting huge dirtjumps with their 8". am i wrong to say at least its all about one thing: eNJOY tHE rIDE. and in my opinion, Ryan and Wyatt seem to have it. ... cubsrtbest99 said it already: "Why does it matter what kind of bike people are riding. It all counts." ride on.
  • 1 0
I like to ride down the mountain fast therefore I prefer a dh bike way better to have maximum travel. We shuttle our bikes up and down or hit whistler, silver star etc. some of us have no intentions of traveling up hill that's lame must have as much travel as humanly possible!!!!
  • 1 0
You need an Karpeil Apocalypse. Over 11 inches of travel. Full xtr, carbon cockpit and it may just come in under 50lbs.

That was pretty sick man, filmed so well, felt lots of energy from the video. Should do another one sometime, maybe about "sending it".
  • 1 0
I enjoyed the style of that, good work on the nice intro/outro, gave it more of a film feel however I think that some of the slow mo helmet shots were a bit to wide/mid shots and made it a bit awkward to watch, i find close ups makes this kinda thing not quite so.. eugh haha! But good job as always dude some nice exciting camera angles in there and you're really using the steadycam to your advantage! Good job!
  • 1 0
Hey what are some good trails to hit this time of year at ledgeview? just moved to abby and wanna get some riding in. don't wanna screw up the trails if they are muddy so just wonderin what ones would be good to go on right now?
  • 1 0
Great video, nicely made. Great riding too. Kudos! I've never ridden Ledgeview, it looks fantastic. Maybe next Spring/Summer...I'll have to speed up the film to look like these superstars though ;-)

As for the comment on the amount of travel one should have...if you can afford more than one bike, bring the right bike for whatever you're doing that day. If you can only afford one bike (I know it gets expensive fast), pick something that works for the majority of the riding you do and that's best suited to your ability. But I'm singin' to the choir here, right?

Whatever the bike ya have, ride it hard and have fun. I think we can all agree on that.

'Rung what ya brung' (from bikeboardorblade) is an awesome saying!

I would give my left nut for some dry, dusty track!...
Summer in Scotland this year was really quite rubbish and mostly wet... (As most of the UK)
Now it's the thick of winter and i'm just so sick of the sight of mud, mud and more mud...
I don't normally mind a muddy winter but after a wet and muddy summer... geeze-louise...I WANT THAT DUST! Frown
  • 1 0
ok I watched this vid, thought these guys are rippin a fun trail and it's been a really long time since I've been to Ledgeview and I have to get back there. Super fun. I started reading some comments and it's turned into this debate over what bike they should or shouldn't be riding. Who the eff cares?? If you are strong enough to ride/hike a big bike to the top or skilled enough to rip a small bike down or whatever combination then it doesn't really matter does it. You all seen Road Bike Party? Not that I'm saying to ride a road bike on this stuff, just saying, the rider is as important as the bike. Find the bike (or bikes if you can afford) that suits your style, develope your skill and don't dis anyone else for being different.

Those guys were shreddin! High speed burm bangin and jumps? Looks like prime riding for a dh bike to me!
