It was another sell out crowd of participants for the third round of the California Enduro Series, run by CCCX and held at Toro Park near Monterey. The venue sits just a few miles east of the world famous Laguna Seca Raceway, home of the Sea Otter Classic. The trails were challenging and the weather warm. One unique aspect of this round was the mixed start; racers were allowed to choose which stage they wanted to start, with pros and experts choosing between stages 1 and 2 and sport and beginner choosing between stages 3 and 4. Here's a recap of how the day shook down!

The event began with open practice on Friday at 12pm. Many riders chose to come a little later in the day.

Leticia Villareal and David Hardwick came up Early Thursday morning from Orange County to get some practice time in first thing Friday.

The TRP Brake Zone was in full enforcement or should we say full lack of enforcement. The idea of the Brake Zone was to set the quickest trap speed in MPH . Here a rider comes through at 25.2 mph. Not the fastest on the day but a solid effort for sure. Top Speed went to the event organizer Keith DeFiebre who clocked in at 33.2 MPH.

 more enduro THAN this

 I mean you're not wrong....

Riding your bike on smooth trails is better than not riding your bike at all, however!!!

It's also nice to have a new local race and venue in the CES.

Bikes are rad! Smile

If you want to have a race series across multiple locations in the greater CA area then not every course is going to be a rock garden technical showdown. I get the feeling that most people who whine about courses not being technical enough haven't been doing their interval training. ;-)

@norcal101: Sorry, but I have to disagree. Fitness should be a factor, but not the only factor. They had similar issues at the first round as well. There was a section on Stage 1 that was almost a mile long on a gravel road that had zero elevation change. Because of the length of the section it was really the deciding factor.

This is not entirely a CES issue, but they are obviously not offering enough to promoters of the successful series like Socal Enduro to be interested in hosting events. They had an event listed for San Diego at a great location, but they could not get an organizer on board.

It is pathetic that we have some the best riding in the world located in California and these are the best trails we can find to race on.

Nebraska enduro series has the same problem

@salespunk: whoa - Feeling better about TX races. A lot less elevation but we have an ex 4x nat team memeber and an ex nat champ in Super D puting together amazing courses. did anyone race a cyclocross bike?
  • 2 0
@salespunk: California does have amazing riding, but really how much of it is open to the public and legal? Most of the sweet edits and sick pics that the bike companies put out are sure as hell not from public trails.

 @lee661: ok then.

@whatyousaid: There ya go. Perfect use of "then".

@norcal101: no doubt... We could have a stand and hold comp, along with a boulder for a dope photo opp for people who don't actually want to race... I would put our athletes coming up through our events up against athletes from any other series any day of the week. Marco Osborne's first win was at one of our less technical races against a few established riders and it put him on the map... and he keeps working hard to win whatever course there is to race on cuz that dude is a for real bike racer... That's what we do in California, race bikes, for real, not for show...

"Most people call it enduro but I call it XC" -Aaron Gwin.
....
Yup, he was right.

You are taking that quote out of context. But still pretty humorous.

@ryansimonovich: Hardly out of context. Aaron was clearly alluding to this situation.

Photos do no justice. Some of the stages were not so xc with 6" deep sand , chutes and people crashing left and right. Toro is no ski resort but it is very hard to go fast there. Keith Defeibre( the guy who build Sea Otter Slalom) used to put on a race series there. It has been the starting point for the likes of Marco Osborne, Kiran Mackinnon and many, many others. Technical is not just about blasting rock gardens.
It was a skill race not a fitness race.
And I hope the do it again next year.
  • 3 1
Well said Ian, riding there isn't terribly difficult, but going hella fast is! So loose and unpredictable in spots. More than once I found myself having trouble gauging when I would need to break for a turn due to just how fast you're going and then it dawns on you that it falls away and there really isn't any traction... Ok, a few practice laps would have really helped!

It was fun but honestly....nothing Enduro about it.

Was pipeline part of the course?
  • 4 1
Nah, saved that for the locals they did. Lower lower was all they had in there.

@THCLars: best trail out at toro I think, glad it didn't get hammered.
  • 2 0
@brncr6: Totally agree. Besides, they would still be looking for that one guy!
  • 1 0
shhhhh... don't talk about pipeline, the HWY68 hillbillies are listening...
  • 1 0
@HITNRUN: dare I ask? But who are the hwy68 hillbillies?
