Reader Story: How Much Traction Does a New Tire Buy You?

I keep at least two in the cars spare compartment. I might tear a tire somewhere remote. The bike shop could be closed, another rider might need one. Oh god what if the shop only has wire bead Kenda Smokes. How could I possibly enjoy riding a bike again if my tire combo isn't exactly what I want. I'm off to stash a few more spares just in case, probably some more tubes as well.

@vtracer: QR axels have a tendency to come loose when ridden hard. This leads to poor shifting, a rattly rear end, potential for a lost wheel entirely and is annoying to have to stop and retighten mid ride. IMO, for many people a QR would be ok but if a rider wants to advance his or her level of riding it could be problematic and as you mentioned difficulty finding a new or better wheel.

Value Field Test: Marin Rift Zone

I ride a RZ 3 as well, was immediately blown away by the capability of this bike. I agree about the wheels, I plan to replace/upgrade my wheels once they are shot but after 2 seasons of hard riding they remain true and with good spoke tension. This is the only bike I have ever owned that did not require any upgrades to make trail worthy.
