US Open Giant Slalom Bikes of choice

Are you wondering what you can do to your bike to make it more suited for the slalom tracks? Well, I took the liberty of snapping photos of some of the top riders on course today and their bikes so...

Check out the photos inside!Wondering what you can do to make your bike more slalom specific? Here are some photos of some of the top riders on the Giant Slalom course today. At 17 years old Mitch Ropelato was pinned today, beating the field by 0.72 of a second, which is a big deal on a 40 second course. Especially when the gap between first and 15th was only 2.28 seconds! So, here are some images of a few of the top bikes on course today.

Mitch Ropelato with his 2011 P3

Mitch pinned - photo by Ian Hylands

Mitch was one of a couple riders out today on hardtail's, and it obviously proved to be very effective. Mitch qualified first in today's Giant Slalom event, so obviously the setup he has is working great for him. Maybe those carbon Edge wheels are motorized as well!

photo
Monster Energy Specialized Slalom Bike

Here is Sam posing with his race bike that piloted him to a 10th place qualifying place. Brendan Fairclough had an identical bike, along with Troy Brosnan, all of which were in the top 10 standing. Wicked setup, but is the rear suspension slowing them down? We will know come race day!

photo
Brian Lopes and his Carbon Ibis

Lopes was out killing today as well, and tying for 3rd place with Gerrit Beytagh sure proved that Lopes is ready to kill it tomorrow. He looked super fast on course, and finished a minor 1.22 seconds behind Mitch.

photo
Jared Rando and his Giant Slalom bike

Jared Rando has been looking fast on course as of late, and his 4th place qualifying result is a testament to his speed. A ton of riders were rocking the slalom course on the new short travel Fox 831 fork, so it must be doing its job right!

photo
Lars Sternberg and his fancy new Double

Transition Bikes' Lars Sternberg has been putting in some serious time on his new Double. The Double is marketed more so as a slopestyle bike, however clearly its working just fine on slalom tracks for him with a 9th place position on his qualifying run. Lars managed to qualify 0.9 seconds ahead of Sam Hill, so the Double must be doing its job!

photo
Tyler McCaul and his GT

Tyler McCaul has been working on his speed and racing skills and obviously his work has payed off. Tyler qualified in at 15th place, which is still an awesome result! Go hard tomorrow T-Mac!

In the women field Jill Kintner of Transition racing piloted her new Transition Double to the top of the list with a time of 43.15 seconds. Her and Lars are running the same bikes so clearly its not a women, or men specific bike.

photo
Tracy Moseley and her Trek Ticket

Rolling at 3rd place was Tracy Moseley on her fancy new Trek Ticket. The new Trek team color and graphics look great, and obviously the bikes are working great. Oh, and look at that, another Fox 831!

So that's how the bikes looked for the Giant Slalom event today at the US Open here at Diablo freeride park. By the looks of things Mitch Ropelato and Jill Kintner are gonna be the ones to beat tomorrow!

nice looking bikes! loving the look of the 2011 p bikes
  • 16 0
 Apparently, 2011 p3 frame weights 4lbs!
  • 3 0
4.78 or something there close... i remember from vitalmtb's slide show of it, then again thats a claimed weight so who knows, looks pretty sick to me Blank Stare if its gonna be black i see people dishing out alot of $$$ for colour-full spec sheets..
  • 12 4
i have to say .. that specialised is not hot
  • 1 0
ya, the p.3 is frame only next year, supposedly 4.7 pounds, and around $500 but comes with some extras, like a seat and a headset
  • 4 2
i know specialised are beasts but that frame isn't very nice to look at

Are those Rock Shox cops in the background about to arrest Hill for the debadged Fox shock on his SX?

 agreed

As far as Lopes goes on Ibis, it is true that he was forced out of GT. I'm willing to bet that Ibis gave him a portion of the company to come on board because I find it unlikely they have enough money to pay him.

Sternberg needs someone to get his bike sorted. That setup is a mess. Mismatched rotors, no tapered steerer on the fork, a mid cage rear derailleur, and invisible logos for the brand he is selling. (and no, I'm not looking for a job as a race mechanic. Just pointing out that the setup isn't very pro.)

I think Ropelato still does not have a bike sponsor. Really a shame considering how fast he is.

Great Idea, the most asked questions on forums these days is pro bikes and their set ups,Now if we could only have list of parts?
  • 4 1
if you know your parts you can tell just by looking at it. you can pretty much see every part on the bike.
  • 1 0
Im sure you can spot the prototype parts too.
  • 1 0
the fox on there is specially tuned for that bike it bottoms out half way through the shocks stroke and i dont think rockshox has been able to get a shock to fit the sx's yet.

Lopes ibis, and rondos giant look like XC bikes...they basically are all mountain bikes right? Not sure why Lopes is riding for Ibis, no DH platform or anything worthwhile really...

That new P3 is looking SWEET.

i agree. he could get a way better sponsor but he chooses to ride for ibis even tho they dont make a 4x, slalom, or dh bike.
  • 17 5
u guys r such dumbasses ibis bikes are frikin amazing the carbon frames are super stiff and the dw link is incredible the mojo is the best pedaling bike i've ridden hands down, and iv'e got an hd on order which will be just as sweet, better than any trek or specialized or giant
  • 8 5
I wouldn't go as far as calling them dumba$$e$, but they are misinformed. The Ibis Mojos are very capable bikes for Lopes
  • 9 6
You both completely missed the point. Yes good bikes, But no DH or 4X specific platform, and it seems weird that such a prolific rider like Lopes would ride for a smaller company, that doesn't make a bike to cater to his riding styles, 4X and DH.
  • 4 6
ibis are great bikes and everything but they arent made for the type of stuff brian lopes does.
  • 15 3
As rude as this sounds, Lopes at 39 Lopes is nearing the end of his career and by moving over to Ibis he has put himself in a position where he has input on the bikes he rides and a possible job when he leaves professional riding. The Mojo HD is a capable gravity bike.
  • 6 3
havent you guys ever thought that maybe lopes is with Ibis for several reasons. First off, they are a completely local based small company. Second off, they will take his input WAY more seriously than say specialized, just due to the fact there is less riders on IBIS factory team, which means their voices will be louder (think the same kinda ordeal as being in a class of 45 in school vs a class of 20. The class of 20 will get the most attention being there is less people.

Also, IBIS is probably happy to do any adjustments etc to lopes bikes with no question (not that that differs for any other pro rider, but his is probably a lot more personal than a massive frame mfg.

in the end, nothing is wrong with ibis what so ever. They make killer bikes. I have demo'd a few mojo's and I have to say it was an amazing ride. If lopes feels he can progress on the IBIS, maybe it's the best choice for him.

Also take note, Lopes went from one of the bicycle mega giants to a tiny company. That alone might give you guys ideas why he rides for em.
  • 3 0
pimpedaline did you happen to see how lopes did on the qualifying? Also I really dont see how a Mojo HD is not a good 4X bike. Strong and great pedaling platform seem like ideal things to me.
  • 3 1
The Ibis Mojo is the most versitile mid travel bike I have ever ridden. Check this video out on this "flexy" "XC" "Trail Bike". vimeo.com/12003687
  • 2 1
Mis-informed and un-initiated. Lopes these days is riding more endurance type dh races such as the Mega series hence the Mojo. He did a 4x race a while back on the Tranny which is also carbon. Ibis make magnificent bikes. Eventually my garage will contain nothing but Ibis. Cant wait till I get my first one. Yes I have ridden one.
  • 2 1
Facepalm Ibis and nothing worthwhile don't belong in the same sentence.
  • 1 1
rffr, i part of have an idea why Lopes went from GT to Ibis... the part where it wasn't his choice to leave GT.

Suicidedownhiller - I think that many companies don't have a dedicate 4X/DS bike since they don't sell as many units as the other types. If there was huge demand, Giant for sure would have one in their line-up - they finally bit the bullet on 29ers afterall, and it is selling so well the Anthem X 29er is coming soon. As for Ibis, like others say and Brian has proven, their bike is very versatile (as is the Trance X). I guess too that carbon is expensive to prototype and create the molds (e.g. the old Giant Anthem Advanced mold cost $90k, but Ibis frames cost less to produce than Giants, so their molds are probably cheaper, but I'm surre they still cost many tens of thousands), so producing another frame is not cost effective for them.

 ^^ Giants = Giant's - apostrophe!

was that really necessary to correct him?
  • 8 0
He was correcting himself, and it probably wasn't necessary for me to correct you.
  • 1 1
Lopes always was more into 4X/DS than DH. And he rides more XC than anything. He isn't a "gravity" rider. Go look up the "lopes-link"... As for 4X bike go look up the Ibis Tranny.
  • 1 0
well for his bikes he gets custom geometry for 4x/DS. He also has all 4X parts on his bike
  • 1 0
Umm, it was completely his choice to leave GT. No matter what, he could have got another contract. He chose not to.

This isn't hockey or football where riders are traded... riders have 100% of the say on who they ride for. Unfortunately, just because a rider would want to ride for someone, doesn't mean he would be offered the spot, but he would still have the choice on pursuing it or not.

Only in sports where players are traded, do they have less of a choice.

Also, like said, lopes 4x bike is probably more tailored to 4x than a lot of the hybrid bikes out there that are 4x/slopestyle. The ibis is DEF NOT a slopestyle bike in any form.

rffr, here is a quote from Lopes' own website (Paula's words) regarding leaving GT:

"GT Bicycles has decided to take their legendary "race-inspired" brand in a "new direction".
Which leads me to question what the "new direction" is, since Brian has been supplying them "wins" from the get-go. It is clear to me that the only "direction" to go is down, specially after this year's World Championship win. With that said, I don't wish for that to happen, since we have been fortunate enough to meet some great people through GT, but I do whole-heartedly question the thinking and strategy behind it this "new direction" set forth by corporate."

Does that sound like it was his choice? I'm sure Paula is holding back on what she really thinks.

2011 p is awesome, but its always cool so see what people ride, we all check out fellow riders ride's when we hit our trails / parks, its part of the game ya know?
  • 3 0
i doon't like the sx trail color...
  • 3 0
not the sx trail.. just SX(ie only 4.2 inches of travel)and yes 2010 has alot of bikes in the spesh line up that have horrid colour combos... just my opinion but the 09 was better looking
  • 2 0
3$ for a can of paint at a hardware store. Problem fixed. Unfortunately you can't buy common sense, but you can buy plenty of paint.
  • 1 0
ahhh but then when u need warranty your f*cked Blank Stare spesh doesn't let you paint/raw their frames
  • 1 0
Only if you strip the paint first. Just primer over the oem shit and paint over that.

I can't remember the last time I claimed warrenty on a bike frame. Just don't buy frames that are known to crack like commencal's. (lol)

btw, I have never heard about a demo or sx cracking. Anyone else around here?
  • 1 0
was more thinking of a something like a p. but still.. im all for making a bike look good but i dont want to risk almost 2 grand down the drain if i paint it then crack it... may get a sx or a rampant next year, will have to see...
  • 1 0
if CG was there his new bike is wayyy better than all of them, just been to see it in the flesh its sweet
  • 1 1
of all the riders out there ibis only took one and thats lopes and lopes dont need any specific bike to get to the top hes a great rider.....
  • 1 0
i want the p3 and the ticket so bad
  • 1 0
thats why he took the sticker off the shock
  • 1 3
anyone notice that Sam hill has NO decal on his FOX rear shock. Whats up with that? Might be some sort of prototype? I dont even think hes sponsored by Fox, think its strictly RS.
  • 1 0
Probably because Rock Shox doesn't have tooling open for that funky shock mount on the back end of the shock. I'm sure he would run a sponsor's shock if he could, he is a pro.
  • 2 0
The rear shock on Hill's SX is OEM and proprietary to the frame (i.e.: the "funky" linkage). Does anyone research things anymore or just blurt comments?
  • 1 0
The GT is my favourite, it looks like a shotgun
  • 1 0
 same, i love it.
  • 1 0
wow. 5 of those guys are running sdg saddles
  • 1 0
 is it a rp23 on sam's bike?
  • 1 0
is the rear suspension really nessecary?
  • 1 0
 Yea it was.
  • 1 0
Is there a Video of Mitch Ropeletto crashing in finals?
