Here at Hutchinson UR team we believe that Urban Downhill is one on the best ways to shine the spotlight on MTB and show the world that it belongs with the best sports. This year, with the first ever world series, it's a unique opportunity to take the Urban race to the next level. For that we need heroes and we need the best downhill riders in the world to make the race as exciting as possible. That's why Mick is going to race the full series and that's why all team riders will also try to make as many races as possible during the season.

Mick Hannah Q&A:

How do you feel about racing the full city downhill world tour?

I have always enjoyed going to the city downhill races. They're not my main focus so there is less pressure. There is also a great atmosphere with thousands of people lining the courses. I know it's a great way to bring our sport to more and more people.

What's the best part of the Urban races for you?

My favorite part of these races is the people who come out to support us. We're racing in the middle of the city where they walk to work or to the corner store every day so they are able to understand the terrain. I think that helps them to get really excited about what the riders are doing.

How is the risk factor compared to more traditional downhill races?

The city downhills are obviously way more risky than what we usually ride. There's all sorts of metal and concrete structures that we are racing past. For me personally it is important to ride a little safer than I normally would. I think it's important to come here and put on a show, but I have to remember to be careful.

Do you think more top world cup guys should do urban races as well?

I'd love to see the top guys looking for ways that they can help the sport grow in general. I know city downhills are not traditional, but I love to ride my bike and I love to see people get excited about bike riding. Bikes are a very clean and fun way to stay healthy or have fun or for work. People ride to work or earn a living on their bikes in different ways all over the world. They are also a great way to get out and see places. I definitely think world cup downhill should stick to the forest, but I also know that there are other ways to build the image of our sport.

Which bikes and which set up have you chosen?

I am riding my regular POLYGON DHX race bike. The 3 changes I have made for this week are stiffer suspension, narrower bars to miss some of the tight handrails and more pressure in my tires.

I would do anything for local urban DH races. I've even considered moving back to Guatemala where I lived for a couple of years just for urban DH riding, shuttling is supper cheap and easy, just pay the next dude with a pickup a buck and you're to the top.

I'd love to have a go at one of these, might just get kitted up, buy a whistle and ride down through Nottingham and piss off all the Saturday shoppers

Farq dat!! If I managed to survive the stairs there's no way I'd miss the bollards in the middle of the "track", and I could see myself shooting out into space over those wooden berms. Respect to Mick Hannah, that's one knarly mofo ride.

Mick, Please don't get hurt - I want to see you smash the WC courses!

what has always puzzled me about urban DH is that the riders always have knobbly off road tyres. if they are riding on pavements and roads surely knobbly tyres would not work as well? I would have thought that some kind of street tyre would grip pavements and roads better, no?
  • 2 0
I'm guessing street tyres don't have a big enough volume to prevent pinches maybe ?

I use to run these back in the day for DJ till I realized I could shed 10lbs with lighter tires but the Maxxis Hookworm would be my choice for urban DH

Im guessing that they run them because of breaking and cornering grip on uneven surfaces a slick would roll alot faster but you comprises grip and braking which is really important especially for those narrow parts
  • 2 0
but surely a slicker tyre gives more surface area so more grip?
  • 1 3
yeah it will do , but most slick/street tyres come in maximum 2.25-ish last time I looked.
  • 2 0
Yeah so all those stair gaps and stuff mean high chance of puncturingcsomething like the rock razor will work well

As Zalgrath already said Maxxis Hookworm www.maxxis.com/Bicycle/Urban/Hookworm.aspx
If any of you have slick tires on MTB or urban bikes try them out of adhesion on variable surfaces. You'd be amazed how well they hook up on Dirt, Grass and different paving surfaces-so long as it isn't loose or wet. I think not optimising tires for urban landscapes is prob down to sponsor responsibilities and these races are more for fun and publicity show so the last 10th of a second is unimportant, Other thing is these are more point and shoot races, not much corner lean going on, you can really crank a Slick shod MTB over on pavement MUCH more than knobblies . I hope they work some opportunity for lean into the courses.

Id like to see a Contour - GoPro - Action Cam, side by side comparison, cause GoPro isnt very good in low light which does bugger all since most of my riding is in forests
  • 4 0
There's loads on YouTube yer lunatic. Sony action cam pisses on go pro.
  • 1 0
 Amen.
  • 1 0
 Contour went bankrupt last summer.

The people in south america are fanatics for this, just a wee bit risky for polygon because of a potential injury with mik to sell more bikes and get exposure, but thats part of the gig. The track looks gnarly.

Was Edward snowden there cause man that's a lot of whistle blowing!
  • 2 0
And the award for the most course officials/whistles goes to...............
  • 2 0
So many whistles! That has to be distracting for the riders...
  • 2 5
I thought the same thing at first but I think its actually the rider with the whistle to let people know hes coming
  • 4 2
Cmon dude.. You really think people are gonna ride with a whistle in their mouth ?
  • 3 0
 feisty
  • 2 0
when people dont realise you're joking...
  • 2 1
Concentrated riders dont even hear them to be honest
  • 1 0
No different than racing DH at a mountain...unless your races don't have course marshals...
  • 1 0
Yeah seriously all races need marshals with whistles so they can track a rider top to bottom safely!
  • 1 0
Would love to go watch one of these! Where is more info on when and where the series will be?
  • 1 0
I didn't even see a dog on the course!!!!!
  • 1 0
the speed the riders get strait of the gate is insane
  • 1 0
Not as distracting as someone stepping right in front of you !!!
  • 2 0
 100% sick mick
  • 1 0
Who was it that said I don't normally like DH Videos
  • 1 0
U have to cut your handlebars for this!
  • 1 0
Absolutely LOVE the looks of those new Polygons! Want!
  • 1 0
 Those whistles were so annoying
  • 1 0
Who glued the whistle to his helmet?
  • 1 0
I guess I am a purist, I simply cannot get pumped about urban DH.
  • 1 0
 What a bloody maniac!!!
  • 1 0
 MICK THE PINNER!!!!!
  • 1 0
 NOPE
  • 1 3
the new polygon look really gay with bos suspension, it needs a dvo emerald
  • 2 1
The DVO is a horrific looking fork that matches nothing but green and black bikes. The BOS is probably the best DH fork on the market now.
  • 2 0
r u kiddin? its the coolest thing if i had the money i would either get a black box boxxer or the dvo emerald, when making bikes companys should really take into acount that bike should have epic colour
  • 1 0
If you buy an emerald then you cannot have a blue, red, orange, purple, pink, brown, or multi coloured bike. It will look appalling. There is a reason forks are made black or white normally.
  • 2 0
but u can still get the the black emerald and even the bronze one that ive seen around and show me a pic where the original emerald looks shit? nothing beats cedric gracia santa cruz v10
