You'd be surprised. I am still riding my 01-02 Santa Cruz Bullit like Claw is riding in this video. Still with original fox Vanilla RC and Marz Bomber dual crown. I still take it off of drops 6'+ weekly.

The biggest downside is that my ride weighs 50 pounds!

Thats amazing, I loved super T, one of my idols back in the day for sure. I too was also wondering what happened to that guy! I'm glad to hear he's still ripping somewhere. All these big names, it's such a throwback! Schley, Tippe, Kinrade, Klassen, Gracia, Peaty!, Bourden, Watson (tour de france anyone?), Bender, Bear claw, all these guys were killing it! What a golden age for sure, wish I could make it out to this years RBR, maybe next year.

I remember my 2002 giant dh comp and to be fair that was one very capable bike. It may have been ten years ago but even back then those bikes were pretty sick. Admittedly not as capable as today's modern equivilants but not penny farthings like some may think
  • + 4
flag boid (Oct 2, 2012 at 16:56)
Very true. I've just come back to the sport after an 8 year gap and I don't think that dh bikes have advanced as much as people think. To me they just got a lot prettier.

It's just plain sick. I was in awe seeing this then, and am today. People like Schley, Gracia, Tippie and Simmons remind me of the true freeride spirit. I wish they were still in films, it's not all about slopestyle and jumps. They killed it then, they kill it now. It's serious badass. More retro MTB, lets get some of the early Kranked and NWD stuff on here.

flag petronius (Oct 2, 2012 at 20:09)
I agree with 'then', but you can see how hard the forks are bottoming, nevermind how many riders are being bucked by rear suspension they (as well as the techs) still didn't fully understand. These are test (madmen) riders on an "I dare you." course which has very nearly come to terms with the riders. The "while doing backflips and 360s" is standard in some "fr" comps, this is supposed to be its own thing. Rampage is Rampage. The line is the line. (And for some reason The Claw didn't win after that massive save in 2010.) That's why the real riders love it and don't care who wins.

This was the pinnacle of mountain biking. Take those guys and put them on today's bikes...oh THAT would be the best Rampage ever. They were real riders. They simply just sent it off the side of a cliff and showed us all what mountain biking was....riding down the side of a mountain. Now it's all about man made ramps....do today's riders feel they can only go big if there is a ramp? I dunno, if your actually doing Big Mountain riding in Utah, should you expect to see ramps? It's not the North Shore. I get it, kids today just want to see tricks...but for the rest of us, can we not have one contest that is ramp free...Crankworks is over...I want to see real big mountain riding, not more 360's off of f*cking ramps.
