I think most of the european pro rider are more likeable as the american fulltime pros. Pilgrim and all the other travel to every event around the planet during semenuk, zink and so on are only on the gold an diamond events. In my opinion thats not right. They should come up all over the planet to give their fans a show who pay their life by buying energy drinks and bikes... Just sayin
  • 21 5
 Totally agree.
  • 18 8
Except pilgrim lives in the uk there are way more small compitions over there then northamerica it costs him a lot less to travel to the comps
  • 46 9
Have you even seen the price of fuel in the UK??
  • 40 4
I'm sure Semenuk is earning enough from his Trek deal compared to Pilgrim riding for NS to afford it....
  • 20 14
Its because they cant afford to travel overseas to go to all these events, and its not just Zink and Semenuk if you look there is no Strait, Messere, Montgomery, Berrecloth, Rheeder, Fogelquist, Genovese, Groves, ect. It is basically all the North American riders. And the UK is like the size of one state or province so don't say its costing him so much to go to these contest because for the north american riders it costs so much that even if they win first they might be losing money on the trip.

ManuGi- that was the most ignorant post I've read on here in a long time. There's too many reasons to list off as to why but to start, basing how "likable" an athlete is by which events they go to is straight up stupid... just saying.
  • 19 18
@zoomzoomchicken- So thats a no! You haven't seen the price of fuel in the UK.
I nearly wet myself laughing with your logic that because the UK is smaller it costs us less to travel. Brilliant. lol
  • 10 5
@dusty-bones not sure that its cheaper to get to NZ from the UK than the states or Canada!

It probably costs us more to get to the airport and park than it does for a flight from LA to NZ!
  • 20 0
"Have you even seen the price of fuel in the UK??"

I know, takes massive commitment to drive from the UK to New Zealand, lucky he won, his fuel bill must have been crazy. [end of sarcasm]
  • 2 1
Those flights all cost about the same from here. Any one of them is not significantly cheaper than the others.
  • 9 0
no disrespect to all you guys in North America, but saying that it is cheaper to fly to friggin NEW ZEALAND from Europe, than from the states, is not a valid argument.
  • 5 1
Also to point out like one event in the UK is on the FMB tour and even then It was like a bronze so UK riders still have to travel abroad to go to pretty much any event. Also this event was in NZ which is literally as far from the UK as you can get whilst still being on the same planet. Also for people chatting about fuel costs: UK petrol is about £1.40 per litre, thats about 10 dollars per gallon. US is about 4 dollars. Just saying.
  • 15 0
Two Canadians, Sam Dueck and Kurt Sorge were there.
  • 6 1
Sam is probably just trying to get away from the horrible UK weather haha why fly around all the time if you live in BC or Cali
  • 2 0
That is a fair point nismo, I know where I'd rather be this time of the year out of the UK and NZ...
  • 11 13
@ ManuGi I think your full of shit. Zink and Semenuk should be able to spend there ("off season" a time line in which they do not have a contract binding obligation to there sponsors to full fill a contest schedule.) to do what ever the f*ck they would like! You know like ride for fun, where ever, when ever. ... Just saying
  • 9 0
@mtbken There was at least 3 Canadians there, Sid Slotegraaf as well. He is the one doing the double backflip in the above video.
  • 6 1
you try traveling all year round and see how long you last. It is seriously tiring, these guys are people too they want vacation time. Especially with all the videos they are involved in and product development. I bet if you were in their situation you would do the same thing.
  • 4 1
For an American to come to one of those contest's you are looking around $3,000 a pop. There are a lot more small contest's in Europe and they actually pay out better. Its just much easier for people like Sam to get "everywhere". Not to mention that Teva paid for all the athletes to come out for this contest. That is why a few there was a few more bigger names for the size of contest it was.. (Why not go if its free?) haha And after years of traveling all year round, I'm sure I would only hit the big ones up also if I had too..
  • 7 0
Sid "the kid" Slotegraf was there from Ontario and stomped a double backflip in best trick.A dh racer who trains at Joyride150 with Brett Rheeder and the rest of the Ontario crew.PROPS!
  • 3 3
thank you @scott-townes . couldnt agree more. its not like these guys make as much as football players and quite honestly the north american riders are the most famous so they also have many small promotional events to go to. ignoraant

Are we going to see Chad Kagy in the FMB. That flair whip was awesome and I've loved him at the xgames big air comps the last few years. I wanna see more BMX guys try to do MTB. With bmx getting so competitive and MTB getting more money in the future it could be a trend.
  • 2 1
and you think its got nothing to do with one of sams big sponsers being teva haha
  • 3 5
Riders don't pay their flights to contest... their sponsors do...thats what sponsoring is about and not getting free red bull like some people think.
  • 3 0
Manu- They get a travel budget so even though they technically don't pay for their own trips, that doesn't mean they can go to whatever and how many contests they want. The very top guys may be different but it's still not an unlimited fund for anyone.
  • 1 2
The trek team was in New Zealand in February, I'm sure they would have loved to be at the comp, timing just didn't line up!
  • 2 1
dusty bones, i dont really think that fuel costs and shit matter to zinc and semenuk...
  • 3 1
It is strategy that Semenuk only goes to big events that earn the most points, doesn't ride the petty comps and risk injury. I feel the judging is also weighted in his favor at the big shows, not really fair. Love to see Sammy putting in his kicks and giving us the show we all love to see. He deserves better scores than he gets (Claymore). PROPS

Pilgrim and Surge are TEVA sponsored athletes. i guess they should attend a TEVA slopestyle event right?

www.teva.com/Teva-Mountain-Biking-Athletes/athletes-mtb,default,pg.html
  • 2 0
He's got Trek, Maxxis, Sram(which is like 5 big companies all together) and red bull. Yeah there's enough earnings to travel to the European events!
  • 3 5
Why do you guys care if they have enough money to travel to relatively lower-placed FMB events around Europe? They're professional athletes, not clowns that have to attend and entertain the fans that are at each event. Sure fans are important but the guys risking their necks are more important so fanboys, kindly screw off with this judging someone based on how many events they go to... or speculating whether they can or can't. To be honest it's a really silly conversation to be having in the first place.

Then I have to say that the spaniards are killing it in all the other sports that, like the world, the brits did invented: football, basket, tennis, motogp, wrc, F1.... I don't say that because I'm from Spain, is a fact.
  • 11 0
 Is Vettel Spanish??
  • 7 3
Poms!! Phffff. Just because youve won a couple of cycling events doesnt mean youre killing it! However, on a brighter note - Sam Pilgrim is Da MAN!!!!.....hes so awesome.... are you sure hes not a kiwi? Brits arent that good surely Smile
  • 2 1
I'm pretty sure vettel is German, and I think @pichy means Fernando alonso...
  • 3 3
I mean Sam won 'cause he is so techy, stylish, tough....not for being Brit. If Soderstrom were sponsored by Teva, he will eat two Pilgs with fries for lunch in this event, Wink

What does having a comp in the Uk have to do with who wins? Semenuk doesn't always win at Crankworks and thats his hometown..
  • 4 4
No but he always comes out on top Fmb tour winner 2 years in a row while still only going to half that pilgrim goes to
  • 9 1
Really? Are we having the Semenuk Vs Pilgrim debate?? IMO Pilgs is more of a DJer than a slopestyle rider, and thankfully for Semenuk most FMB points have been awarded at the events he excels at. They're both AMAZING riders- I'm just hoping for an injury free season for them both and a great FMB tour. There's so many riders that have crazy skills... this year is gonna be good.

and [pichy] we did invented the whole world the first mechanically propelled 2-wheel vehicle was believed to have been built by Kirkpatrick MacMillan, a Scottish blacksmith, in 1839. A nephew later claimed that his uncle developed a rear-wheel drive design using mid mounted treadles connected by rods to a rear crank, similar to the transmission of a steam locomotive. Proponents associate him with the first recorded instance of a bicycling traffic offence, when a Glasgow newspaper reported in 1842 an accident in which an anonymous "gentleman from Dumfries-shire... bestride a velocipede... of ingenious design" knocked over a pedestrian in the Gorbals and was fined five British shillings
  • 3 1
At all the Americans who think we (uk) have loads of comps for pilgrim to win....Erm name me a UK based slopestyle comp where pilgr or any euro rider can make large money from a win.there aren't any that's why he has to travel to these worldwide events.we have lots of small dj comps where you win a handlebar and 50 quid if your lucky.the reason American riders don't leave America is you have huge events with huge money prizes, they don't need to travel to Aussie for a few dollars, plus a holiday for an American is going to a different state.
  • 2 0
There should be more big mtb events in NZ, thats worth it for all the big names to show. There is so much support over there for biking and awesome trails. NZ should also hold a world cup round there every year like Mount Saint-Anne or Forte Williams. I'll be there in 9 days can't wait. NZ rocks.

Sam is a great dirt jumper, but Jesus, it sounds like a lot of you British blokes just can't accept a win when he gets one. Watch Semenuk ride downhill or big mountain, he's by far the superior all around rider. Until Sam proves he can ride big mountain terrain with people like Sorge, Strait, Semenuk, Mccaul, he's still just an insanely talented dirt jumper in my eyes. He obviously has the skillset to become a big mountain rider, but it seems like he'd rather ride his hard tail dirt jumper and stay in an RV than head into the middle of nowhere up a 3000 meter mountain in a tent. C'mon Sam, we wanna see you ride Green River or the Frasier River Valley!
  • 1 0
Maybe Sam prefers riding Jumps than Big Mountain? It's his decision to make, yeah there's only one place in the UK similar to big mountain(the Atherton's quarry or whatever it's called) and that still is different, maybe Sam doesn't feel like trekking out to Utah just for big mountain anyway?
  • 1 0
Hold the phone, the only place to ride a big mountain in the UK is a quarry in Wales? Where the hell in Scotland do you live?
  • 1 0
There may be a few spots here and there but their usually either shite, very short, or weather dependent, there may be some places, but their nothing compared to anything in Utah, with weather being a major factor, it's not as good as what you think it is here.
