I honestly think people should care about whats on there own heads, not on others. I will always wear a helmet but i do not care at all if people don't wear them. Its their choice, some dh riders dont wear neck braces and some riders dont wear helmets. Focus on the riding and the video, not whats on the top of there head!
  • 3 0
I agree. I think not wearing a helmet is stupid. on the other hand I always wear leg, elbow and chest armour when I ride,(not for trail, only DH) that's my choice, and some people might think its over the top, but at 50 years old it takes a lot longer to heal and when you come off, and it hurts more than I remember than when I was 20.

I know a lot of riders. In the last 20+ years I've known a lot of people that have crashed (me, too!). Some of them left the scene on stretchers. The only ones that didn't end up OK weren't wearing helmets. And it's all cool to say that other people can do what they want until someone you've known since childhood has brain damage from crashing riding a drainage culvert. Or a friend is asking for donations for his buddy that got hit by a car and now he's looking at a six figure medical bill for treatment of a brain injury. Or the other time when I was in college and teaching basic bike maintenance, which I started with a helmet lecture. After one initial class I didn't see a particular student again. About a year later we bumped into each other and she thanked me for saving her life; a couple days after the class and after buying a helmet she was car doored and slammed her head into the street; recovery kept her out of school for a while.

I won't ride with people that don't have a lid; likewise I'm not super stoked to see a video of it.

stupid that 90% of the comments on this video post are about wearing a helmet. WHO GIVES A SHIT!! now including mine- damn it!

Wow, riley! Raking up the +props are yah?

Also look at the aspect that most bmx riders that don't wear a helmet for street videos like Chad Kerley, Bruno Hoffman,Broc Raiford, etc will normally put a helmet on for riding skatepark, so they probobly know what they're doing? Chad has the brains to help develop his signature frame so I guess he knows when he needs a helmet or not. For simple session you do not need to wear a helmet and both chad and Bruno were wearing em.

Plus if you know of Dennis enarson he is boss at both street and park, occasionally wears a helmet for street but will always have one on in the skwtepe

Bafus- Several points on this video. First of all- it's beautiful. Way to create something that's different and mellow, but still full of good, technical riding. Anyone complaining about lame tricks and too much slow mo can just go to pretty much any other video on the web and have your share of shitty dubstep and corner-roosting. This clearly wasn't created for you. So - Well shot, well edited, well ridden - slow clap for that. BUT... As someone who has seen very closely first hand what a life-altering TBI looks like, I, too, am disappointed in the lack of lid in the majority of these shots. I don't care if you can evaluate your safety risk. I've seen you smack yourself utterly senseless with a helmet on and had you not worn it, you probably wouldn't have been able to make this video. And as much as I love the KonaDog hat, it's not going to help you if you snag a ledge while trying to gap it. You are someone that aspiring riders look up to. You are one of the most fun guys and hardest workers I've dealt with. As part of your role as a pro rider, I would hope that you would help send a better message about helmets. I realize it's not required. I realize it's not always the most comfortable thing to do. I realize that skidding in leaves shouldn't require you to wear a helmet, and I also realize that you have awesome party hair! But, for things where there is a genuine risk, I would hope that you would hold your brain in higher regard.

Ahhhh, what an altruist you are. Looking out for your fellow man like that. Why not go one step further (maybe it's more than one step?) & just say that he shouldn't even ride because it's too dangerous? He could die even with a helmet.

You really think he doesn't know it's possible to Stephen Murray himself without actually riding like Stephen Murray? I could come on here & tell everyone to stay in their homes because the world is a dangerous place!!!! Don't go to work or anywhere because you might get hit with a jumbo jet or blown up with a car bomb!!!!! Build a rubber room, bury it in a hole & f*cking stay in it!!!! Don't even look outside because the UV will damage your eyes!!! You know what? Just kill yourselves!!!! Yeah yeah yeah do that because then & only then do you completely eliminate all risk of injury or death. It's the safest way.

You ride how you wanna ride & all of us will ride how we wanna ride. Not wearing a helmet is f*cking stupid, but so is complaining about someone else not wearing one. Sometimes I wear my helmet (almost always), sometimes I wear my seat belt (almost never). It's my call. Not yours. I evaluate risks myself & make my own decision. So does Bafus, so do you & so does everyone. Everything in this video without a helmet was not nearly as dangerous as Rheeder & Semenuk at X or Zink & McGarry at Rampage or D-Mac any time he's on his bike, no matter how much protection they're wearing. The level of protection does not rise proportionally with the things that action sports athletes do & I doubt any of you whiners here on Zinkbike are telling Cam that he shouldn't have flipped that Oakley advert because no helmet could save him from that if it went as bad as it could go.

You're not wrong, and I always wear a helmet, but I would offer a different perspective. Art. Look at Figure Skating, it has a very high risk for head trauma. Children and beginners are strongly encouraged to wear helmets, but at advanced levels the helmet wearing disappears. The point of Figure Skating is to create art in form and motion. Part of it is the execution of technical stunts, the part that Tanya Harding was maybe too focused on, and I'm sure some Pro skaters wear helmets when practicing, but when it comes time for the show, the art is displayed sans helmet. Whether or not what a person does is art is subjective. Double backflips and triple tailwhips impress me, and I enjoy watching contests and seeing people going huge, but rarely am I moved emotionally by pure stunt riding. What I enjoy more is seeing someone express themselves through a moment of perfect form with their bicycle. Seeing a slow nose dive 360 or a clicked tabletop is what I really appreciate. If a professional is putting their work on display I think it is their artistic freedom to choose when to wear a helmet.
  • 9 1
There are many ways to ride a bike. For one rider a bike can be like a fine paintbrush, for another it's jackhammer. Watching Crankworx, helmets look totally in place. On a flatland freestyler, a helmet looks ridiculous and distracting. Projecting your idea onto every adult that rides a bicycle that they are a role model for kids is unfair and lazy. Look at Holland. The bicycle is as natural there as walking. Telling a Dutch person to wear a helmet because they are a role model for other peoples children would be as silly as telling a ballet dancer to wear one. Parents and guardians are the role models for their own children, not everyone else.

Since riding a bike without a helmet is illegal if you're under 18 in an increasing number of states and countries, I think kids are growing up wearing helmets as a natural part of riding a bike, and with proper parenting, will be less likely to take them off in the future. I'm all for saying "Wear your helmets kids.", but I don't think it's my place to tell an adult how to create his art.
  • 5 2
@mecabeat Do you really think wearing a helmet takes away from the art?
  • 4 1
@lacykemp It really depends on the specific thing that I'm looking at. Look at these Shaolin Monks 4.bp.blogspot.com/_q5xdMJjMMOg/TH-r-e1pVBI/AAAAAAAAABo/C42ood4ya0A/S760/shaolin-kung-fu-kicks.jpg

A moment of perfect form captured in a photo. Imagine them wearing plastic helmets. For me it would definitely take away from the beauty of that moment. That moment that years of dedication and practice had led up to.

Everyone has a unique perspective. When some people look at that photo of Bafus doing a tabletop, they see a person doing stunts on a bike. I see a Shaolin Monk www.iampleasant.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Shaolin-Kung-Fu.jpg
  • 1 2
Busting out the Shaolin Monks! That's a card I'd rarely play, but I respect your opinion as much as the monks themselves. To each their own. Bafus knows he should probably have worn a helmet in this video, but he opted not to. Maybe it was for the art. Maybe it was for the hair. Maybe he was super confident. Whatever the reason, we can't do much but offer up opinions.

did wearing a helmet take away from the art here?

ep1.pinkbike.org/p4pb10650898/p4pb10650898.jpg

I guess Brett is some kind of a pussy wearing a helmet and a mouth guard or something. You people that don't see Lacy's point of view for what it's worth are fools.
  • 1 1
I think that u all should care less about what your kids or other ones will think about stuff like that, they are not dogs or stupid, they are just kids, they can think about their own shit (if not, ur kid fits in the 2 options i said before). And i have a theory that the more protection u wear more regardless u become about ur safety when riding, i've been riding since i can remember without any protection in a very similar style and city (obviously not like that), and never broke or crack anything. He's doing what he loves and that should be inspiration enough for any kid watching!
  • 1 1
@csermonet I never said wearing a helmet takes away from the art. I said it's not my place to tell other adults what to do. I also started off by agreeing with Lacy, but adding another viewpoint.

Your lack of reading comprehension is the only thing that's foolish here.

explain to me what I missed? If I recall correctly, you said that wearing a helmet would definitely take away from the beauty of that moment. Maybe I am just seeing things, I did eat alot of shrooms earlier today...err was that yesterday? I don't know.
  • 1 0
Yea, you missed something. I was talking about the kung fu photo. Maybe you can't see the link? Maybe you didn't read my posts above that one to get the context?

I was using kung fu as an example of my perspective on riding a bike. For me, the form and style used to achieve a goal is just as important as the goal itself.

A fun exercise to see this for yourself is to look at photos of riders doing simple, but stylish tricks like tabletops or turndowns, and imagine them without the bike. Some look like they are in a perfect kung fu or yoga position, while others goofy and awkward.

I'm just pointing out that there are different perspectives. Things aren't black and white.

I always wear a helmet when I ride, and I recommend that everyone else wear a helmet when they ride as well, but I'm not going to try to guilt someone into wearing one by projecting some role model ideals onto them.
  • 24 9
Continuously disappointed in sponsors who allow and endorse pro riders that do not wear helmets. These guys are setting the tone and the example to my kid and other kids. My kid is fantastic about wearing his helmet but what about others that don't have a constant nagging father to make sure they have a lid. They will follow suit. I guarantee it.

nothing in this video was gnarly enough to warrant a helmet, get over it
  • 7 4
 @Enduro27

It's not about whether anything is gnarly enough or not. It's not about whether he needs a helmet with his obvious skills-o-plenty.
The point is: It's on video. On the interwebs. Where kids will watch it. And try to replicate it. But without his skills. And without any sense of their limits.

So, this coming from a country where NOBODY wears a helmet on their daily ride back form the store, packed with groceries, using their mobile phone etc. And from somebody who does not wear a helmet in normal everyday traffic either: When you're out doing stunts or going fast (especially when you're making videos and releasing these videos on the internet): Have an effin' sense of responsibility. It's not just you with your uber-skills using the space. Other traffic does not expect you to be twice as fast as a normal cyclist. Other traffic does not expect you to fly off a wall and land just in front of their bumper. Other traffic does not expect you to jump over a railing suddenly appear on their side of the fence.
  • 14 6
If a kid actually rides without a helmet because he thought it was cool from a video and messes himself up than that is a prime example of how natural selection works, that kids parents should have raised him not to be so impressionable and to have some common sense, if a kid is old enough to be on the internet watching videos, he should have enough judgment to realize he should wear a helmet
  • 8 1
It's your damn fault what your kid does and sees. That's like complaining about musicians talking about drugs because kids will listen to them. I'm a kid and choose to always wear a helmet no matter what I'm riding
  • 2 4
Yes, Enduro27 I'm sure that saying "It's your fault" will really help the parents when they're standing next to a hospital bed with their kid in it. In fact I'm told nurses and doctors are now trained to pile as much blame on the parents as they possibly can. You now; to help parents and child process the accident and any consequences
  • 1 2
 nice fallacy m8
  • 5 0
BMX allow riders to COMPETE without helmets. Same with skating. Riding street is different than riding slopestyle. I am not saying you cannot permanently mess yourself up, but the chances are different. There is a proclaimer in this video that says in bold not to attempt what Steven does without a helmet. Your kid watching this should be able to read that and I hope that you as a parent make it clear to your own kid that helmets ARE necessary. Now with that said, enjoy the edit!
  • 5 5
ComingUpShort, tough shit. Quit f*cking bellyaching. What about those other kids? If they have brains worth protecting, they'll make the right decision. Your kids are not this guy's problem & neither are anyone else's. You sound like one of those f*cking douchebags that blame the world for every way that you've f*cked yourself & would try to sue anyone & anything for "compensation". Everyone knows where their comfort levels are so shove it up your ass. You shoulda seen how many dudes weren't wearing helmets at Simple Session this year, throwin' down way gnarlier shit than this & that's in a big BMX comp. f*ck off.

bike-3883 same to you. Stop telling the rest of the f*cking world what to do, you a*shole. You're damn right the doctors (& everyone else) should pile ALL of the f*cking blame on the parents. The parents are the ones responsible. You want the kid, YOU look after it! It is not the world's responsibility to look after someone's kid. If your kid beats up another kid, YOU are held responsible. If your kid steals from a store, YOU are held responsible. If your kid is such a dumb little retard that they don't know enough to wear a helmet while doing dangerous things, then like Enduro27 said, there's either some genetic disadvantage there (got the f*cketard gene) &/or there's something wrong with the environment that YOU are providing for your kid. Comforting stupid parents for being stupid might be something that you worry about, but the rest of us have riding to do. Riding our own way, however the f*ck we see fit. Pro or not.

everything looks chilled out in slow mo. putting it in slow mo and calling it chill is a bad excuse for a bad video.

We associate riding to the library with needing protective gear that race car drivers wear in 1,500lbs (F1) vehicles traveling at 180 mph. I'm a father and my kid bikes and skates he digs them both and is in good shape. He knows to adapt his level of safety to the situation and equips accordingly. Educating your child on the appropriate time to utilize what gear is a parents job. Adults that make blanket statements about always wearing a helmet because they are to lazy parent wind up scaring their child out doing anything physical. At 3:41 on the big stair set he had helmet great and then when he was skidding in leaves and bunny hopping no helmet perfectly reasonable to me.
  • 12 6
I was once out drinking with a few friends when I was assaulted, knocked out, went to the ground and the back of my head hit a kerb leaving me completely deaf in one ear. Are you saying that I should have known and adapted and worn a helmet and knee pads?! The idea of protection is to prevent shit like this happening. I certainly won't be telling my kids to where a helmet only when they feel is necessary or "only wear a seatbelt when you're driving over 60, or when you think you might crash"
  • 9 1
yeah you should have had a helmet on, you should probably sleep with one on too
  • 3 0
I don't mean to sound unsympathetic, but are you implying that if you would have been wearing a helmet while out drinking with friends, then you would still have your hearing? I agree with xi11um, there are different levels of protection that are appropriate for different situations. I have crashed on my road bike, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to throw on my DH armour next time I go out for a road ride, just like you're probably not going to throw on a helmet next time you go out drinking...
  • 1 5
flag transitory (Feb 26, 2014 at 8:17) (Below Threshold)
I'm sure if I wore a helmet out drinking then I'd have a much worse time and there wouldn't have been any friends of mine there. All I'm saying is that assuming there is no danger and wearing no protection is like assuming unprotected sex is definitely safe just because she's not a hooker. Any decision I make about my own protection is my responsibility, but telling my kids to judge whether they should suit up if they feel like it seems really stupid.
  • 5 0
I think wearing a lid when riding makes sense. Adjust between XC vented, hard shell, or full face depending on the riding you're doing, but always wear one. Accidents can happen at any time, cut a sidewall and your tube blows out the side of your front tire you will be glad you had some sort of helmet on.
  • 2 0
To clarify you were assaulted and knocked out if you had a helmet on you still would have beaten to the point of being knocked out because that was the goal presumably of assaulting you. I have never been to England but most people don't assault somebody to give them a massage and relieve their stress. Unless this is some sort of cultural thing that us Seppos don't get like hot tea and blood pudding (I just threw up in my mouth a little bit). Now back to parenting and paying atttention to your children. At 6 my son was not allowed to go the dirt jump trail by himself and when we went he padded up because is made him. He was allowed to ride his friends house or school sans pads though. Now at 12 he goes to the dirt jump trails by himself and wears his pads because if I show up or my friends show up and he isn't padded up he looses the privelage of going to the trails by himself. Now if we go ride technical wet root stewn trails with rock gardens I take him and he suits up and when he can drive to the there in a few years he will too, if not he looses the privelage. See how that works? Cantankerous roadies kitted out in the latest weasel squeezers don't need to yell at him to put on a helmet as he cruises to the 7-11 for a new comic book. The children of the wailing roadies don't ride bikes because their parents are militant nutters that have scared their children into doing nothing.
  • 2 0
Ok see I generally agree and I'm the same I don't always wear a helmet if I'm just cruising but, in the context of this vid, my point is that it's better to be safe than sorry - brain is a very fragile thing. I'm not questioning your parenting and sounds like you got it covered anyway, but PB's policy for VOD's is no helmet, no VOD, so why not the same policy for the promoted videos? and no one likes roadies except roadies and hipsters

I've ridden a bit with Bafus when he lived in the IE just before he went RAD he's a cool kid. I enjoyed the vid it reminded me of my old school days. I wouldn't have wore a helmet for this particular vid either. I was doing these types of tricks on a 20" when I was 17 (not a diss) and never wore a helmet then or on dirtys and still don't it just happens to be the way I evaluate risk. People do have a point about being a role model. But either way helmets r a personal choice and others shouldn't be so opinionated or should just keep them to themselves ride for u not others!
Congrats on ur success dude!
