Give it six months and you will all have stopped worrying about the old Commencal and Blue. It's good to keep things fresh and will hopefully be a great new motivation for all of them after last years fairly lack-lustre season (by their standards). I say good luck to them and the new team including marc this season!

The ONE helmet looks ridiculous being so big. So does danny hart's fox helmet.

isnt gee wearing a fox v3r??
  • 14 3
1 industries owns 661 soo the are running 661 protection and one gear
  • 11 1
I was only just getting used to him in a D3. Not a fan of these big moto-looking lids. Also this gear is only practice kit, race kit will be different.
  • 10 1
one industries gamma helmet... not 661
  • 1 0
Pretty sure Dan is holding the 661 dh helmet there
  • 6 0
Gee is wearing a One Ind. helmet Dan is holding a 661 evo carbon

why did i get neg propped Frown

Can't say I care about who has got what kit, but I do think it's going to be weird if Gee isn't rocking 661 pads
  • 8 1
I personally think that i will have a problem recognizing the athertons on the new gt bikes and one industries kit as im soo used to the commencal and animal kit & bike combo, But in all fairness, Good luck to them and their new team mate marc, Cant wait to see them race! Bring on Round 1! Smile

I take it dan will be focusing on enduros this year then

GT fury looks shitty. A heavy single pivot fiber carbon brick...
  • 1 0
i thought they had TLD helmets towards the end of last year?
  • 14 0
Ask Australian DHer John Waddell what he thinks of moto helmets. If memory serves me correctly, the Santa Cruz team manager had insisted that all the riders wear moto helmets, not MTB helmets. When John had a terrible crash in 2003, that moto helmet meant John ended up in a coma instead of the cemetary. John still shreds to this day.
  • 6 4
he gave up wearing a troy lee designs helmet for that thing?
lets hope his season goes better than his sponsor choice.
good luck.
  • 7 3
Big helmets may not look cool, but concussions suck way worse. Good on him and the others for stepping up to an MX lid from a bicycle helmet. I've got an MX lid, and it is heavier than the Troy Lee it replaced, but the extra protection is well worth it.
  • 4 0
The day I start worrying about what other people are wearing biking is the day I stop caring about biking... and is that really Stacy Kohut posting above me? Legendary...
  • 4 3
I switched over to a Moto helmet after I got a concussion in a MTB helmet and I'll never go back. I got the Shoei VFX-W and it's the tits. A decent Moto helmet won't weigh a ton either, and will come in handy one day. Moto helmets are worth it if you know what to look for.
  • 6 0
Moto lids are designed to provide protection through crumpling at specific forces (breaking so you don't, like bike lids), which youre not really able to generate on a push bike. All you are going to do is cause even greater concussion, brain rattle and possibly permanent damage as the helmet will remain completely rigid on mtb impacts. There is a plethora of evidence to back this up, Dirt magazine did a report on it a couple of years ago. Fact is, if you're not doing moto and you wear a moto lid you're not protecting yourself properly. Get a decent bike fullface and do yourself a favour.

MX lids do not prevent concussions but in fact make head injuries and neck injuries (due to their weight) more likely and much worse.
  • 1 4
That argument has been had several times and each time its failed.

A moto helmet is simply designed to be able to disperse a greater range of forces. The liner foam is thicker because of this, not harder.

And dont forget these are WC racers and they're usually going somewhat comparable speeds to MX. (a bike is acually faster than an moto down fort bill)
  • 3 0
Wasn't talking about WC racers, was talking about PB users. And yes, precisely. It is designed to disperse those forces and that's exactly why they are more dangerous for mtb. Also it's never failed, it's being increasingly recognised by people who actually know what they're talking about, Nobble.
  • 1 2
@ redrook, I disagree with you. I have not seen any evidence to suggest that an MX helmets generate injuries of the kind you are suggesting. If you can send me some information on such research or discussions, I would be very keen to read. The understanding I have is that MX helmets are thicker due to them having more material to absorb the impact, thus them being designed to take larger blow. As I understand it, for an equivalent impact an MX helmet will transmit a lower peak deceleration to the brain than a bicycle helmet for that reason. Because the MX helmet has more material, it can spread the forces from the impact over a longer period.
  • 2 1
lol redrook, you clearly need to take a look at helmet standards and testing methods then.

Oh wait, this is pinkbike actual knowledge is unnecesary. Carry on spewing your scientifically unfounded misinformation.
  • 2 1
Agreed, it is all about rocking a DOT approved moot helmet. I'd rather know I can walk away from a crash than look good dying!
  • 1 1
If I was wearing my d2 during a crash on the canadian open track at crankworx and not my moto lid I would've been in a coma. I ended up with just a minor concussion and was able to race in the enduro at the end of the week.
  • 1 0
Dunno about the concussion risk or whatever, but it is true that mx lids have that rigidity in the chin area that really increases risk of neck injury. Maybe mx lid for DH if you also wear a neckbrace. You can't speculate on what could have happened, that does not make a convincing argument jessman.
Nobble, care to provide anything to back yourself up there? Oh wait this is pinkbike!
  • 1 0
 NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
  • 38 7
They'll always be known for the Atherton blue. Grey does not suit them..
  • 21 6
you say that now, but what about people who are just getting into riding and will know them for the grey?

it's all relative, I saw an old pic from like 2007 where Gee was wearing yellow.

To be honest, I think they were due for a change. Gee has had a couple of "average" (for a top WC rider) seasons these past few years.
  • 9 0
They haven't revealed the new bike colour either, I think its only white while they are testing.
  • 20 1
What, average being him winning the world cup series two seasons ago?
  • 1 0
I hope they change that kit, i'm not feeling the grey, still looks sexy on gee though Wink
  • 2 1
Good to see the bigger motocross companies getting into MTB as well
  • 1 0
The bikes and kits are just standard colours at the moment, however when WC season comes around you will see them on custom painted bikes and custom kit. The reason fro not having fully custom bike grapics and kit is because 1) they have only just signed for these sponsors and, 2) because they probably havent confirmed all of their sponsors for 2012 yet.
  • 20 1
What's all the fuss about? Jeez... Some of you guys are sounding like girls criticizing other women's outfits at a club or something Razz My guess is they gave em something to wear till the team graphics are fully done (it is a ''practice'' kit after all and heck, it probably already bumped up sales) and then they can unveil both the kit and the complete bike in one fell swoop. Basically just giving people something to chew on for starters...
  • 3 0
 Talking sense right here.
  • 3 0
Amen, I can't believe people care so much!! I do think it's a bit sad that people are saying stuff like 'Gee doesn't suit grey'- WTF!! Does it not flatter his skin tone? Does it not bring out his eyes? Get a grip!!!
  • 19 2
Everyone rants about how the old commencal/animal stuff looked cooler.

for f*ck sake, the past is past, let it go. Focus on the riders not what they're wearing.
  • 7 1
Jesus Christ what a pointless post, who cares what they are going to wear, will it make Gee Atherton faster? No. Get out and ride your bike lads and ladies, like Im gonna do right now.
  • 3 0
The Kit animal gave them looked much better , or maybe I was just used to it?
I might come to like it but I dont think it suits them just yet.

But Im glad things arent staying the same this year , shaping up to be an exciting season.

Actually , I just looked at it again , and I might but the kit if it is available to the public , looks shweet.
  • 7 3
I like the athertons in all but tbh they looked much better with the commencal kit this new stuff just doesnt go well. especially with gee's redbull helmet
  • 6 0
its a practice kit not a race kit
  • 1 0
@bigpizzaguy it wasnt a commencal kit it was an animal kit i think this is good idea afterall thay were in the same kit every race atleast this time thay might have a different kit every race
  • 6 2
 looks like mx gear,not good
  • 3 5
DH gear pretty much IS mx gear...
  • 1 0
i really do mean its the same design all round as an mx jersey i,ve seen and that kind of style(to me) doesnt go well with a dh bike

 fair enough.

i love the LA smog hang'n in the background behind Dan. HAHAHA! But I sure do miss those trails. Anyways, back to topic, hmmmm i dunno about that grey, but cool to see a Moto co. sponsoring MTB!

 that picture is Vancouver...
  • 4 2
uh....nope....nope not at all actually. That's definitely SoCal. Yah so uh, sorry about that.
  • 1 1
They aren't in LA, they are actually in either The OC, or San Diego County. But yeah, the geographically challenged just always refer to everything as "LA." That being said, it's actually a pretty clear day for SoCal weather (sadly).
  • 1 2
cant tell if trolling or just stupid..
  • 1 0
my bad, but i dont live over that way and the pic says in vancouver so thats what i went on
  • 1 0
those picture were taken in orange county, not LA or san diego
  • 1 0
That picture was taken at top of the world in Laguna if you want to be very precise...
  • 1 0
yup kinda figured since they ride there every winter it seems. but it's close enough to LA and that smog is def from LA!!!! But leave it to the local guys to be picky about Simi Valley, San Fernando, Orange Co., Agora, Laguna, Hunnington, bla bla diddy bla bla.... it's just one big @$$ city if you ask me.
  • 1 0
so basically your saying all of southern california is one city...
  • 2 1
 yeah why not
  • 4 0
Where does Marc fit into all this?
  • 1 0
Mark will ride with Gee in the DH, and assist Dan in Enduro events. Thats what GT said anyway....
Most people are right, they probably wont look as flashy in their new kit (assuming the grey kit in the pic above is their race kit, as it might not be) , but there are plenty of other riders in plain kit who ride well, nobody says anything abt them. Maybe we will all get used to it but only time will tell
  • 1 0
what is rachel doing in all this is she still doing DH yeah ?
  • 1 0
Yeah Rachel will still be competing in DH events as long as there's no injury problems. Smile

IT SAYS PRACTICE KIT IN THE CAPTION
  • 1 0
I did notice after I had typed, bit to late. Thanx for pointing it out tho Smile Have they released any pics of the actual race kit yet do you know?
  • 3 1
I know it's only the practice kit.. but that helmet looks so ridiculous..! The D3 looked amazing in Red Bull Livery.. he just looks like a bobble head now..
  • 1 1
By the time South Africa rolls up Gee will be in a D3, Dan probably will be at his first enduro too. They're the atherton brothers, they can wear what they want. Rachel will probably still be rocking the 661 Evo. But Marc.. dont know, tough one to call, probably the MX helmet.
  • 1 0
Not that im hugely bothered, but they can't 'wear what they want', or there would be no point in sponsors
  • 1 0
i dunno about everyone else but maybe the athertons dont want to go around wearing what looks like a cotton candy stand or colors like most gear these days the plain jerseys look dope
  • 3 0
Stoked for the Athertons & Mark.B. Fresh and new!
