'Ride Giant. Ride Whistler' Video Contest Finalists!

Jun 27, 2012
by Giant Bicycles
How amazing is this collection of videos for the “Ride Giant. Ride Whistler” contest?

A month ago we asked Pinkbike.com readers to show us the people, places and things that inspire you to ride—and, wow, did you deliver. More than 150 awesome videos, incredible!

Today we begin the process of selecting our winner. Every video here is worthy in its own right, but take a spin through all of them and you start to get an idea of the ones that resonated the most. These are the truly special works, the elite group that will make the cut and be named finalists in our contest.

Each of the finalists is now in the running for the grand prize. Over the next week our guest judges - Giant rider Jeff Lenosky and filmmaker Clay Porter - will review the top-20 and choose the winner.

As a reminder, here’s what’s at stake: a brand new Giant Glory frame plus a free trip for two to Whistler for the world-famous Crankworx event. Giant is covering airfare, accommodations, lift tickets and free Giant bikes to ride at the most amazing bike park on the planet.

Plus the winner will get to hang with the Giant Factory Off-Road Team and enjoy full-on VIP status at some super-fun Crankworx events and parties.

To everyone who took the time and effort to create a video, and to show us what motivates your “Ride Life,” we send a huge thanks. You showed us that it’s a big world with a ton of amazing places to ride—and endless reasons to get out and do it.

And for the top-20 finalists listed here, best of luck! Be sure to check back next week, July 3, when we’ll announce the winner.

Stay tuned to Pinkbike for more contest updates in the coming weeks. View all the video entries here.

Alex's Recovery Ride Giant Ride Whistler: Two months ago, Alex, a dear friend, was riding around with some buddies testing some of his new features. Alex was hitting a 25’ kicker and got the speed right on the in-run but leant too far forward upon hitting the lip. From what friends have told me, he took one of the mightiest digs anyone's seen. I wasn’t available during the session and couldn’t video it. Enjoy the video! Rest up Alex!

Ride Giant. Ride Whistler. "Ladies Do It Best" People say they mountain bike for many different reasons. A few even ride for love of the sport. I mountain bike for myself. I ride because when I'm in the saddle, the world drops away & I find my rhythm. I ride because sometimes, the only thing that makes sense in the world is the connection of rubber to dirt & rock. I ride to find my truth, to find myself and to find peace. I ride for me.

everyone one of the finalist here have a brand new sick ass bike except for filipe... good on you lot for being stoked to ride and sharing the passion but i mean.... cmon, this whole contest is about giving to someone in need and deserving of a ride and the opportunity to make our holy pilgrimage to our mecca that is whistler. Philipe represents the balls and the passion that was the genesis to the sport we love today. he deserves this more than all of us. this is what i feel is right
  • 91 2
Completely agree,as soon as i seen his entry i knew he was the guy that needed it,buddy pins on that supermarket bike i cant imagine him on a brand new bike, he has to win
  • 58 3
People please vote all on Filipe he deserves to win this contest more than any one else who have entered this contest, other vids are sick and all but none are as commited as him riding his bike.
  • 35 2
I think on a new ride he could smoke a lot of these other riders as well! I sometimes find it sad to see kids go without support who have the potential or already do kill everything (no reference to myself intended).

Not only that, but I can relate to Philipe's video. 3 years ago I started bumbling about on a supermarket bike before taking a year off from riding. I think we all started on one. Now we scoff at anything under 1k deeming it incapable of even jumping off a street curb.
  • 11 1
Yeah man, that transition is the best feeling ever.

The whole; "So THIS is what a bike feels like!"
  • 21 1
I think EVERYONE will agree that Philipe should win. I started riding quite a while back and my dream was to have a downhill bike, was never able to have one and bought a supermarket hardtail meant for "dirt jumping" after pretty much everything on it died i kind of gave up on the idea of downhilling amd bought myself a cheap BMX. Got into more street, park and dirt. Eventually after 4 and a half years, so about 2 months ago, i got my downhill bike. Philipe, he never gave up om the idea ! He wants a downhill bike and still can't have it, and he goes HUGE ! the jumps he broke his bike on was MASSIVE. He shreds a d should definitely be given a bike !
  • 33 0
Such a shame it's only a Giant frame. They could at least let him exchange trip for the whole new bike... how sad he will be back home after amazing journey, with new frame in hand and not able to build it
  • 26 0
I think that's not a problem anymore , because one of the viewers of his video have already created a forum where people can donate their spare parts , in case he wins the Glory frame. And they gave away almost every parts needed to make that Giant frame rock! So "Giant" People, Filipe has got to win !

Where? I have an atlas dm stem to give Pimp
  • 9 0
Supermarket bike shredding. MAHOOSIVE balls and skills. No contest man.
  • 16 0
Filipe shows us that it's 10% bike and 90% rider. I think his video should win. He totally deserves it. Hell, he deserves a whole friggin bike.

I hope to see more about him.
  • 8 0
Let me say first that all the finalists were awesome videos don't get me wrong. But after watching Filipe's video man, I remember riding Canadian Tire bikes when I was smaller. Now I'm lucky enough to have a Devinci Frantik. His video is actually nicely filmed and he's got huggee guts to hit that stuff on that kind of a bike.

This is what I think they should do. Make Filipe the Grand Prize winner winning a full Glory. Then they should take another video etc either Josh Lane or the Luca Lucas experience and give them some other prize.

@Elbs can you link that post? I got some parts that I'd be willing to send to him. Anyone thought of doing a kickstarter promo for him?

The only thing i wondered about his video was how he could afford that good of a camera but not a bike...
  • 3 2
Yeah I thought about that too. It could be his friends camera or it could be his and has no money for a bike. Generally if you're buying a good quality camera you won't have much left for a bike.
  • 3 23
flag Nobble (Jun 27, 2012 at 9:19) (Below Threshold)
He makes a big deal about how important mountain biiking is to him, but if it is so important then why would he buy a camera instead of a bike? (assuming its his camera not somebody elses)
  • 3 2
 It is someone elses.
  • 10 5
I'm not saying Flip shouldn't win but anyone think about the the people who filmed and edited theses videos. You don't know what kind of bike they ride or their situation. People keep complaining about the riders in the videos with their new DH bikes don't deserve to win. The riders are just the talent. The filmmakers deserve the prize for their hard work and creative editing. If flip doesn't win I bet the glory frame will not go to the rider in the video but to the guy who actually made the video. Supermarket guy has an amazing story and deserves a Proper DH bike without a doubt, but the public outcry for Flip might push the judges decisions in the opposite direction. If by some chance he doesn't win you will all through a fit. To the guy who made the Goomba video that shit was funny as hell, I bet nobody thought they would see a video like that in a biking video contest.
  • 4 1
I want to believe that he can shred like that with only ever having ridden a super market bike, but I wonder if he is just a skilled rider with a good bike and an idea for a story to win the trip and frame. If that is the case, he still deserves to win, for being creative enough to entertain us with his story. So either way lets vote for Filipe.
  • 7 2
Nobble, judging from his video, camera is not good at all, not even a dslr, every descent photo camera now has a hd format and they come cheap on a store, not even close to a dh bike price range, so that's not a good comparsion. That 16 years old dude has a Canon 550d with three lenses, rides specialized demo, wears tld kit and poc protection. Take this all away and Filipes video starts to stand out. Don't tell me money doesn't help you to make good video, you can't get slow mo shots with your mobile phone. And i believe this is not VOD contest, like it was before - pro film makers with high end gear. Leave this for a story, people, places, life, so everyone should have a chance.
  • 1 0
It says in the discription that it was filmed by someone else.
  • 2 3
That dosent mean it's their camera... I've filmed stuff for friends and used their camera.
  • 1 0
yeah, i filmed with a panasonic lumix s1, and rode my schwinn www.pinkbike.com/video/262634
  • 2 1
Filipe all the way. I mean if you can afford a 6000$ demo, then im pretty sure u can afford a trip to whisltler....
  • 1 0
 Filipe for the win!
  • 1 0
another thing too look at the faves the second most is over 200 philipes is almost at 1000 why would it matter what camera it was shot on its not like it affects his story or the meaning of riding your bike.
  • 2 4
I'm going to play the devils advocate here and point out that the camera it's filmed on could raise questions about the validity of his "i'm a poor boy from a poor family" story if it's his camera. Theoretically, if he can afford a camera the. He could afford a decent bike, such as an older ironhorse or kona.
  • 3 1
Instead of questioning his credability in the contest,if yall are so concerned why not ask him? Hes got a pinkbike account you know and it seems the only logical way to debunk whether hes faking or not...idk just spit ballin ideas here....
  • 1 0
 exactly
  • 2 3
At no point in the contest description does it say it's about giving to someone in need. This contest is not a charity, it is a video contest. "Create the best video, and you win the big prize."
  • 40 1
 supermarket guy should win
  • 7 2
 Yeah! I think so too
  • 2 1
 filipe has my vote!
  • 40 4
Oh giant, you so silly! I almost thought you didn't put the supermarket guy in this contest! I was quite glad when I saw him down there
  • 15 18
Glad they did otherwise id loose all respect for pinkbike
  • 30 1
SUPERMARKET BIKE guy deserves a new bike. I know all of you all worked really hard, but look at your bikes all Demos `n stuff and look at his bike..

Great riding from all of you, especially Kurt Shimada! But still, Supermarket bike dude..... NEEDS.........THIS..............BIKE!
  • 7 4
why would you lose respect fo pinkbike? its not their contest.
  • 6 10
flag robc10 (Jun 27, 2012 at 4:22) (Below Threshold)
Why would i loose respect... That guy clearly needs the frame and parts MORE than anyone who entered, he has nothing now due to his frame snapping.. How is it not pinkbikes contest ? clearly is, theyre posting this on behalf of whistler
  • 4 2
If it was pinkbikes contest. It would probably have their name in it. Pinkbike is allowed to support some things without sponsoring them. Its like you saying you ran for cancer and then saying you were a huge contributor for this event happening.
  • 4 5
What the actual, cant you read..Quote ''A month ago we asked Pinkbike.com readers to show us the people, places and things that inspire you to ride—and, wow, did you deliver. More than 150 awesome videos, incredible!
'' Thats a quote to PINKBIKE on BEHALF... You have neg propped my comment supporting a person who has nothing who clearly loves the sport.. Community of pinkbike once again showing how bad it is now !
  • 2 1
The contest is giant and whistler bike park's pinkbike job was to host the videos not run the entire contest the judging was and the rules were decided by the organizers of the contest NOT pinkbike. What your saying is similar to saying youd hate YouTube because you watched a bad video on it.
  • 2 3
Dude shutup, it was 2 days ago..
  • 28 1
Supermarket better get hooked the fuck up. He is the definition of the contest.
  • 19 1
Judging this is tricky, cuz there are so many good edits, and then u got the supermarket bike. Yes he does deserve a new bike, but there are some really good edits that have been made through alot more work. I think he should get a new bike, but not necesarly win. Neg props comming
  • 11 2
agreed, kinda annoying when you have to work hard on your own to afford a downhill bike to make a regular video while other prefer to make a video about their supermarket bike. I think that 80% of us mountain bikers started with some shit bike and then work they way to some better ride. Yeah yeah bring on the neg props...
  • 19 1
most of the entrants already have top end DH bikes there just not Giants this is why the supermarket man should win
  • 5 0
a lot of the filmers are getting the bikes. Filmers are riders too!
  • 1 2
^ Haha, although I agree with you I still think, including a lotta people on this site, that Philipe deserves the bike more than the filmers. He did blow up his bike and risked his health for this edit. And that was after showing as much style and skills as those with very impressive rigs which I think also makes his video the most inspirational. He proves you don't need 4+ grand to drop on a high-end bike to shred.
  • 2 1
I'm pretty sure every rider risked their health for their video entry. Some fell harder than the supermarket fall, though they still have a bike to ride. He rides well but let's not get biased on emotion. Everyone gave it their all.
  • 1 1
^ The point of the contest was to judge the videos based off their ability to inspire you to ride, or to show you what inspires them. It's hard to be inspired by a kid that's hooked up with a kit you'll never get when you have a video next to it about a kid who got a cheap-ass bike and rips it almost as hard as that kid with that hooked up kit... and in that video there's a kid riding around because he was inspired by his ripping. Plus you don't see an edit like that very often which makes it even better.
  • 16 1
Giant, or any other bike co., go classy and give Filipe a new ride now - I can't believe it hasn't happened already. The good will and publicity you will get here on PB is worth way more than the sponsorship of any one race and will cost you way less than even the sponsorship of a local race. Where is the product manager on this? He/she should be knocking down walls to make this happen!

This contest has nothing to do with it. Sure, lots of people deserve new rides, but lots of people haven't created their own cheering section as Filipe has done. It is very rare for the right thing to be the popular thing as this is. Send it! Make a commercial! Please the boss! Please the community!

 Supermarket bike FTW!!!!!!!!!!
  • 18 1
super market guy for the win for sure
  • 15 1
Super Market Guy deserves to win and more. He should also win free groceries for life.
  • 1 1
So the video contest is now welfare?
  • 9 1
The supermarket guy nearly prove me wrong that "supermarket bike only fit on market ride"...until he crashed. He deserves to win!
  • 7 1
I saved for 3 years to buy my DH bike. I rode a Cowan hardtail singlespeed everywhere to save money. Stop baggin on me and the other contestants for buying a DH bike and making a fun video. I bought a bike instead of a car and piled up student loans in college. Just because others have a "nice" bike doesn't mean they shouldn't win. Besides that, my video guy has a piece of shit and could use a good frame. It's annoying that people are complaining about others having "nice" bikes. And Im not saying in anyway that Filipe shouldn't win, everyone has an equal chance and all these edits are good.
  • 7 2
Filipe has to win this Competition. Looking through the other 19 finalists all of them have top end bikes DEMO, GLORY ETC. Even the lad with the broken back I feel the pain he must have endured but even he has a DEMO. So there is only one true winner that is Filipe, he rides fast and hard just like all the other videos but yet he does not already own a top spec bike. He also deserves it showing his passion and commitment to the sport.
  • 6 0
Isn`t about inspiration? there are videos here that just show someone riding his bike without showing any thing about inspirtaion.. i dont get it
  • 4 0
Filipe should win the contest. There are lots of kids, who like Filipe, ride like pros on supermarket bikes. I know a few that have managed to buy used DH bikes now i can't keep up with them down the trails.

If Filipe wins, all of the kids who dream about a proper DH/FR bike will get their hopes high and will keep riding. Thats what really matters.

R.I.P. Supermarket bike.
  • 4 0
I am not being heartless here but this competition is for skills in video editing and filming. The best edit should win, not necessarily the best story. I think the prize should be given to the best edit fair and square but, if I was Giant I would give Filipe a full on sponsorship and send him to Whistler as well as the winning edit's riders. Filipe has serious potential to be doing that on a supermarket bike and him (and his brother and cousin) deserve to have rigs that show their talent. What do you say Giant?
  • 1 0
"A month ago we asked Pinkbike.com readers to show us the people, places and things that inspire you to ride—Bla Bla Bla...."

What could be more inspiring than Felipe's story?
The shot and Edit means nothing without the heart and soul of content....Just sayin'!
Give it to Felipe!

whether he's going to win or not he has already won in our hearts guys! the amount of support everyone showed him is undoubtful. Hopefuly he will assembly a proper bike from all the parts you send him and we will have the pleasure to watch him again in next video! best of luck Filipe
  • 4 0
seriously, this contest isn't about who needs a new frame the most, but it's about tellin' ur story and presenting a inspirational video...and from my point of view the super market guy met this task the best. perhaps there's neither the best action nor there are the best images, but this vid certainly contains passion and made me pause and reflect on the sport i love so much.

i also liked Kurt Shimada's vid and also RG Productions' work and the "The Luca Lucas Experience" ...props to u!
  • 3 0
Filipe Perestrelo should definitely win the competition, his story of the supermarket bike is truly inspirational! All the other competitors already have amazing bikes, except Filipe! And his brother and cousin are trying to be like him and well that shows he is inspirational in Madeira Island and his area aswell as on Pinkbike! Thumbs up buddy, great job! Smile
  • 4 0
It's been my experience that the one with the most public support wont win and nobody will stop talking about Filipe. If he doesn't win then everybody constantly telling the judges how to vote will have jinxed him.
  • 5 0
Supermarkt bike guy !!!!!!!!! All the other guys have super dialed set ups allready. Give him a complete bike so he can carry on with a good bike !
  • 7 0
 Supermarket bike!!!
  • 6 1
i dont care who wins but they should deffinately give the supermarket bike guy a new bike
  • 2 0
I think that the reason Filipe's edit inspires all of us and has such profound impact is that most of us had to make due with crap bikes at one time or another. It's sad to see his bike break because a supermarket bike is better than no bike, but I have a feeling that he's getting hooked up. Other riders may have gone bigger, other edits may have fancier camera work but I think that Filipe got the point across best. Filipe, you just inspired me to go ride, and I think that's the point. Bravo, bud!
  • 3 1
my bike even got teary eyed while watching the video entry of felipe..seriously other than felipe all of the entries has top rigs, not sayin their entry are not as good as felipe's but you can clearly see his story moved most of us. Makin us feel again the first time we saw supermarket bikes were the coolest bike to ride. I respect the decisions of the judges if ever he'll not be picked a the winner but their conscience will not let them sleep..just jokn..hehe..I'm rootin for felipe!

What Filipe is doing is like riding Whistler bike park on a supercycle, and killin' it. Hook that young man up and get him a new bike. That frame snap when about as well as it possibly could have.
  • 1 0
I believe its obvious Fillipe deserves the new frame and the oportunity to get to know whistler more than the other competitors, everyone else have a bike that pass the 3 thousand bugs pricing, but he is still an amazing rider with that super market bike! Go fillipe!
  • 3 0
filipe doesnt deserve a FRAME, the deserves a whole new bike. he also should get a pass to whistler EVERY year. filipe wins for sure
  • 3 0
its all well and good if the supermarket guy does win but wont he need the rest of the parts for a full bike? maybe giant should just give a glory complete
  • 2 0
theres already a forum sending him thousands of dollar worth of parts even if he doesn't win
  • 3 1
Supermarket guy, no doubt that. Don't want to be mean, but the other guys just want to try some another frame. Filipe just wants to have A FRAME! With a decent bike, he will evolute so much.

Man, that Goomba video had me pissing in my pants. That has to be the funniest biking video of the year Smile Good work guys.

Thanks, it was fun brain storming and editing it. Glad it made you laugh!

 Wow! So many great Videos!
They all deserve a bike for sure, but right from the heart...If I wasn't being kept racer poor by my own Son I would buy Felipe a new bike myself. If he doesn't win the trip to Crankworks he surely deserves a new bike...And a few set of skins Smile .
Peace out!

Supermarket bike hands down and in no disrespect to the other riders vids. Who doesn't like a feel good story? And even if he doesn't win this contest Giant should buck up and give the kid a bike... or fire their PR guy.
  • 2 1
This contest was fucked. Its a mess of kids with go pros with a few standout entries. Filipe deserves it obviously but there were a few finals spots that should of gone to other people. I dont want to sound selfish but my rider I filmed broke his fucking collarbone filming for this and then found his Devinci Wilson he worked to get was cracked. If that wasn't enough to even get formally recognized then I am not sure what to do.

I have a feeling that a postman in Portugal will soon have to work like crazy to deliver all these packages to Fillipe.

There are a few entries over the 2:30 limit. While they are good, I'm hoping they aren't in the running for the prize. Most of us followed the rules and had to cut great footage to stay within the given time limit.

Theo Erlangsen has this i hate to say but supermarket bike looks written... the frame cracked so perfectly is looks like it was cut before. Theos video has some weight in this contest! Loving it

Dude trust me. I've personally snapped a frame clean in two. It was hilarious but it is possible.

Would you take that bike off that jump with the tubes pre-cut? No way, not a chance in hell. Silly to even think it unless you are trying to audition for Jackass 4!

Some company with deep pockets has simply got to step up and give Filipe Perestrelo a bike on sheer principle alone. He has my vote.

Supermarket biker for the win. I'll be disappointed if he doesn't. I think just by looking at the views/faves/comments on his video compared to others shows he's the winner.
