Sam Reynolds Injury Update

Jul 13, 2012
by Scott Secco
Sam Reynolds crashed hard on a double flip today, over rotating it and injuring his back during Best Trick at Crankworx Les 2 Alpes. He was whisked straight away to the medical centre.

Word is he has two cracked vertabrae. This is unconfirmed but he was quickly taken from the course, strapped, and packed to be carted off to Grenoble for a scan. Do note he got stopped at the door by the admins who promptly poked a card machine in his face, asking for his credit card before he was allowed to leave. We will keep you updated as and when we get news. In the meantime go find Sam Reynolds on Facebook and wish him all the very best.

Pinkbike wishes you a speedy recovery Sam! You'll be double flipping again in no time.

After a couple of hours of strong wind the organization decided to go for the best trick. The first rider was Messere that opened the game with a flip.. Granieri follow with his 360 inverted.. and 3rd Sam Reynolds at his first ride after the break decided to pull a double flip.. he made it great but the wind was too strong and blow it 3-4 meters too far.. he had a bad bad crash cause he landed almost on the flat.. he was saying he was fine.. but the doctors want to see him in a hospital.. we all hope he s fine.. at that poit the organizer wisely decided to stop everything for the day.

when pros get injured i am sad

First Gracia, now Reynolds! Why do the worst injuries happen to the raddest riders!? Frown
  • 41 1
because they go the biggest, so also fall the hardest
  • 16 1
The only person you dont worry about is lehikoinnen, you know its coming. Every year.
  • 11 1
hart is nursing a shoulder injury too.. manon carpenter is still not racing and to be frank this all sucks!!!!
  • 4 0
It's a real shame for it to happen to him anyway. Such a sick rider and got potential for big things.
  • 19 1
We can't forget about good old, well...young, Brosnan
  • 1 0
Because they are to rad for this planet
  • 5 2
Those superpros never really seem to care about wearing some protection here and there...especially for vertebreas end neck!
  • 9 2
On that subject I've noticed a big drop on DH riders especially not wearing neck braces. I use one, they aren't that intruding and you get used to wearing it. If I was them I would be wearing one.
  • 3 0
And Chubey is injured too... Hope everyone great healing vibes!

i completely agree with glenrockify. i don't wear one just cause i only ride bike park a couple times a year and can't afford one. I've tried them on though and when fitted properly you wouldn't even know there're there. i makes no sense whatsoever that the pros don't wear them, at the speeds they are going its shocking they don't.

It always sucks when a fellow rider goes down but there's no need to jump on the pros-should-wear-every-kind-of-protection bandwagon. They're the most safe when they're riding confidently and that's their choice. Maybe he will after he recovers but if he doesn't, then well you guys just have to trust the professional riders' risk management skills. After all they wouldn't be where they are today if they didn't know how to preform at their best while minimizing the chances of injury. Every rider is different so what doesn't bother you 360ing a double or cruising through a bike park, might bother someone doing a 360 whip or racing at WC speed. Yes everyone does fall but it doesn't help anything by being Captain Hindsight or Mr. I-told-ya-so, especially if you don't know what its like riding at the level that the professional guys do. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that its silly to speculate why certain professional riders don't wear the same protective gear as other riders and if it bothers you that much, you can always ask them yourself while wishing them a speedy and full recovery. Get better Sam!

 Wut happened to gracia?
  • 1 3
 he died?
  • 2 0
 Here you go... www.cyclingnews.com/news/gracia-undergoes-surgery-following-val-di-sole-crash

"In addition to fracturing his pelvis in four places, he also fractured the head of his femur. The Frenchman went down after a rock impacted his front brake cable, and he was unable to slow himself down."

Essentially his front brake failed and the only place he had to go was into a rock garden... Some pretty serious stuff Frown

Gracia is having a super fast recovery apparently! The doctor said it was sort of un-human speed for such a recovery...but we pinkbikers&Co. already new the un-human part, didn't we? Big Grin

asked for a credit card? cheeky scum
  • 7 1
Well, foreigners don't get free medical in any country that we know of.. dude, in the US, even if you are a citizen you get asked for it.. that said, the organizers should have had some kind of insurance, etc.. strange !
  • 24 1
Hurray for the NHS. It might be slow and you might catch MRSA, but it's free! Best wishes to Sam for a speedy recovery!

I dunno my buddy went up to Canada some years back entered a break dancing comp and apparently someone had shattered a bottle on stage and they didn't get it all cleaned up and cut the shit out of his hands...he didn't have to pay anything. Things may have changed though.

A Canadian hospital asked for my bike as collateral along with having to call my parents for a credit before they would give me my ID back. I still owe them thousands of dollars.
  • 9 0
just remember boys. if youre going to crash do it properly.... nhs will fix you for free bikes cost money to replace!!!!
  • 4 1
 Canadian healthcare Big Grin
  • 3 1
You'll be asked for your card in any foreign country. If you don't pay taxes to support it then you don't get the healthcare for "free". I am glad I'm not in the states though, Canadian healthcare is a nice thing to have access to.
  • 1 0
Canadian healthcare is rubbish at getting money from foreigners, unless you are in a super touristy place. One more here or there won't break us Big Grin
  • 2 0
I'm pretty sure it says that the resort administration demanded his credit card (for costs incurred at the event such as lodging and food) NOT for medical costs. It's not the clearest statement, but that's how I interpreted it.
  • 3 0
intrepidbiped I think they meant the hospital asked for his credit card details. I think the message is to get insurance when travelling to a foreign country for any extreme sports activity. If you have a bad injury & need to get airlifted it's gonna cost thousands whereas most insurance poilicies are around £20 ($30 USD).
Every British person moans about our National Health Service but it is free (albeit paid for by our taxes) and medical emergencies are dealt with immediatly for British or Foreigeners for FREE!

Best wishes to Sam for a speedy recovery.

NZ has ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) so, if your injury is caused by an accident you get free medical care. Woo Hoo for NZ!!
