I know what you're meaning, but I dunno if calling Graves an enduro guy's really giving him the credit he's due, he's been on the World cup DH circuit for ages, waaay before he started Enduro-ing.
Not sure where you've been Mr Kony, I understand you might have been a bit busy last year with that big movie you did, but i haven't heard anyone say brostep in about 3 years. Also the music in this was in no way 'brostep'.
It's pretty cool to see people who are riding the 29'er shorter travel rigs, pretty much shows how the industry and sport is evolving. I honestly don't mind if they ride short travel bikes BUT it is the downhill World Cup so you'd think logically that the track would be only rideable on a full on DH rig. I guess it's always good to through in a smooth and more pedallly track to test the riders ability. Nonetheless I'm absolutely stoked to watch this finals this weekend!
Agreed. Officials will have to start either laying down specific guidelines so everyone rides same genre of bike or design tracks that enduro bikes couldn't possibly ride down..
It's not the bike that makes it a downhill race, it's the fact that you race a bike downhill that makes it a downhill race. This is just another step in the evolution of riders, courses and bikes.
@joseph-kony that track was by alt J, they dont produce "brostep" as you put it. stop having an opinion on music when you're a fool. That was by far and large the best non race day race video iv ever seen. Graves knows his shit fairplay
I'm a big fan of Gravesy and Smiffy. Top blokes, good interviews. I know everyone bags this track out, but I think it's the track on the world calendar that I'd have the most fun riding. Not too scary, smooth and flowy, big jumps but easy landings. Love it. Greg for the win. Home crowd, digging deep, it will be hard to beat him. But then look at Jared's legs. He should have put a power meter on is bike and sat next to Gee to download his data... that would be a mother of a pshychout at this race. Gee's head would be in pieces after he saw the graph for Jared doing a Mark Cavendish and banging out 1500w of power for the last minute.
I'm all for change and progression of our sport what governs your technical aspects is based on style and choice Graves is just the 26 person go a little fright when someone said something about 29rs!
@drewstinky if that's the best non race day video you've ever seen you cant have been following dirt tv that long. Get some of this in your life -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utS0cFAzqbo
The thing is though apart from mitch no one is really running a complete enduro machine there all hybrid bikes eg. graves has 180mm forks on the front and full saint setup. stevies has the big forks on the front with 160mm rear as far as I can see ok graves geo might be steeper but unless mitch wins all thats really been proven is that if you take a 160mm enduro bike swap out the parts for freeride/dh parts you can be competitive. In the real world were riders arent sponsored by large companies with all these parts at there disposal you are not going to start changing that much of your bike to race dh surely it would be easier and cheaper just to race a dh bike.
If Stevie wants slack and low geo with only 165 rear, surely it would have been easier and cheaper to just make a new control link for the Wilson to limit the travel, rather than designing and making a completely new bike. There are versions of the Lyrik available with 180mm travel on Scott bikes, even if Rockshox only sell 170 in the aftermarket. I think it has been done because they want a test bed for a 650b enduro bike, rather than because they need to do it for this race.
I think the results will tell tomorrow, but just the fact that at least two top ten guys have chosen to ride smaller bikes shows how capable they are on this track. Now I'm not even close to pro level, but I can see from on TV that this track does not compare to the likes of Champery.
Horses for courses. Look how much WRC cars change from race to race. It's very interesting, and it brings a new level of excitement to our predictions for the race.
I have to assume that everyone complaining "this isn't downhill" are too young to remember that at one time (really not that long ago) DH bikes had 4" of horrendous suspension and a good portion of some tracks would be tame compared to descents on today's XC circuits. It's a race down hill on bikes. I actually look forward to seeing gear choice being a factor (or not?) in the world champs. I never want to see biking like bloody F-1 where you have micro tolerances controlling the bike specs.
I agree with you 100%. It makes racing more interesting to watch and shakes things up a bit. Stevie is basically on what? a Free ride bike? A mini DH rig? Not too long ago 180mm forks were mostly dual crown. So what if dudes are running 170 and 180mm single crown forks for a DH race now. They work better than the forks of yesteryear so why not use them if they can handle the trail. Men want to win, not conform to the ideals of readers lol. It's a pity that people follow trends and each other so much on this site and buy into the bike ideals without actually thinking before ranting nonsensically.
When your job is racing and winning why wouldn't you choose the bike that will benefit you the most? With having whatever size and model bike at your disposal, it makes perfect sense to race whatever bike you feel fastest on. 26in downhill bikes are fast just like 29in trail bikes are fast in their favored environment.
yeah yeah yeah... short travel bikes, enduro bikes , 27.5 bikes 29" bikes bla bla bla...wait, what ? a friggin bottle cage on that thing ? Jesus............
I thought this was bad but WTF...
My money is on the World Enduro series being held here in a few years !
Great vid. Too bad wheel size is so controversial. Kind of takes focus away from the fun aspect. On the other hand it'll be interesting to hear all the post race comments about why people won or didn't. If I went down that track on a DH bike and someone on a 29er hardtail beat me I wouldn't care. cause I just went for a bike ride and had fun. that's all that matters to me. when the market settles down about wheel size and enduro this and that. I'll still be around riding bikes. so that's a win.
ya I was too lazy to actually make sure it was the correct song lol sorry. without lyrics their whole album has a similar sound/feel to it so I mix up their stuff often.
Why did the Specialized mechanic call the Enduro a Stumpjumper?..
I would be pretty happy to see a none 26" win this race just to shut the (d)evolution monkeys up! Also, it would go to show that this is not a real DH track and probably shouldn't be in the WC. maybe they should make it into a loop and make it the XC?
i dont have any problems with a guy who maybe wins a dh race with a 29er enduro, cause the track is good for those bikes, somewhere a dh rig is too much, and like the spesh mechanic said its a physical track, so everything about you, so the rider on the bike it will be a very good race I think
no probs, and you are right about this weapon thing, yes in fact its a bit weird for me to see these "small" bikes among the big boys but, if the UCI rules allow to use a single crown fork, and a frame below 200mills of travel.. they can do what they want
I am specially interested in Stevie's DeVinci Prototype, the one the factory built him for this race, I hope he can manage to win here too, he really deserve it, everytime I see him in a video, or on the podium, I always remember for that section from an olda bike movie (sorry i dont remembr the title) wheere his mum shuttled him up the mountain with a small 4x4 car... and he proudly said, that he wants to be like the big guys, and now he IS the big guy
@clarky - WAKI is not referring to bike or suspension being linear and no-one mentioned linear before him, just (d)evolution. He is referring to the timeline of bike progression, just because this is the newest thing in the line does not mean it is better or will be the next step in bike design.
Like in evolution it is in the shape of a tree, some progressions will evolve and some won't, thus that branch will end there (like 1.5 steerers, 12 inch travel DH/FR bikes etc). The most successful 'branches' will continue if they prove useful.
probably the track, just imagine these bikes in Leogang or Andorra, or maybe Champéry... they would not run good times with these bikes.. for here Africa, they need them to save weight, and manage to pedal more efficiently
and sicklines too, these 4 sites are must have for every biker I think
I thought this was bad but WTF...

Gwin's Demo, has an awesome paint job.
I dont thinks he "needs" a World Champs jersey.
...or a win
...ever.

it will be a very good race I think
WAKI, who said anything about it being or not being linear?
