Practice Photo Epic: EWS Petzen-Jamnica 2022

Two weeks after the Enduro World Series kicked off in Scotland the battle continues along the Austrian and Slovenian borders where the venue and terrain could not be more different. Gone are the tight dark trees and slippery rocks and roots, and short intense stages, as this weekend it's all about vertical drop and some brutally rough stages in Petzen and Jamnica.

The EWS stopped here once prior in 2018 for a two-day slog through the mud in conditions that could only be described as miserable. So when everyone arrived to dry trails and a forecast of sunshine you could almost hear the collective sigh of relief. It's not that racers hate the rain, but more so that the white limestone rocks in the Slovenian hills and what seem like never-ending off-camber roots are so incredibly slippery when wet that it's nice to know you aren't rolling the dice as much each run.  And honestly... Who doesn't like dry loamy dirt when already doing battle with multiple stages lasting over 10 minutes.

The split venue between two countries is unique at this stop of the series and each side of the border comes with its own unique flavor. On the Slovenian side the trails are more remote and natural, the type you might find in your own local forest. Lots of fresh loamy dirt, a bit tighter, lots of roots all connected by traversing pasture land. The Austrian side on the other hand is an absolute monster. With the race beginning and ending there on two separate 1100m stages that riders have described as just savage. Steep, rough, long, and arm pump inducing it is these two stages that will possibly blow the race wide open, similar to what we have seen with the Whistler classic, Top of the World.

Racing gets underway in Austria on Saturday with the Pro Stage, and continues Sunday in Slovenia before returning to Austria for the finish.  Stay tuned for all the updates as they happen

Crazy that 6' 1" Jack Moir is running the new Canyon in size SMALL and crushing it.

Have bikes gotten too long?

How is Canyon going to spin that one?

Accidentally downvoted…I meant to upvote.. I guess I can’t change my vote.

Long bikes make average riders feel good on flow trails. New bikes moved away from helping fast riders get faster a while ago.

You heard it here first! A solitary enduro rider with an injured shoulder is riding an undersized bike. Everyone sell your Large and Medium frames before all the Smalls are snatched up. Nevermind what you feel comfortable on. Wink

Note: Moir's riding style is wildly different than most. Watch some videos, and note how he uses his rear; it's more a rudder than a wheel. With a longer bike, it's harder to get the majority of your weight over the front and kick that rear around.

@spankthewan: that shoulder injury may affect choice for shorter bike for sure at least after a surgery not so far back
  • 7 0
@spankthewan: different strokes for different folks and nothing is one size fits all. Jack rides fairly straight up and moves his bike under him a lot compared to others... Contrast with Greg Minnaar who rides quite stretched out/flat back and keepa bike very quiet underneath him. Nothing is a frame design flaw, just personal preference (math says I should ride a large Yeti but prefer a medium, same goes for Richie Rude)

@davetrumpore: yeah, ok. Good. But.. canyon went too far anyways. they should rename their sizes , and phase out the S-M-L ..

well Slawomir Lukasik is still riding the old Strive :-D That's even worse.

Great shots. Interesting how many riders have seatposts showing plentiful posts.

Because brands are upsizing their bikes (an L becomes an M, etc) and shortening the seat tubes in accordance. So those who use the latest bikes but wish to stick with same dimensions they are used to, will have to size down, and will have extra seatpost exposure as a result.

@DavidGuerra: This. Low stand over height these days is mostly design taking over function.

Thank you thank you... In a media landscape now dominated by short random phone videos for "clicks" its nice to hear people can still appreciate the power of still photos.

@NZRalphy: call me old school but I'd prefer the images to be described in a handwritten letter delivered by tall ship, but then stolen by pirates, lost overboard in a storm and recovered hundreds of years later in a chest that floated to the west coast of Canada only to be discovered on the beach by a slam poet and tiktokked
