Semi-Final Results from the Leogang DH World Cup 2023

Jun 17, 2023
by Ed Spratt
The results are in from the flat-out semi-finals in Leogang.

First up in the packed schedule of racing today was the Elite Women and the track looked to be running better than the Elite qualifying as Vali Höll went around six seconds faster than her top qualifying time. Vali Höll was the dominant force in semi-finals as she led from top to bottom leaving Nina Hoffmann and Camille Balanche with no answer to her speed.

Nina Hoffmann was looking good before a crash into the finish area. This could spell trouble for the German rider as she is still recovering from a knee injury. Hopefully, she is all good for finals. Camille Balanche has been unbeatable in Leogang since 2020 but she could not match the winning pace in semi-finals crossing the line in 3rd. Camille doesn't have much time to regroup before heading back up the hill for the most important run of the week.

The speeds were kept high for the Elite Men's semi-final as Finn Iles made it another great day for the Specialized team taking the win by almost a second. Finn Iles held the lead all the way down from the second split as he bested Loic Bruni on the drying course. Wrapping up the top three was Troy Brosnan who ended his run just 1.2 seconds off the pace. Riders found it tricky to trust the track after yesterday's conditions so expect the pace to rise again in finals now riders are fully up to speed on the course.

Check out the results below.

Y'all sure like to complain. I'm just glad that racing's back on. I haven't watched the finals yet but it was especially fun to see Vali do so well at home.

 welcome to the internet

CG is a cool OG dude but realistically he doesn't belong there. Everything just sounds awkward. Bring Back Rob Warner !
  • 10 7
the drone shot was terrible either half the body or high above. It felt like the men's had only half the track shown compared to the women's feed. Plus I'm sorry but CG needs to ask warner for some lessons as his commentary was shite.
  • 4 1
I feel like it's just a matter of time before they crash the drone into a rider.
  • 3 0
 @Oolex: they were getting close
  • 5 0
The drone through the tunnel was pretty sweet. I'm counting my blessings on this one. Drone shots are awesome even if not perfect.

CG is the worst. Try hard to be funny.

I am just pretending the semi-finals are the finals and enjoying it for free the best I can. I have to say it’s much better than I thought it would be

Cedric sounds like a bad Sacha Baron Cohen character.
  • 6 4
His commentating style swings between pointing out the obvious and utter gibberish.
  • 4 0
Why the fuck are they showing an interview with some random team coach while someone's run is going.

Pretty amazing to me how these guys are putting 2-5 seconds into each other on the less technical high speed sections at the start and finish. How hard you can sprint has to be the difference between first and tenth.
  • 3 1
The announcers have to work on their math skills when Revelli finishes in 23rd and they say "it might work" (to move to finals) with only 4 riders left. I guess they had other priorities in grade school.
  • 8 5
I can’t handle the screaming commentator so I’ve muted GCN+ while watching it.
  • 8 4
 But Warner is gone
  • 1 0
 Agreed
  • 4 0
You can go ambient sound on GCN so you just have natural sound no commentary
  • 5 2
@wblh: no one seems to get it that all Warner did was shout the same 3 words and 5 phrases over and over.

@no-good-ideas: Its not what Rob said its how he said it. He could be doing a table read of pride and prejudice and get my heart going.

@acali: He definitely had the 'x-factor' or whatever because this new team just feels so flat. Rob definitely did his homework as well (or his RedBull researchers did?) because he always had some interesting news or fact about riders to fill in dead air or just add a bit extra to the story of each run. These two repeat each other a lot as well. Rob was doing it for a long time though so maybe we should be a little less harsh and give them a chance to improve with practice.

@cains08: Just watched the latest round. I think I'll be ok with Rick. Maybe Cedric will grow into the Claudio role. Not great but next to Rob Claudio seemed fine. He'll need to learn to repeat "He hit the sweet spot" over and over again to really be Claudio.

Somewhere into watching the latest round I found myself less distracted by the changes and actually enjoying the race.

Personally I'm super stoked that racing is back, but having paid out for GCN+ I'm surprised how visually shit the quality is. Throw into it the spud camera that's attached to the drone and the whole thing is pretty hard to watch for me.
  • 1 0
I noticed the free version was 1080p max and pixelated. I wondered if the paid version was higher quality
  • 2 0
Are you watching on a smart TV app? For me on Desktop and in the iOS app the quality is much higer than it was with Red Bull.
  • 1 0
@Nuss-95: Smart TV app. I'll try desktop, hopefully see some improvement
  • 1 0
The drone quality won't improve, unfortunately. Not sure why we're going backwards here. Drone picture and piloting was insanely good last year. You'd think Discovery would have the same resources for the broadcast as Redbull, or at least comparable, no?
  • 1 0
Did Dakota get bumped from the semis by protected riders, or did he just not qualify? (I thought he had qualified.)
  • 1 0
Edit- didn't see the name somehow, nevermind
  • 1 0
Well that's me read the top five from another final. This is so much less time consuming!

Crazy seeing Sam Hill getting his ass handed to him.
