Video: Someone Has Jumped Over the Tour de France... Again

Sep 18, 2020
by James Smurthwaite

It seems the one thing COVID-19 hasn't been able to disrupt in the mountain biking world this year is the annual tradition of jumping the Tour de France. This time it was Dan Leclercq of the probably aptly named "Brainless Family" who jumped the peloton on Stage 14 of the Tour between Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon. The jump is claimed to be 8 metres high and 18 metres across.

This year's jump wasn't as well timed as last year's by Valentin Anouilh with Dan jumping a bit before the peloton arrived but maybe he was just trying to be responsibly socially distant.

For more Tour de France jumps, click here.

Thanks to @audric for the tip

Next year, Barelli soars over and teabags the peloton while piloting the updated version of Grim Donut. Make it happen, PB.

 With his 3 balls.

Does he have to teabag them , not me cuppa tea !

 Yeh sounds hairy.

@moduwave: we'll need to remember him to put his brakes levers way up or he might hit one of the racers in the head with his low hanging jewel.

What can you say, we are a country of traditions. Some of the other things we do is we eat frogs and snails. Delicious.
  • 22 13
the frogs and snails are delicious, as are the cheese, wine, pastry...everything in France is delicious. and anyone who thinks the TDF is stupid can go fuck themselves
  • 11 1
That's your "go to"? Frogs and snails? Man, the croissants and pains-au-chocolat are, shall we say, beaucoup mieux?!

Don't forget the application of the guillotine to inept rulers. Sure would be a shame if that happened in some country right now. Big shame. Tremendous.

I’ve only been able to visit “Budget France”
Quebec is a lovely place, however.

No peloton... Doesn't count. It's just a road gap without the Tour.
  • 12 4
Edit: just incase you are upset, it's sarcasm ffs.

Pretty nice to be seen by the racers imo

Guys stop saying he jumped to early, missed his tour the france gap, etc.... in the beginning, in french, he said that the most important thing was that it stays safe for the Tour de France! So yeah, pretty sure he wanted to jump just ahead of the riders.... Did you read all the comments last year, on Pinkbike? Pretty sure 95% of pinkbikers think it was a good idea to do so. Plus, like somebody wrote here, for once all the roadies can see him jumping! lol

I thought it was well timed for all of these reasons. They are definitly in view and in frame for this shot, and it's respectful. Besides, like you point out, if directly overhead, the leaders never even see what happened.
  • 1 0
 @snomaster: Exactly!

When is some one going to jump over the person jumping over the Tour?
  • 37 0
Or a tour jump party train. A peloton over a peloton.

In years past there has been backlash over more "well-timed" jumps -- maybe this is the ideal timing?

Still some danger to tour riders, but substantially less.
  • 19 0
i think it is a better idea to jump a couple of seconds before the peloton, Just in case there is something going wrong at the takeoff like the guy who fell on the train rails in pemberton
  • 3 0
Ok ya i get that, repsect.

The big production shows how boring and dated the jump is now. Next time douse him in petrol and light him before the jump.

Who is the eejit at 00:35s crouched at the landing leaning to their right as if to get out of the way. 'HOLY Shite was that an Ibis? That was dirt from a bike that did the job!' Were they making sure to turn off their camera to save battery life, or too late to turn it on? Somebody should post a compilation video of spectators too close during road and mtb events.
  • 3 1
timing was fine to me... could of thrown a table or no hander or something. the riders of the peloton had a sick view, and I bet they appreciate the early jump. it shows forethought of preventing an accident or miscalculation. Having that many camera angles also shows that these guys weren't taking anything to chance. what a great achievement , every single time. congrats!!!!!

 nice bar hump.
  • 6 2
Can’t get in trouble if you technically don’t go over them LOL.
  • 2 0
Gotta keep the tradition alive, he maybe left half a second too early but a mighty fine effort nonetheless.
  • 2 0
Never gets old seeing these. Need to get it into a televised section of the race!
  • 2 1
Jumping the tour is done, where is the progression? Backflip the tour, cashroll the tour, tailwhip the tour. It could be used as a wildcard entry into Rampage.
  • 3 1
 @jamessmurthwaite
Cheers mate!
  • 1 2
The tour has been so exciting this week. If he jumped the tour it would have been cool, looked like he jumped the road in front of them though. Legit pallet road gap, old school.
  • 3 0
@betsie: yeah it has, such epic mountain battles and the green jersey / KOM battle has been a true joy. The scenery has been exceptionally epic as well.
  • 2 0
@jgottya1: +1 I've watched Le Tour plenty of times, so shouldn't be surprised by the beauty of the landscape, but man it's just been stunning this year.
  • 2 0
There needs to be a train of jumpers to really step it up
  • 1 0
Are the MTB Police going to call this one out for not actually jumping over the Tour De France?
  • 1 1
Not sure that was close to 59 feet out (maybe the arc of the jump) but still sick!
  • 1 0
it was a decent enough jump without all the cyclists below! that was crazy
  • 1 0
Sick tradition and that was pretty huge! Félicitations!
  • 5 6
That shit is not cool anymore. Dave Watson's OG move in the rocky gnar was impressive...not manicured ladder bridges and practiced gaps. Just sayin.
  • 2 0
au contraire. was cool the first time. still cool now.
  • 2 0
 he jumped too early
  • 1 0
This is becoming a good tradition. He jumped the gun on that one though.
  • 1 0
Randy would have tuck no handed it.... I wish I knew where Randy is now.
  • 3 0
 He's hangin' out with Waki.

most styly Tour de France jump yet. And the end is why France is getting 8500 COVID cases a day.
  • 1 2
Yawn. At least they all wore masks properly while they celebrated their unoriginal achievement with a sweaty bro orgy at the end....oh wait.
  • 1 0
Nice ! Going big never goes out of style.
  • 1 0
 NEVER GETS OLD!!?
  • 1 0
 This is awesome tup
  • 5 8
I can't imagine that there is a more boring competition in the world than tour de france. But jumps like this makes it interesting. Now that I´we watched it, lets go back to watching paint dry.
