Share the Ride 2010

by Calgary Cycle
Bikes are fun and kids should be able to ride them!

Well fellow cycling maniacs 'tis the season to be merry. As we all know, nothing can make a cycling nut happier during the festive season than a new ride! No one knows this better than the boys at Pinkbike. A few years back we participated in an event they held annually called “Share the Ride”. This event gives bikes to kids who do not have the means. To me the love affair with bikes begins when we get our first wheeled contraption. Be it a big-wheel, a trike or a bmx. We just grow up feeling the wind on our face and fall in love. Nothing brings a tear to my eye faster than a child never feeling that freedom. The Pinkbike lads did a beautiful thing when they gave away bikes to kids in need. We had a great time participating in Calgary.

We had it all set up in a school gymnasium and got to see a hundred or so kids get new bikes for Christmas. It couldn’t have been any better.

As we all know, life is always keeping us busy and over the years the program faded away and we have gone a few Christmases without the event. With a new addition to my family I realized how important this event really is. I contacted Pinkbike and they were immediately on board.

We here at Calgary Cycle, Pure Cycle and calgarycycleonlne.com are all going to donate $1000 each for a total of $3000. Pinkbike will also be donating $1000 towards the pile of brand new bikes. With the generous support of TREK we are able to provide bikes to 55 kids.

We are holding the “Share the Ride for Christmas” sale to hopefully cause some hype. Can you participate? Of course, you will be able to donate to Calgary Cycle, Pure Cycle and calgarycycleonline.com. If you'd like to donate through Pinkbike.com using your PayPal account, please donate to [email protected].

In addition to donations, Calgary Cycle, Pure Cycle and calgarycycleonline.com will be donating 2% of every bike purchased during the entire month of December to the bike fund. The more bikes we can get for the kid’s, the better.

photo

We will be taking donations until December15 so we can get all the bikes ordered, built and put into the kid’s hands by December 20. Wheelies and sweet jumps should follow shortly. If you have any questions please call or email any of the locations.

Click the store links to see for yourself and checkout our Facebook pages for additional daily specials. As always there will be tons of in store only specials. So come on by for some eggnog and killer deals for the holidays. Don’t forget to give some spare change so we can get as many kids as possible rollin’.

From all the folks here at our team have a great holiday season.

DH is such a rich kid sport it's not even funny.
  • 130
@dirtbagbiker Dont let hard work keep you from having what you want in a DH rig
  • 112
@dirtbagbiker I have to disagree me and my mates work bloody hard for what we have, yea there are rich kids but you get that with any sport or anything really
  • 42
Yeah I'm working on making the money but it's not easy, frustrates me to see some people my age with really nice DH bikes and they think nothing of it.
  • 20
@dirtbagbiker, not everyone who is youth does'nt apreciate there dh bike, i got a iron horse sunday which i paid for my self and i never think how good it would be to have one of these new bikes (does'nt help when your brother has an Empire AP-1!) and i never doubt it, its got me on the podium a few times! aha
  • 50
Yea DH isn't cheap but most of us work hard for our bike parts, I know what you mean though by rich kids, I saw this kid he was probably in 8th or 9th grade, BRAND SPANKIN new 951 with a full saint build... WTF?
  • 10
This is great, I love it!
  • 51
And often those kids that don't have to work for their bikes end up not being all that great of a rider. Just saying.
  • 20
pretty much all my money has gone to my kona stinky deeluxe haha... although the parents aren't too fond of that!

@dirtbagbiker, wtf, im 14, i ride a demo 9 with a dorado, and im getting a saint crankset, avid code brakes, saint shifter and rearderailler. im also getting my bike re-painted, my parents are better off, i got to a privite school, and i payed for my whole bike, i live the damn thing, so stfu, and stop hating on others cuz u cant afford what they have. the world if full of jelous people these days....
  • 81
who gives you the money? exactly it all boils down to your parents
  • 120
wow rcpro88, you're such a prick. bragging about how you have a really nice bike and then you found it mandatory to name all the specs, like anyone really needed to know that. and im not hating on anyone.
  • 110
rcpro88 is being a douche bag by listing off all these thing alot of people not quite as well off as he is cannot afford, but in his defense he lives in Missouri which is a pretty useless state so he really doesn't have much else to spend his money on... check and mate.

@mtbKELSEY I was that kid with the saint 951 haha and yah im 14 but i dont do soccer or baseball(witch costs about 3000 a year or so)so i get DH bikes......you know?
  • 50
haha you picked the wrong crowd to mess with rcpro88
  • 22
oh and i agree with u guys hes a bragging asshole maybe hes in a situation wher he cant afford that jobs arent the easiest things to get nowa days
  • 20
yeah jack because you know all about jobs, sports don't cost anything near 3000, soccer , lacrosse , baseball , basketball , all those sports cost about 600 and under each.lacrosse is the most because of gear but once you get a nice set you can use it over an over
  • 31
Im 12 and i have a downhiller. I work really hard around the house and sell shit on pinkbike and i do shit for the neighbors so it just depends on how willing you are. It takes a long time to get these things though.
  • 32
glad your parents pay you for working in your own house.
  • 30
i'm 17 and work 30+ hour weeks at minimum wage to afford all my bike stuff. making money yourself (legit work, not your parents paying you $50 to take out the trash) makes you appreciate your bike so much more than having mommy and daddy buy it for you. sure it may be nice for your parents to buy you stuff but in the end you're better off learning the value of a buck and hard work.
  • 11
yeah and thats only if your lucky enough toget a job
  • 10
 totally agree with shredwhiteandblue

haha, you guys don't even know what shit i do, i mean really, you guys hate on people just cuz they have better stuff than you, and always say "oh ur parents bought it for you"...I bought all my crap by mowning yards, and yeah, i live in st.louis, but we can afford to go to colorado every month or so for a week. And here people (or atlease where i live in st.louis) people are rich, they have big lawns and they pay alot. the only reason i listed my sht that im getting is to tell you how much you can get by mowing lawns at the age of 14....AND I DO NOT GET ALLOWENCE, that is for retards who can't do sht to save their life.... btw, i play lacrosse for varsity, and a select team, it cost around 1000 to play for my school, and about 2000-3000 for the select team due to traveling...
  • 33
 gud 4 u.
  • 21
keep talking rcpro88, i find this story to be invigorating and I would love to hear more
  • 21
rcpro keep telling us about your sick weekend trips to Vail and how rich everyone in your neighborhood is and how much it costs to play your sports.. list the 0-60 for your dad's car perhaps? i think it's funny how you say "you guys hate on people just cuz they have better stuff than you".. hahahaha you're right you're better than all of us because who could EVER afford to live in YOUR neighborhood and have YOUR bike lol
  • 13
probably an only child too. lol
  • 23
Hahahaha he's bragging but go On his profile and look at his demo......garbage
  • 10
you know, some people in this world can't afford $4000 bikes
  • 21
yeah dude i saw it, he made it sound way nicer than it really is.
  • 20
Im only 12 so i cant get a job so you need to calm down all you haters. mow lawns and shit around the neighborhood to affored all of my shit. Just because i do shit around my house and my parents give me an allowance doesnt mean that my money doesnt count for what i but. I still have to work for it.
  • 40
i dont mind if you truly work for it, but more than likely you're getting more money that you should for jobs. however i can still respect people who have their bikes given to them IF they treat it with respect and appreciate what they have, because as we can see in the article, plenty of kids dont even have a bike to ride in the first place
  • 11
 right, tup
  • 60
I like how such a nice article about giving bikes to young children for Christmas, has been deformed and destroyed by you twits arguing about who has what, and who doesn't have what, and how so and so is a cocky jerk, etc...etc...etc... You should feel ashamed.
  • 10
 Well said
  • 13
cyyrix you just said that to make yourself look good
  • 10
 cam............
  • 130
Mega props to all, that right there, is how you get kids off the damn couch
  • 70
That's a rad thing to do for christmas, I'm sure it made a lot of deserving kids stoked! Going to breed a bunch of little shredders
  • 80
what a great idea, hat off to everyone involved.
  • 80
I've never had a brand new bike Cry
  • 33
Regardless of your age, this comment should get you some industry folks storming your inbox with proposals. Good one Wink
  • 30
If you still have those transitions I'm not sure you deserve much sympathy. Smile
  • 20
says the 18 year old with transitions. Its lucky enough you have those. DH is one of my favorite things to do but is a little difficult on a hardtail and i dont complain But im 16 so its reasonable why i cant afford one. Great job for giving away those bikes hope those kids become great bikers.
  • 10
i get paid 9 bucks an hour, all i do is save save save, it may take along time, but its deffinatley worth it when you get your bike, Razz
  • 60
that is awesome. Good job guys. I can remember when i got my bike for christmas, i rode it around the house all day Razz my parents werent happy.
  • 30
Great work folks love seeing the smiling faces on new bikes. Just kinda wondering what ever happened to getting folks from all around getting involved in this. Our group here on the East coast got involved with the "Share The Ride" thru Pinkbike about 2 years ago, raised $1000.00 and gave 40 new bikes to kids, it was awesome. It seems it was a 1 time deal which is a real shame because it made so many kids happy that normally would not have the opportunity to get a bike at all.

I can only imagine & realize the amount of work and organization it must have taken to get it all sorted out, but the end result were very happy kids. I'd love to do it all over again but without support, resources, and contacts of the likes Pinkbike and other groups have, it's really hard to make it happen (ie: sweet deals on kids bikes from Trek/Norco).

Radek & I did alot of long distance conversations and struggled getting the bikes across the country, but in the end 40 shiny new bikes arrived, and 40 really happy kids saddled up onto their very first NEW bike, complete with helmets!

I'd really like to see this get reached out farther again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 30
There is a group that does this in upstate NY (near Syracuse). They just lost a helmet donor but someone immediately took up the slack. No healthy kid should ever get a nintendo or playstation before they get a bicycle. This is a great program.
  • 30
Good stuff, we are def goin to have to get off our butts and get something organized locally. It just seemed like an awesome idea that year to do the global outreach thing.
  • 20
Great program you guys have here. Right on.

When I was a young 'un (not that long ago) getting a bike for Christmas was the ultimate gift. Now every kid wants a PlayStation or something like that, so its great to see that kids are still getting stoked on playing outside with thier bikes.

Wow, I feel old after posting that...
  • 10
there should also definitely be an adult program of some sort because it is parents who have to lead by example and ride along side for the obvious reasons. It would be a great addition to have the incentive to go ride with your kiddos!
  • 10
Kids on bikes...I think everyone can remember the trials and tribulations with bikes as kids. Getting the coolest bike ever, then the training wheels come off, crashes, road rash, stolen bikes, found bikes. Most of my good memories as a kid involve a bicycle or lets face it, just being outside. Awesome to keep the nostalgia and tradition alive. In fact my brother and I are cooking up a master plan to get my nephew his first real bike. "Real" consisting of hand brakes and a brand name (to him anyway haha) I can't wait to take him riding this spring!
  • 10
When i was younger my parrents couldn't afford to buy me new bikes but well i solved that when i got two sponsors one called ''Hard'' and another one called ''Work'' still saving for a DH rig for the kicks Big Grin but i already got a Suburban and a WTP envy which provides me with all the fun i need so no rush Big Grin
  • 10
i love downhill, however i wish i had the right bike. im 14 and save so much to get these. i just hate those rich kids that get new bikes every season and always hjave the top of the line stuff. i ride an intense m1 now, but need a smaller one like a 951 or something. dh is a sport you need money. tires are at least 60-75 a pop. you need money to get into the game. starting at a young age and trying to get into the sport is tought. but with hard work anything is achievable
  • 10
very much agreed!!! 15 and struggling. But in 3 years, ill be riding Gethin Smile
  • 30
hahaha, basiclly ask everyone who makes money from selling bikes/bike bits Smile except rock shox??
  • 10
Thats very very nice, everyone should get a chance to truy out a cycle, never know when one of those kids will be the next big Pro's! much better then some pc games or what soever atleast they stay outside.
  • 21
Why dont they ask Fox, Rock Shox and other major companies if they would chip in. They wouldnt really say no, unless they are seriously selfish.
  • 21
yeah thats what i was thinking. FOX is a HUGE company.
  • 10
It's a shame that most of those kids look way too big for those bikes. They have the seats right up and have they're feet flat on the floor.
  • 10
Also some of the boys have pink bikes... But i guess they cant choose. A bikes a bike in the end and there all fun to ride. Except a tandem.
  • 10
But there is nothing wrong with boys and pink bike Razz we mix well... By the way, the last comment was wrong. I realise that some of the girls look kinda like boys. Forget all i have said. i would have edited but it was to late
  • 10
Thats's pretty awesome. I wish i got a new bike for Christmas. Must be kind of a let down for the boys riding pink bikes though
  • 10
Thats what i thought, but look again. im sure they are girls
  • 10
This is awesome! Nothing greater than sharing the sport we love with people that wouldn't otherwise have the chance...GREAT JOB!!!
  • 30
 thumbs up !
  • 11
Please someone share the ride with me too.. hopefully the one with Fox 40's and a full suspension frame.. and everything good.
  • 10
Greedy!!! I want one too! Smile Nah, im good. Im saving to get one. May take three years, but hopefully it will be worth it!!! I cant wait!! By the way, do you think we could donate bikes? I may want to part with my 3 year old bmx...
  • 31
agreed but ask norco or specialized not rock shox
  • 10
