France’s beloved Pompon, Myriam Nicole, was awarded third place with a time of 5:37.74.

bigquotesThe track was good and super fast. We thought it was going to be a lot calmer but it was a gnarly track. Good fun though, it is a really good course - Gee Atherton.

Rachel Atherton is definitely back at her top level.

Rachel Atherton also commented on the technicality of the course:

bigquotesThe track is one of the hardest tracks I have ridden this year, for sure. I didn't fancy going off the big step down. I need to stay healthy for the World Cups. I just tried to ride the track good and fast, and get some lines. You have to push where you can and hold back when you are nervous. - Rachel Atherton

The course is a new addition to the Les 2 Alpes Bike Park and was designed by Mick Hannah and Marc Beaumont, who just missed the podium coming in fourth overall. The trail crew of the resort of Les 2 Alpes built the trail with Ayton Concept and Seb Chovet, co-producer of Crankworx Les 2 Alpes.

“We started building the track ‘Fury’ for the Air DH last October 2011 and we finished this year in June,” says Chovet. “We will take rider feedback to integrate some changes and I have already talked to designer Marc Beaumont who said it was a tough race but that he loved the track.”

“Fury” drops a total of 700m over a length of 2.8 km and is open to the public as a double black diamond trail in the Les 2 Alpes Bike Park. The length coupled with technical sections of single track and huge jumps, including the now infamous road gap that took out third place qualifier Aurelian Giordanengo, make “Fury” an apt name.

Aint got nothin on whistler air DH!
  • 7 5
Because that's a fair comparison... Wink

The Athertons absolutely crushed it! it makes me wonder how Gwin would do on a track like this.

Does anyone know if Dan is competing in any events here?
  • 8 2
It's not a fair comparison, hence the statement that it "aint got nothin on whistler air DH!"

 Dan is racing the enduro!

redrook- comparing oranges to apples, haha. and that's tight on Dan racing the enduro! can't wait to see how well he holds his own.

zoomzoomchicken you had to be there to see the size of some of these jumps great track over 450 entered and only 95 raced, the videos and pics just dont show the size of the jumps even the last one to the finish it was nearly 40 ft to clear to down slop but looks nothing in the video

Tracey Hannah was nearly 15 secs down on Rachel Athertons time that is insane.
  • 13 0
True, Tracy Hannah is riding well at the moment, but this one is quite a long descent aswell which produces the chance for such big margins, however, 22 seconds on Myriam shows Miss Atherton is definitely smashing it....so is Gee with 10 seconds on Danny Hart. Well done the Athertons!!
  • 1 1
can someone explain why there's such a big difference, 10 seconds with harts. rachel got 15 seconds those GT atherton fast fast fast
  • 2 0
jimbsport- its all relative to how long the track is. Take a look at the Garbanzo race at Whistler's Crankworxs, for example. Its an almost 14 minute run and the difference between Blenkinsop (1st) and 2nd place was almost 13 seconds. Its still insane to win on a 5 minute track by 5 seconds but its def. more expected to happen.

A win over other top ranked riders is a win over other top ranked riders. I'm sure Gee is stoked as shit.

it's only a win if Aaron Gwin is racing...
  • 21 2
Sorry but youve got to be in it to win it Wink
  • 3 2
apparently some people took that the wrong way...i'd love to see gee slay gwin many times over, i'm a total Atherton fan...i dont like the guy but he's got the field outclassed right now by a long ways...
  • 1 0
Haha, why don't you like the guy? I bet you've never met him at a personal level so its a bit strange to not like someone based only on their dh career.

what is the problem with that? The men are more exciting, more competition, and faster pace. When the women can race at the same speeds the will make the same amount of money.
  • 11 3
zoomzoom, that is the dumbest logic I've ever heard. Fact is women get paid much less in all sport. In terms of equality it's bs, they are competing at the same level in relative measures, and putting in the same amount of work etc. However, it all boils down to advertising influence and marketing. There are fewer women interested in doing the sport than men so marketing (and therefore financial return) favours men.

To Pabail, I say why exactly? As soon as you distinguish between groups you are being self-defeating. If we encourage more women then me must encourage more of each race/religion/gender/sexuality until all the demographics equate. We don't "need" any specific number of anyone in the sport. It's good to encourage lots more people in general, but not a specific group.
  • 5 1
Redrook, by far one of the most intelligent comments ive seen on here, bravo sir.
  • 5 3
zoomzoomchicken's reason is not "dumb" at all. If you had two courses at a World Cup race - one for men and one for women and each one far enough apart that you had to choose one OR the other, far more than half the crowd would line the men's course. You watch a men's heat of 4X and then comes a women's heat, it is like they are in slow-motion and in most cases they roll the jumps that the junior men are stylin' over. I'm not being sexist, I'm being factual.

Secondly, once while organising a DH event we discussed prize money and one of the women piped up "I don't see why we should get as much prizemoney as the men. We only make up ten per cent of the field and so we don't give as much into the prize pool [via race fees]." I was so impressed at her impartiality and logic that I jokingly asked her to marry me. Even her girlfriend thought that was funny.

I don't know if it still occurs, but not too long ago women were getting the same prize money in professional tennis as the men because they were the players the crowds came to watch. I blame the boring Federer for that though.
  • 3 3
And one more point. How many guys do you know or have heard of that bought a Demo after Sam Hill started riding one? And exactly how many people have bought a Fury because Rachel is now on one? What about Danny and his Glory versus Jill and her Norco... what ever she's riding - I wouldn't know.

Complete this sentence without researching it: Caroline Buchanen is a two times world 4X champion, just became a BMX World Champion, and the brand of bike she rides is a...[insert brand here].
  • 3 1
redrook, i just want more fit women in the world im not giving a monkeys about pc correctness there. im just sayin. if there was more ladies then yes advertising which pays for the prizes would increase it would maybe inspire more females to take part / win in the sport.

would it be nice to meet a female that was into mountainbiking too... i just dont see whats wrong with that....that.. pipe dream of mine Smile

We need more Jews getting into the sport
  • 5 2
iamamodel - I don't know what rider you were talking to, but they weren't a mathematician. If there are fewer women then you could still pay them the same amount for each finish position and be using less money. Oh and without looking it up I can tell you Buchanan rides for Commencal.
If you read my comment properly, I state that women are performing at an equal level relatively. That is to say that they are still giving it 100% and performing at the top of their capabilities. Just because their physical capabilities are different doesn't mean it's any less demanding for them, if anything it's more difficult for them to ride some of the stuff, dh isn't all rollable jumps.

Pabail- increased advertising might attract a few more, but tbh, I didn't see any advertising for the sport before I started it. The fact is that men are attracted to different things than women. Most guys I know think dh is cool when I talk about it, most women I know switch off completely upon mention of the subject. It's a pipe dream, but there are lots of girls who are into biking, but nothing comes to he who waits so go find them!
  • 3 4
redrook by your logic then people in Novice Grade D should also get the same prize money as Pro Men, because they are also giving 100%.

 Buchanan rides Speedco
  • 2 5
iamamodel you're a hero. I was going to mention the tennis prize money too. What a load of bollocks that is. Men should be paid more because they are better. Fact. Female tennis players, actually female sports players in general, if you think you're worth the same prize money as the men why not just combine the pots into one and just have an open contest. Men vs. Women. See how much money the girls win then. Spesh have sold four demos to my friends on the back of Sam Hill. Giant have sold two Glories because of Danny Hart. No one cares what bikes the girls are riding. Female sport is a sideshow. That's the truth. Please don't give me negative props! Gee Man, finally something to smile about. Good on you. Gee for the world champs!

And another thing. Who cares if there are more girls riding bikes? I'm married to a hot girl who likes getting her hair done, shopping and painting her nails. She loves to read books and watch TV. She's ridden the bike I bought her about 10km in three years. I'd take her over a manly DH racer girl with scars and big balls (metaphorical) any day. Girls who are good at sport are generally masculine. Who wants a GF like that? Not me. Trust me kids, when you're actually old enough to have a serious relationship with a shiela, you'll RELISH the chance to get away from her for a few hours and ride your bike.
  • 2 4
the market is stronger for the men. It's just simple economics.
  • 2 4
Number of people involved is a fair argument. If you divide prize money with a number of competitors man are terribly disadvantaged. There is 11 times less chance for you to win and only twice the amount of money. I'am aware that man have better contracts the women but for a good reason. It's not a sexist thing but pure economics. Being PC will not help, but from a marketing prospective you have to invest much more into women to get the same ROI as is on man.
  • 4 0
Wow, there's some seriously strange logic going on here, with people throwing around the words marketing and economics without knowing what they mean (BLIPDH). iamamodel, no, people in the Novice grade argument doesn't work, they are not entered in the pro category. The women and men are entered in their respective pro categories, therefore the prizes should reflect that.

jaame - definitely, which also agrees with redrook's point. Men are different from women, but that doesn't mean either should be paid less.
  • 4 0
I was just thinking that, a lot of people pretending to know marketing/economics. Hey you'll never beat the stubborn idiots who hold us back from progress. Zhiloreznik - You don't have a clue what marketing means. Marketing people do not work with finance, they work with advertising and promotion.
  • 1 0
wow everyone goes so ott when something might relate to sexism! Women and men do not race against each other because they are of a different standard, different competitiveness (in terms of numbers), create a different amount of interest... etc I think it is absolutely fair to say that the female world of mountainbiking is far less developed than the mens' and the prize purse for being at the top of the game reflects this. I very much doubt that rachel is moping about after the races and saying to gee "this is so unfair, why do you get more money than me wa wa wa". Instead she's probably completely stoked at her win and her prize money and proud to be an ambassador for female cycling.
I don't know but I'm guessin most of the above comments are by blokes enjoying a ant rather than girls feeling a need to stand up for themselves?! (Though that may be a bit of a hypocritical thing to say!)
