Interview: Emily Batty on Loneliness, Burnout & The 2020 Olympics
@tomoostv: You're right in that China has been sourcing more soybeans from Brazil, but it is not for oil. It's is primarily to feed pigs and chickens, to support the growing demand for these animal derived products. That same soy is also bought by many European countries for animal feed. To claim that the small minority of vegans is contributing to deforestation is not correct - very little Brazilian soy is used to feed humans directly. Hell, only 3% of US soymeal is consumed by people. 68% of the oil is used for processed foods and for frying. 80% of the soy produced is meal, 20% oil - have a look at the US Soy Checkoff website.

@bcmrider: It's about each individual making changes in their daily life that can have a greater effect than just hoping someone will come along to overhaul agricultural practices like monocropping.

@t-stoff: I understand there's truth to what you're saying, but there has been a global net loss in plant and animal biodiversity, with one of the main drivers being deforestation/habitat loss. The loss of certain forests are also more significant than others, e.g. deforestation in the Amazon is has a greater net effect than say forestland in Germany, due to the higher density of animal and plant species occurring in the Amazon.

There's a new generation of athletes on plant-based diets that are making waves in their respective disciplines. James Cameron even produced a documentary about it 'Game Changers'. Wondering if any XCO riders have tried that out.
