Heading into the second day of racing in Madeira, race leaders Martin Maes and Isabeau Courdurier both held sizeable leads over their nearest rivals. While they had the luxury of possibly playing it safe in some spots, the riders chasing the final podium spots certainly did not. In both the men's and women's fields positions, two through five were separated by a few seconds or less. With five stages on the menu for Sunday, it was set up for some amazing and tight racing.

In the women's race, Isabeau Courdurier pulled further ahead through the day, while the battle raged behind. Ella Conolly would win a stage but suffer a mechanical on another, landing her in 3rd, only a second ahead of Morgane Charre going into the final stage. Noga Korem would push up into a secure second position and like Isabeau, had the luxury of being able to ride a bit defensively towards the end of the day. In the battle for third, it would be youngster Ella Conolly performing with the pressure piled on for the final stage, grabbing 3rd and her first ever podium appearance at the EWS against the Elite women's field. With new faces battling at the front of each round this year, this is the most competitive women's field the EWS has ever seen.

The men behind Martin Maes would swap positions back and forth throughout the day with Eddie Masters falling back and Jesse Melamed getting into the mix after a win on stage six. Martin and Adrien Dailly would pad their leads for first and second, but it would be Jose Borges who was putting on the pressure for the final podium spot. As the saying goes, "it's never over 'til it's over," and today that would ring true for Adrien Dailly who went down on the final stage to slide back to fourth. The mistake allowed Jesse Melamed to grab the final podium spot behind Jose Borges and a still undefeated Martin Maes.

Isabeau and Martin now carry commanding leads with nothing but wins across the board at the first three rounds, as the EWS takes a month off before picking up again in some big mountains with rounds in France and Italy.

Yeahhhh Borges! Also local Legend Emanuel Pombo on 10th place! legendary day for portuguese mountainbiking with two top 10 in a EWS event! and now, it's time for PONCHA! ahhahahahahah congrats you legends!

Congratulations for our EWS100 local rider Pedro Silva that made a 16Âş place overall among the pros !! chainless on ss7 and with a flat tire on ss8 ..

 @diogocamacho: wtf??? ganda Pedrinho!
  • 7 0
@diogocamacho: Yep! what about a bit coverage to the non pro riders? why not showing at least top three results...
  • 11 7
@Trealairborne: you mean the amateurs? You want us to cover the amateurs who started two hours earlier and where literally one or two stages ahead of the top men and women all day long? And skip the best riders in the world during one of only 8 premium world class ews events ? Makes total sense to me too ;-) maybe we try that next round and see what people have to say.
  • 10 4
@davetrumpore: We know that it is impossible, even for those who just watching the race it is impossible.. But at least some mention on timing article.. An amateur rider beat top 20 pros with a flat tire and chainless, doing 4th in some stages.. For me the best Portuguese racer, considering that he is amateur
  • 9 3
@diogocamacho: I can understand your enthusiasm for a fellow local rider and a great result. But the amateur race is a completely separate event and nearly impossible to keep on our radar during the pro race which will always be the primary focus at any EWS event.
  • 1 0
@davetrumpore: I'm from Madeira and also a fan of Pedro's, but even so I can understand why this doesn't get mentioned here. EWS100 is cool but who is interested on the results other than the local fans and such. I completly understand why it doesn't get coverage like the main race.
I also don't understand why was Pedro on EWS100...he has the skills to deliver good results on the mais race. Let's not forget he already won a Portuguese Downhill Cup this season beating the portuguese favorites and the world cup champion Amaury Pieron.
He is still young, maybe the next time he competes on an EWS event, he will get a wild-card to race against the top riders.

Do my eyes decive me or has Isabeau committed a heinous crime against enduro fashion by wearing a backpack? And if that were not bad enough; let me be the first to call for a full scale inquiry as to how she could dominate a weekend of racing with such a capacity and capability inhibiting device attached to her back.
  • 2 0
Lots of EWS racers ride with a backpack or at least a hydration pack. Not sure if they still do it, but many of the GT team including Martin Maes used to ride with the bladder integrated in their back protection (Alpinestars, in their case). Others wear a pack with the bladder low. The complaint of many about the sweaty back doesn't really hold anymore if you're wearing backprotection anyway.

It all depends on how much you need to drink and when can you do it. If you have one not too long climb to do at high temperature, you may survive with what you can fit in the frame and in the fanny (pun not indented!) but if you have 2-3h ahead of climbing without possibility to refill, possibly with a few more climbs to go after the desxent, you need a backpack. If it’s 35C or hotter, you need a backpack too to store 1-1,5L. Fanny is already a bad idea if you want a litre of water in it. I draw the line at 0,5l bouncing in there. Some also want a backpack as back protection. You won’t make it for 2 days of racing if you dehydrate yourself in the middle of it. Your muscles and head hate it. Enduro jokes out of the window when shit hits the fan. But if I am off for an afternoon 1,5-2h ride in mellow temperatures I won’t even take a fanny.

@dobermon: Could you explain what you're going on about? Pro athletes choose what works best for them, you're setting an age limit?
  • 1 0
Also those very slack seat angles. What's going on with that? Surely those bikes are crap and no-one should buy those, let alone ride one uphill.

Quite a few of them run backpacks under jersey’s to display jersey sponsors. Quite the pro look but kind of deceiving.

Something cool about enduro is that, since it's really just "mountain biking", we probably are very familiar with the next big name, we just dont know it. Martin Maes was 21 last year when he really put his name on the map while Hill was 30 when he transitioned over. Whether it's a junior racer, a DH vet or even an XC racer, we are probably very familiar with the next few champions already.. we just don't know it's them quite yet.

hi, can someone answer that question - which I am never sure about - do the riders get shuttled part or all - or do they cycle up all the 2500m of heigt difference...which would be a lot...
  • 4 0
Riders were shuttled up to the start to begin Day 2 (stage 4 only)... All off day 1 and from stages 4-8 they were pedaling up and had no chance to visit pits for mechanic assistance.

He had them on both elbows when he crashed ... So maybe he just had a big crash in some extremely sharp rocks. On day 2 he wore one because the other didn't fit over the bandage and stitches
  • 3 1
@davetrumpore: Yeah, time for a PB elbow protection group test! I feel that even though all other protection progressed and got much more comfortable and safer over the years, elbow protection is still a bit behind. Maybe because it doesn't get the attention from the media so there is less incentive for the manufacturers. My hard shell protection (Dianese) does take the hits but it also catches a lot of debris in the process that eventually rubs away the skin from my arms. What riders wear these days (if they wear elbow padding in the first place) does seem more comfortable and snug but maybe it just isn't up to the impact. I'd argue the elbows often take bigger (and more awkward) hits than the knees do. The most effective approach I find now is to wear a long sleeve MX jersey over the pads to avoid them picking up debris. Obviously this is way too hot for summer conditions for a guy like me who rides in a T-shirt at temperatures down to 0degC. Also, it obviously looks way too pro Wink . Now we're at it, maybe when PB does a rain jacket group test again (note for when it is time to do that again), it would be cool if they could also test how well they work with elbow protection.
