The Complete Guide to the 2023 World Cup XC Teams

Feb 10, 2023 at 7:46
by Ed Spratt

It's been a busy off-season of team rumors with big changes for 2023 and beyond. Now that the UCI has released its XC team lists, we can take a look at all the team moves and try to anticipate what the 2023 World Cup race season might bring.

Alpecin-Deceuninck
Ceylin Del Carmen Alvarado, Ronja Eibl, Sam Gaze, Jente Michels, Puck Pieterse, Mathieu Van Der Poel, Niels Vandeputte

The Alpecin-Deceuninck remains mostly the same for 2023 with big hitters like Sam Gaze, Puck Pieterse and Mathieu Van Der Poel sticking with the team for another season. We could see the return of Mathieu Van Der Poel to World Cup racing as he announced a mountain bike sabbatical last year. Mathieu will most likely return to XC at some point in 2023 as he builds up to the Olympics next year.
Puck Pieterse couldn t match Line Burquier today but would take home the silver medal.

Caloi Henrique Avancini Racing
Henrique Avancini, Ulan Bastos Galinski, Caina Guimaraes De Oliveira, Sabrina Oliveira Da Silva

After departing the Cannondale team last year Henrique Avancini has moved to his own development team supported by one of the largest bike producers in Latin America, Caloi bikes. the 100% Brazillian team will see Henrique race alongside Ulan Galinski, Sabrina Oliveira and Cainã Oliveira.

Cannondale Factory Racing
Charlie Aldridge, Simon Andreassen, Alan Hatherly, Mona Mitterwallner

After Henrique Avancini's departure, the Cannondale Factory team has kept Simon Andreassen, Alan Hatherly and Mona Mitterwallner while also picking up Charlie Aldridge. Charlie is a rapid up-and-coming young racer who won the Junior XC World Champs title at Mont-Sainte-Anne in 2019, took 3rd in the U23 World Cup at Lenzerheide last year and was potentially on track for a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth games before a last lap mechanical.
Mona Mitterwallner climbed her way back into 7th.

Canyon CLLCTV
Line Burquier, Thibaut Francois, Thomas Griot, Zabdiel Adair Gutierrez Prieto, Loana Lecomte, Withen Albert Philipsen, Luca Schwarzbauer

The Canyon CLLCTV team remains an incredibly strong force on the XC circuit with Line Burquier, Loana Lecomte and Luca Schwarzbauer all securing great results in 2022. The team will be looking to build upon this success as it heads into its second season of racing.
Loana Lecomte chasing hard after Pauline Ferrand Prevot.

Ghost Factory Racing
Caroline Bohé, Nicole Koller, Finja Lipp, Isla Short, Anne Terpstra, Jeroen Van Eck

The Ghost Factory Racing team has seen a slight shuffle over the winter as Scottish racer Isla Short has been signed after running her own program for several seasons. The Ghost team are looking like a formidable force in the Elite Women's racing and we expect some top results once racing kicks off later this year.

Giant Factory Off-Road Team - XC
Alexandre Balmer, Antoine Philipp, Jens Schuermans, Carter Woods

The Giant Factory team sees only one returning rider for 2023 as Antoine Philipp is joined by a strong lineup of Alexandre Balmer, Jens Schuermans and Carter Woods.
photo

Ineos Grenadiers
Pauline Ferrand Prevot, Thomas Pidcock, Ben Tulett, Ben Turner

2023 is looking like a big year for the Ineos Grenadiers. After just featuring the talent of Thomas Pidock in past seasons the team has been increased to four riders for 2023 with the headline addition being the concurrent four-time World Champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot. The Ineos team has also added Ben Tulett and Ben Turner. Both Bens have secured some impressive results across road and cyclocross racing and it looks like they could be taking on some XC World Cups.
Tom Pidock with some work to do early in the race to reach the front of the pack.

KMC MTB Racing Team
Yana Belomoina, Martins Blums, Oleksandr Hudyma, Lotte Koopmans, Janika Loiv, David Nordemann, Ole Sigurd Rekdahl

The CST PostNL Bafang MTB Racing Team is no more as it gets rebranded for 2023 as the KMC MTB Racing Team. Along with the name change, there have been some departures and fresh faces for the new season. The team has seen Anne Tauber and Kjell Van Den Boogert depart but it has signed Janika Loiv. The team will also be riding Ridley bikes for this year as the team has already set its sights on the Olympics next year.
photo

Lapierre Mavic Unity
Sebastian Fini Carstensen, Malene Degn, Erik Haegstad, Annie Last, Thomas Litscher, Isaure Medde

After an 11-year hiatus Lapierre is back racing at World Cups with the newly formed Lapierre-Mavic Unity team. Filling out the roster on the Lapierre-Mavic Unity team is Malene Degn, Annie Last, Isaure Medde, Sebastian Fini Carstensen, Thomas Litscher and Erik Haegstad.
photo

Orbea Factory Team
David Domingo Campos Motos, Pierre De Froidmont, Luca Martin, Anne Tauber

Orbea also has a new factory team setup for 2023 as it plans to take on both World Cups and stage races. The team features Anne Tauber, Pierre de Froidmont and David Campos in Elites with Luca Martin taking on the U23 races.
photo

Primaflor Mondraker Genuins Racing Team
Francesc Barber Arguimbau, Marta Cano Espinosa, Ondrej Cink, Rebecca Henderson, Jose Marquez Granados

A few changes for the Primaflor Mondraker Genuins Racing Team in 2023 as it loses Jofre Cullell Estape but Ondrej Cink is a fresh signing. Interestingly this will be a return to Mondraker for Ondrej as the Primaflor–Mondraker–Rotor team was his first team after returning to XC following racing on the road and tackling the Tour de France in 2017.
Rebecca McConnell finally gets that first World Cup win.

Rockrider Racing Team
Mathis Azzaro, Savilia Blunk, Emeline Detilleux, Joshua Dubau, Maxime Marotte, Olivia Onesti, Greta Seiwald

The Rockrider team is stacked for 2023 picking up Mathis Azzaro, Savilia Blunk, Maxime Marotte, Olivia Onesti and Greta Seiwald in the winter. It looks like Rockrider has some big plans for its XC team and bikes and we are interested to see how they can compete with the other big factory teams.
photo

Santa Cruz RockShox Pro Team
Martina Berta, Luca Braidot, Nadir Colledani, Sara Cortinovis

After losing Maxime Marotte to the Rockrider team, the Santa Cruz RockShox Pro Team roster sees some shuffling for 2023. This year's team features Martina Berta, Luca Braidot, Nadir Colledani and Sara Cortinovis. The only big change we can see is the title sponsors changing from FSA to RockShox. In past seasons the team was on Fox suspension so we will likely see some fresh bike builds from the team once racing kicks off.
photo

Scott-SRAM MTB Racing Team
Filippo Colombo, Kate Courtney, Andri Frischknecht, Nino Schurter

There's more seat swapping as the Scott-SRAM team parted ways with Lars Forster to bring another rapid Swiss racer on board. Filippo Colombo has joined the team for his off-road racing duties while he will also be racing on the road with the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, a UCI ProTeam. Kate Courtney, Andri Frischknecht and Nino Schurter are all back for another flat out season of racing.
That s 10 World Championship titles for Schurter.

Specialized Factory Racing
Haley Batten, Christopher Blevins, Sina Frei, Victor Koretzky, Laura Stigger, Martin Vidaurre Kossmann

Specialized's XC race team features two new riders in 2023 as Victor Koretzky and Martin Vidaurre are added to the roster. Martin Vidaurre will be taking on his first Elite season following a very successful 2022 World Cup series where he won all but one race. Victor Koretzky is another two-team cross-discipline rider as he will be with Specialized for XC duties and the Bora Hansgrohe team for road racing.
Laura Stigger leads the field up the first climb the young Austrian keen to make an impression on home soil.

Team 31 Ibis Cycles Continental
Linn Gustafzzon, Jenny Rissveds, Kelsey Urban

No changes to the roster for Team 31but alongside Ibis it has picked up Continental as a title sponsor. It seems a lot of teams are swapping around tires over the winter with both Continental and Pirelli securing more teams than previous years.
Jenny Rissveds is a top candidate when it comes to XCC. She ll be in the mix this evening without a doubt.

Team BMC
Janis Baumann, Titouan Carod, Steffi Häberlin, Jordan Sarrou, Juri Zanotti

BMC has launched a revamped team for 2023. The new factory team features Steffi Häberlin, Jordan Sarrou, Titouan Carod, Juri Zanotti and Janis Baumann in its ranks. The updated team brings on new sponsors for the upcoming season with Öhlins suspension and Pirelli tires. Interestingly Julian Absalon now has no connection with the team after previously being involved in the Absolute Absalon and later named BMC MTB Racing teams.
photo

Thömus Maxon
Vital Albin, Mathias Flückiger, Lars Forster, Alessandra Keller, Kathrin Stirnemann, Luke Wiedmann

The Thömus Maxon team stays mostly the same for 2023 although it has picked up another fast Swiss rider as it has brought Lars Forster on board. The team will be hoping for more success in 2023 and Alessandra Keller will be looking to build upon an incredibly successful 2022 where she won both the XC and XCC overall titles.
Alessandra Keller getting a bit wild on one of the main descents.

Trek Factory Racing XC
Riley Amos, Anton Cooper, Vlad Dascalu, Gwendalyn Gibson, Madigan Munro, Jolanda Neff, Evie Richards

The Trek Factory Racing team has picked up Gwendalyn Gibson for 2023 after five years with the Norco team. Gwendalyn has an amazing season in XCC Short track last year with a bronze medal at World Champs, a win at Snowshoe and 2nd place at Mont Sainte Anne. The team has also changed from Bontrager tires to Pirelli for the upcoming season.
Olympic champ Jolanda Neff led the first lap but would slip back to 5th with a few mistakes.

I need to know whether there's gonna be an xc fantasy league in 2023. That 100% dictates how much I care about this article.

Oh god, here we go again…

This article allows those of us who have folloewd this sport for years to have insight on who is on their way out, and who is on their way in, and what teams are actually in the hunt for a world cup win or title or podium win as well as world champs. It also give us insight on how the olympics will be affected . As well las those of us who are fans of particular ridrrs or bike brands to know who will be riding what rigs this season. It also shows anyone from the Unired States just who are the top dogs from the states in this sport as wel as fans of certain riders form certain countries.

 Has Emily Batty retired?
  • 27 5
She's just an instagram bike model now it seems.
  • 4 0
@wilsonians: 350k ig followers and that Porsche contract with Pfaff is probably more interesting than having to race every weekend
  • 5 1
@tgr9: Not knocking her success. Good on her for translating past racing prowess to success off the track. But yeah....she is more of an instagram model/ambassador now than a racer it seems. And yeah, the ability to do what you want, take bike trips etc. sounds way more interesting to me than the grind of a race season.

The Canyon MTB team was not listed with Emily, Jenn Jackson and Laurie Arsenault

Jenn and Laurie each announced on instagram in December that they were leaving the team.

Jenn went to Liv Factory Racing, Laurie went to "Pittstop Racing Team"

Ben Tulett and Ben Turner on some xc races for INEOS could have a big impact.
Tullet is an awesome cyclocross rider (twice junior world champ). He may have the 2024 Paris olympic in mind. If Pidcock is not at the start line, he can win the race... right now.
  • 3 0
Yeah. People may have forgotten that a year before Tokyo, Pidcock had never ridden in a MTB World Cup at all. In fact he'd ridden very few organised XCO races....(U23 Nationals in 2019)

I have no idea of Tulett will be any good, but he did something Tom didn't, and won 2 Junior CX World titles....He's a climber, and could well be suited to XCO.

So, has Emily Batty retired or what?
  • 21 0
Social media is likely more lucrative than finishing 45th at UCI XCO event..

If only Only Fans picked her up

I would say yes, she is no longer listed in UCI MTB riders list.

Scott-sram looks like a good team

I’d argue Trek Factory is more stacked.

Is XCO even a thing if Warner isn’t making the call? I miss the totally biased tunneled view that Freecaster brought to the sport
  • 11 0
 We will all miss Warner

@Southeast-Shredder: we all know our sport is not much "appreciated" worldwide. Even with all that mass watching on the big vueltas, year after year they struggle to get the bills paid. I think that, for those who don´t ride bikes, like us, is a pain in the ass to see 3-4 hours of road bikes, or 1:20 hour of XCO, where "nothing happens" and we have 5 to 10 tops fight for positions. Even F1 is strugling with this past decades. As I replied other post regarding bike prices vs motorbikes prices, we are in a niche. How are you going to watch thru WBD there? We are stil not sure how we will here.

One of the more interesting moves on a human level is Lars Forster leaving Nino Schurter's Scott SRAM team to join Mathias Flückiger's Thomus team. Is it a picking of sides? Did he not get on with Nino? Or is simply that was the slot that was going and bills have to be paid?
  • 1 0
Lars kept declining each season he was with Scott Sram. HE was in best form the first two seasons with them and won a European title with Scott-Sram, and also one Cape Epic as Nino's partner. But he had injuries and his performance kept geting worse for the most part instead of better. HIs performance atthe Cape Epic last time was aAndri F. and Lars were friends before he joined the team and even traiwful. He looked tired and couldn't keep up with the fastest guys on most of the days, especially after Nino put forth such A hstrong effort to tryto make up ground after suffering two flats on the first stage out. that wore Lars out and he never recovered. Andri F. the teams manger's son, knew Lars and trained together with him when Lars was still with BMC. Lars and the team had no falling out. He simply was performing less and less consistantly and not showing signs of improvement. Scott -Sram did well to pick up Filippo Colombo , as he is a very young and very talented rider to build up for the team's future. He's also Swiss so that helps the chemistry as well. Already at the Stellenbosch Cape xco race on February 5th, the Scott team took 1st, 2nd , and 3rd , which is pretty tough to do even though it was not a very deep field. There were people there who certainly had the potential to snag one or even two of the podium spots. It will be interesting to see how Colombo develops with Scott-Sram. I seriously doubt whether Lars will have better results at Thomus Racing. I hope he does as he's a genuine nice fellow and gets along with everyone pretty well. Thomas F. wrote a nice goodbye statement concerning Lars too. With Mathias Fluckiger 's ban lifted, it should be interesting to see these two teams race each other but I only see Scott being the stronger team .Mathias comes back after the ban ranked 24th whereas he was ranked number 3, so a third row starting postion instead of a front row position for at least the first world cup he enters.

Would love a breakdown of who's going to be good this year and what riders to watch.
  • 2 0
If Mathieu Van Der Poel comes back to XCO as expected, he will be a very high contender no doubt, as he has appeared very strong in cyclocross so far this season. Tom Pidcock on the Grenediers team, probably will be right up there with Mathieu Van Der Poel, and I wouldnt be surprised if Mathias Fluciger is in the top 5 after aa few outings. Filipo Colombo , a new member of Scotand of course Nino, Scott Sram should have some very good results. If last years results are any indication of this year, watch a guy on BH racing squad, and the tallest guy out there I believe, his name is David Serrano . I think he won a bronze at the olympics and last world cup season he has finished number 2 to Nino and maybe had one win, or two second place finishes I can't remeber exactly. Other riders to certainly watch in the men's elite class are Victor Koretsky, Sam Gaze, Ondre Cink, Of course Alan Hatherly from South Africa on Cannondale, Vital Albin, who performed well on a few outings last year, Sebastian Fini will be up there too I think. There's my list of men I think will be being consistantly and at the front of the pack at the end. I have some opinoins about the womens field as well and if you like I could share those with you if I havent bored you to death here.

@Xcmtberbill: Don’t forget Vlad Dascalu, he will 100% win a World Cup if he is in the same shape as last year
  • 1 0
@Xcmtberbill @laupe Awesome!!! Thank you! Would love to know more about the women's side. I only know the usual suspects.
  • 1 0
@sevensixtwo: In the women’s field there are now many capable of winning. If Pauline ferand prevot has kept her form from last year, it will be hard stopping her from dominating this year. I hope evie richards is fully recovered from her back problems, so she can win som races, like in 2021. Others to look out for, who can win races are loana lecomte, Jenny rissveds, Anne terpstra, Alexandra Keller. Mona mitterwalner is probably looking at her first World Cup win, if she can have a clean race
  • 1 0
@laupe: It sounds like Neff and Courtney are not contenders anymore. Prevot is a beast.
  • 1 0
@sevensixtwo: I wouldn't count out Neff, she is olympic champion and won a WC last year, but i think she needs some luck to win. Courtney is slowly working her way up in the ranks, will be interesting to see if she can win some WC races

This would be such a cool article if they also included the team bikes

The Trek team not using Bontrager tires is a pretty surprise to me consider how the Trek stores in my area are stocked.
  • 1 0
Yeah, I agree completely as that's their house brand. But I have heard some great things about the Pirellis ( spelling?)
and look forward to see how they do, since they are gonna be on more riders' bikes this season. Also, Continental is pushing their tires . Julian Absalon used Contis and it got him world championships. I'm not sure if he got all 5 of his world championsships on Contis or not though. The conti race Kings have a very ow rolling reistnce too. Im not sure why they have been out of the forefront of racing the past 7 or so seasons. Would be interesting to find out why but I know Maxxis brand is everywhere and Nino's success with them propelled the brand to the stratosphere. Variety makes the racing more interesting in my opinion, so I'm stoked to see some changes even in tires used.
  • 1 0
@Xcmtberbill: with you on all of that. Right or wrong, I think of MTB brands in pairs:
Maxxis or Schwalbe
Shimano or SRAM
Fox or Rockshox

Obviously there are more choices, but those are the dominant ones and it’d be nice to get a few more options on equal footing.

Also I just got some Pirelli tires for my g***** bike. I haven’t mounted them up yet, but they *seem* great.
  • 1 0
lol I thought so to when i saw the photo. Not too excited about their kit maybe? They do have some members who could pull off some podiums on a very good day though. Anna Tauber leaving kind of surprised me. but she is with Orbea amd maybe the change will do her good. She came so close to winning a world cup a few years back. I m not sure of her age, but I hope she can win one at least before she retires. she is interesting in a simpel and honest way when they interviw her after a race.

Of the top teams, seems like we see a lot of them have rosters of 5-6+. Whereas for DH you have a lot of top teams that are 3-4. Curious as to the alignment there and what dictates it? Less U23 riders on big DH teams? Based on the survey results, I dont think XC is getting paid THAT much more except a few riders so is it just less expensive to run a team? Do XC teams have larger budgets etc.

I suspect that globally, xco is way bigger, more meny than DH

@Madfella: XC gets tens of thousands of fans turning out to watch, downhill not even close in most cases.

Nino has been in the sport long enough to see him become the villain, he needs to be careful not to throw another tantrum. Love the guy but Pidcock and Flueckinger's presence shoudnt bother him mentally otherwise he is done.

I was confused to not find Rebecca McConnell, but I guess she‘s now „Rebecca Henderson“ after splitting up with Dan, correct? Smile

I saw her listed as Bec Henderson in the Australian nationals this past weekend, wondered what was up with that.

Nino is an athletic beast, still competing at the highest level at age 37. I wonder if he'll make it to the 2024 olympic team?

I'd love to see Nino notch another WC win to break the tie with Absalon.

He has a contract with Scott until 2025, so we will see him race the 2024 Olympics

Canyon CLLCTV Line Burquier, Thibaut Francois, Thomas Griot, Zabdiel Adair Gutierrez Prieto, Loana Lecomte, Withen Albert Philipsen, Luca Schwarzbauer The Canyon CLLCTV team remains an incredibly strong force on the XC circuit with Line Burquier, Loana Lecomte and Luca Schwarzbauer all securing great results in 2022. The team will be looking to build upon this success as it heads into its second season of racing.

with Canyon, sad to see Massi as a middle team, I had high hopes Ulloa would help the team stay on top, after Lacomte left.

Lecompte is with Canyon still. They aren't going to giver her up without a fight. She'll definatey be on the hunt this season.
