Following a strong 2017 season that saw its riders compete in a variety of off-road disciplines, all around the world, the Giant Factory Off-Road Team is currently preparing for 2018. This year the team welcomes back the heart of its roster, including two national champions. It will also have some new equipment sponsors as it continues its mission to develop cutting-edge race bikes and technologies.

Returning to lead the downhill unit is seven-time Colombian downhill national champion Marcelo Gutierrez. Gutierrez is joined by another national champion, Jacob Dickson of Ireland, along with American Eliot Jackson. These three DH riders will focus on World Cups and other major events on their Glory Advanced race bikes. The downhill squad is coming off a strong season that saw Gutierrez land two World Cup podiums and win the Garbanzo DH event at Crankworx Whistler for the fifth year in a row.

“My 2017 season started and finished well,” Gutierrez said. “This year I’m aiming to start strong again and improve my consistency throughout the season. I’m also looking forward to some new challenges, including racing a few enduro events. The one I’m most excited about is the Enduro World Series event in my hometown of Manizales, Colombia. It’s going to be interesting training for both disciplines.”

The 20-year-old Dickson had a breakout season in 2017, earning his first DH national championship in the elite category and scoring some impressive finishes on the World Cup circuit including a top-10 at the Mont-Saint-Anne round in Canada.

“I had a solid first season with the team last year and was really happy to get my first national championship in the elite ranks,” Dickson said. “For this year I hope to be consistently in the top-20 and hopefully on some podiums.”

The enduro squad also sees the return of some familiar faces. Australian Josh Carlson and Canadian Mckay Vezina will again focus on Enduro World Series events. Both had to battle through some injuries this year, but still posted several strong stage finishes. Each is looking forward to racing the 2018 season on their Reign Advanced race bikes in good health and top form. Joining those two is Rae Morrison of New Zealand, who is also part of Liv Cycling’s extensive roster of global riders, racing her Liv Hail Advanced bike at EWS and other major enduro events.

Josh Carlson returns to the team’s enduro racing squad in 2018. Despite missing the first two races of the 2017 Enduro World Series due to the birth of his second child, as well as having to overcome some injuries, he finished the year with solid results. In addition to the global riders, the 2018 Giant Factory Off-Road Team also includes a group of North American regional athletes led by veteran XC racer Carl Decker. Those racers will focus on a variety of major enduro, XC and gravel racing events in North America aboard their Anthem, XtC and TCX race bikes. Joining Decker on the regional squad are XC racers Stephan Davoust and Cole Paton, plus enduro racer and BMX Olympic medalist Mike Day.

On the technical front, the team welcomes several key new partners for 2018, including Maxxis tires, Shimano drivetrain and brake components, and PRO cockpit components. Other key components and gear will include Giant WheelSystems, Giant Contact saddles and the Giant NeosTrack GPS computer. On the apparel side, the team will once again partner with 100% for DH and enduro race kits, eyewear and full-face DH helmets.

Giant will supply XC race kits, as well as enduro and XC helmets, including the Rail, Rev and Pursuit models, along with footwear including the Charge XC shoe, the Line enduro shoe and the Shuttle DH shoe.

Details on all the team’s riders, sponsors and gear—including a new suspension supplier— will be announced later this year, before the start of the World Cup DH and Enduro World Series race season.

So having shimano as a components sponsor opens the door for DVO suspension??
  • 9 0
I would imagine so as they don't list suspension, I really hope it's DVO so Ronnie's cheeseburger can go road tripping with the team!!!! Or X-Fusion maybe?

No suspension sponsor listed definitely points to a pending announcement.

@dwojo: also the fact that the article says an announcement will be made later in the year

@treymotleyDH: someone can read! Looks like you're the only one though!

@jaame: you dont actually think people read the article, right?

@whattheheel: maybe Claudio can interview it?!

I saw Marcelo's bike a few days ago here in manizales and had a rear shock DVO

Does Giant, also, make a DH slipper for Eliot?

Giant wheels, guess they go 29" for 2018

 A step back. . . . . .

 @MX298: how so?
  • 1 0
 Not a bad guess

I hope that new suspension sponsor is a company with 3 letters in the name, starts with a D, and ends with O
  • 2 0
You've lost me. DIO? DAO? DUO? D3O?

 @jaame: D3PO (the 3 is silent)

dvo green and giant blue is a terrible colour combo. i hope dvo keeps it (mostly) black for the team
  • 2 0
@jaycubzz: I was riding with a couple of DVO guys in Taiwan last month and I noticed they were all riding blue reigns with green forks. It's not a good combo. I think the frame in black and green would look rude, like the colour of the defy advanced 1. Alternatively, the forks could be blue. Or even better, the frame could be that bronze colour.

Thought Eliot was off to Santa Cruz...
  • 5 0
Elliot himself said that wasn’t happening, in reply to many speculations after pics of him being at end of year celebrations and some IT stuff

They must love carlson as he has had no results i the last couple of years. Time for some new blood?
  • 2 0
I read somewhere that Giant like loyalty.
  • 3 0
He scored 2 babies. I guess that count!
  • 4 0
Carlson’s had some bad luck. He’s as friendly and approachable as they come though. I’m sure that helps.
  • 2 0
I'd hope that with a team commitment to Shimano, the bikes in the shops will be rid of the total saturation of SRAM crap, and in particular, Avid brakes.
  • 1 1
It's most probably going to be DVO. It's also probably going to include a huge OEM spec change for Giant's top-of-the-line offerings, hence the delay. The press release will likely affect all the top end variants of the Anthem, Trance, Reign, and Glory, in addition to their Liv counterparts.

Eliot Jackson, we need to see more of you on the live WC feed my man!

I’ve got the 2018 trance advanced, it came with Fox, SRAM , truvativ and Giant parts. It’s a very sweet bike!

If Jacob Dickson holds onto a run he's getting a podium

Marcelo is racing the Colombian EWS?
Can't wait to see that!

 All about the giant!

 Giant makes shoes?
  • 1 0
 Yes.
  • 1 0
@nozes: in the same way every shoe brand "makes" shoes. That is, they pay a factory to make shoes with their name on. Not many brands actually make anything these days!
  • 1 0
@jaame: I'm aware of that. The same way bike manufacturers are mostly bike assemblers,as only a few produce their own frames.
  • 2 1
@nozes: yeah it wasn't a reply to you. It was to the one above you
  • 1 4
 Fox suspension??
  • 1 0
Probably no. No Race Face components, which is owned by fox.
  • 5 0
@carym: ask Aaron gwin about that
  • 3 5
@makripper: Gwin is special, he gets what he wants. Something about being number 1.
  • 3 0
@carym: shimano and fox have a hand in hand relation ship on a lot of teams. Shimano also produces fox thru axles.
  • 2 1
@allenfstar: True. They co-devoloped the 15mm axle so that centerlock rotors could continue to be used. 10 years later it looks like centerlock is catching on.
  • 2 0
@carym: no. centerlock works with 20mm as well as 15mm lmao
  • 1 0
@makripper: only after Shimano came up with Saint that would work. Before then 15mm only.
