Video: Greg Minnaar Looking Fast on His New Norco in Pietermaritzburg

by Stefan Garlicki

The second instalment of Swapping Lines, a video series which will see me travelling the world searching for the best tracks with the best riders in mountain biking! I am South African but now based in Munich, Germany. After racing professionally for over a decade with many highs and lows, including 3 elite national titles, a top 25 World Cup result and 2 broken hips with a hip replacement. I am looking for a new challenge and this is it. Episode 2 is set in Pietermaritzburg starring non other than the G.O.A.T and fellow South African, Greg Minnaar!

This was the first time ever riding with Greg so nerves were high as I wanted everything to go smoothly. In the end it was an awesome experience and I had a blast chasing him down the track where he won world champs in 2013! Greg is looking very comfortable on the new Norco which currently he is running as a mullet.

It's so good to have Greg riding for Norco alongside me on my 2018 Aurum. Hopefully I'll be able to give him a few good pointers to help get him up to speed even more quickly.

He's been on the cusp of doing something great for so long, always the 'nearly-guy', the perennial journeyman. I reckon this is going to be what finally gets him into the big leagues @bigtim.

At Greg's young age I suspect he could take any bike whatsoever to nearly exact times - ip or down by amounts only pros could push. That being said, he's got a least 10-15 ore good years in him before having to retire.

The man just does not seem to age. The Kelly Slater of mountain biking.

So is Kelly Slater the Greg Minnaar goat of surfing ?

@rismo68: only if gregg minnaar was the older of the two, which he is not. For slater you would have to reference someone older than him. It's a seniority system for goats.

Remember when Jared Graves raced Pietermaritzburg WC DH on a Yeti SB66 and I think he took a podium spot?

it will always be about the rider not the bike, except for when i am trying to justify a new one.

People were riding Nobby Nic's and dropper post on Dh bikes that pedal section must be a bitch

He also said it was because he'd spent zero time on a DH bike in the previous year or so, not because the SB66 was better suited to the track.

 Long reign the GOAT

Greg would look fast riding a wheelbarrow down the mountain!

Everyone saying how fast Greg looks; where I see the opposite, he's just too smooth and composed to notice really how fast he actually is. unless someone with fast looking ride style is riding along with him.

A cut up video with a '72 Hollies soundtrack is hardly going to convey how fast or slow someone is.

Minnaar could make a shopping cart look fast.

Carts of Darkness, actual documentary but no Greg.

What's up with the Hollies all of a sudden being in vogue? This is like the third video I've seen in the last day or two using this song. (See, for example, Tom Van Steenbergen's insta from this morning).

The Hollies are always in style

Crossing my fingers that Ep3 will involve the GOAT destroying Mystery DH, Jersey Shore, and Meat Sweats

Pietermaritzburg = Morewood! I have a Makulu, an Mbuzi and trying to get a Kalula...

I love how still Minnaar is on the bike and how he lets the bike slip to set up for corners. Could watch it all day. Hope he transitions well to this bike and scores a couple more wins.

Greg looked fast on a Haro M1, what do you expect?

It still makes me strange to see Greg on Fox... ONeal refined more classical line suit him so well.

I consider him more a Alpine Stars and OGK guy.

@yakimonti: the good ol Kabuto days! Yes! Those helmets were rad. I’ll always see him as OGK and Alpinestar

Any word on whether or not he will be running full 29" or mx? Curious to know how his testing went.
  • 1 1
Already said he will run MX
  • 4 1
@patryka: still testing, may opt for 29 Wink

Gambler is the one of the best current DH bikes and certainly the most overlooked. Also maybe the lightest?
  • 1 0
Why aren't there any downhill bikes on the Norco website?
  • 3 0
Because they stopped selling the Aurum, and the new DH bike is under development? I spoke with one of their Engineers last week, and he speculated it may be another year for production models.

All that cash and no NORCO logo on the kit?
  • 2 0
 That was awesome.

Considering Garlickis sponsor, Fapping Lines would've been a better name.
