Death of A Trail

New years day edit in Walnut Creek, CA. All filmed on a Canon 7d at 60p and edited in Adobe After Effects. We were the last ones to ride this trail, as someone called the police and the park ranger at the end of the video shut us down. The trail will be bulldozed 1/3/11. Special thanks to: Zac Myers (norcalassassin) Tanner Stephens (tstep3)

 i call them ranger dicks
just because they drive around parks all day in there trucks and dont get paid much dosnt mean then can mess up our fun....plus wouldnt bulldozing the area cause more harm to the forest area???haha
  • + 5
you couldn't have put it better haha. and yeah pretty much i have a sneaking suspicious that they have no idea what they're doing
  • + 5
haha, we actually nicknamed the guy ranger dickhole gonna look into getting something sanctioned, but I'm not very hopeful, we've got a bike park the next city over thats been delayed for over 2 years...
  • + 3
 wow that blows......im sorry
  • + 7
I Was one of the original and main builders of this trail, It is called Nubian and was started about 15 years ago. I'm sure i have well over 100 hours of trail work done there. It had been hidden away pretty well, but in the last 2-3 years I made a lot of features larger and a more flowy feel to the trail and word got out and spread. There is the cross over single track that the hikers use and it brings them into the valley where the trail was located, unfortunately that trail has become popular as well, used to be that you would only see someone every few months. Dumbass hikers don't realize that the trail they hike on was also largely built by me as well. Unfortunately I always knew that if it got too popular the ranger would be all over it, just the nature of Walnut Creek, everything needs to be sanitized and safe. I am already planning the next trail farther up in the hills/mountain. This ranger sucks just about as much as the chances of getting a "legal" riding spot in Walnut Creek
  • + 3
Respect, man. That trail was epic, sorry that its gone.
  • + 6
I'm always reading about trails being shut down in the U.S...what's up with that? Do you guys have laws against mtb down there? Seriously I find it odd as hell that you guys have to deal with rangers and cops when your in the woods biking.
  • + 1
Well we have a thing called the Open Space Foundation where vast amounts of public land are sanctioned for hiking, picnicking and other things. You can't alter the land in any way because they want to "preserve the land". If you do, which includes riding a bike, you get written a ticket.
  • + 3
Because of the way the law is here, if some idiot falls in the woods they can sue the city and potentially make loads of money. Thats why the cops shut down trails here under the guise of 'environmental protection'. They dont like to admit it, but thats whats going on. You guys are so lucky that you can ride without being hassled.
  • + 9
part of it is that california, especially the bay area=hippyville

weed is more legal than riding here, at least with weed you can get a permit for it
  • + 1
 Haha yeah true that
  • + 7
vod! give the best trail in the east bay a good sendoff!!!

and I'm in it Big Grin
  • + 3
description says trails will be bulldozed 1/3/11...smh...sad day if u ask me...shit like this just bothers me alot,y dont these pricks concentrate and put more time in other things happening out there, heck i usually ride in pleasanton and get hassled alot but when my car got broken into and all my photog gear were taken took these p*gs forever just to respond etc etc....rip to the trail and VOD...SPREAD THIS VID...
  • + 3
thanks alot. Any publicity will help with this video and we're all trying to spread it as far and wide as we can. keep it steezy
  • + 8
 F*** the POLICE
  • + 8
 and park rangers...
  • + 11
and people that snitch and bitch about "illegal" trails
  • + 2
naw mainly hippies and environmentalists FUCK them all
  • + 6
not the cops fault they have to do it its the bitching people
  • + 2
actually bro cops don't tear down trails they have somebody to do that. They are actually the people you want to deal with in the situation of dirt jumps. Just make up a few lies and say you were wearing your helmet and having a good time. They actually don't tear down the trails the city ordinance does.
  • + 1
Yeah, cept it was a park ranger and odds are that around here if the cops find the trail it will get taken out, cos theyre hardasses.
  • + 1
yeah and they apparently have nothing better to do like last night where I live there was 4 cops just chillin in starbucks haha
  • + 2
i know what u mean i got bitched at for building dirt jumps in my backyard and they had to balls to ask do u know who property u are building on even when i went into my garage
  • + 2
LOL cops bitched at you for building in your own backyard? Wtf?
  • + 2
ya it was gay until my mom came out and said stop harassing me and go do their jobs
  • + 2
Good. Thats what they should be doing, besides they had no call to be on your property anyways, what the hell were they doing there?
  • + 3
I live in mendo county every cop thinks ur growing pot it's stupid
  • + 3
Basically. They complain about erosion on that trail, when the surrounding hills without trails have much worse erosion. The area around the trail barely has any because its packed and maintained. Its also a cattle grazing area, so the cows tear up the creek bed and then the rangers blame it on the bikers. Honestly, the dudes who first built these trails years ago really knew what they were doing, theyd give parks and rec a run for their money. Its basically all B.S. because they dont want to admit that its liability theyre worried about.
  • + 2
Exactly. And what i don't understand is why they want to preserve this open space if it's not being used for anything whatsoever.
  • + 3
Duuuuuuude, youre missing the point maaannnn. Its the fluffy animals that our trails are somehow damaging. Like the three-foot-deep six-foot-long foot wide crevaces in the fire trail dont deserve more attention than some well-kept and carefully maintained trails where some kids can have fun riding bikes.
  • + 4
I love how Ranger Dickhole was like "You're harming the brown tailed sparrows (or whatever the f*** they were) by eroding this land!". Oh really? I'm harming birds that live in TREES by riding my bike?
  • + 5
Oh, speaking of that, i have an idea of how we might be able to get them back for this. You know how theyre gonna basically just fill in the trails with dirt? Well, my bet is that first heavy rain after they lay down that dirt its all gonna end up down the hill, in other words they will make the erosion worse. I want to take a few pictures of before and after and see what happens.
  • + 1
 good idea
  • + 2
Take THAT to the commision or whatever it was the ranger was talking about. haha
  • + 1
When I started building here years ago I wanted a good trail but also to not tear up the hills everywhere, minimal environmental impact. There was a lot of stone work as a foundation for berms and jumps, and minimal holes. The trail looked better than what the city and ranger dikhd could or would ever build
  • + 1
Yeah, and I actually made that point to him. The trails there were noticeably better than any of the ones that the city had put in, the drainage was obviously rubbish. He just went on about some regulation that it violated and seemed to think that this meant that the creek was being destroyed by us. I wonder if the federal regulations apply to the cows who were actually trampling the creek as well.....
  • + 3
yeah seriously its ride at your own risk...which means dont do a 25 foot sender if you can hit a 5 foot sender haha.......yeah there should be a clause for sure..or like on a regular mountain that says ride at your own risk in front of like the trails..
  • + 9
Well its not even that. If you go into an area where there is a chance of risk, you should assume the responsibility and acknowledge that you might get hurt if you proceed, whether it be on bike, foot, car, motorcycle, etc. Its just common sense. Then again, common sense isn't common anymore.
  • + 3
yeah i know its like in ucsc...people are able to jog up and down this one trail and is pretty rocky but i cant ride down it?..they have a higher chance of falling then i do...i mean come on!
but yeah i totally know what you mean about the common sence thing...everyone takes everything so literal now......
  • + 2
Its gotten out of hand. Its incredible how far people will go these days to stop people from having places to ride. Are you familiar with the lafayette bike park project?
  • + 2
Its fucking sad what some people do like seriously its all because some fat little kid who cant ride will injure themselves and there parents will start all these lawsuits against the parks board. Like honestly up in Vancouver I know someone who put three years of work into a trail only for it to get leaked by one of his friends little brothers and then they just destroyed it.....
  • + 1
 wow thats f*cked up...
  • + 2
 seriously haha
same with joggers though too(some of them) i ride on a fire trail that says no bikes but there are tire treads everywhere and just about everyday heading home 2 joggers(take it way too seriously) yell at me for riding my bike...its a fire trail..cars drive on it whats the big friken deal????
oh sick edit by the way ha!
  • + 2
yeah its a huge problem. no legal places to ride... all of these legalities make no sense. A car can drive down a road but a bike cant? not fair...
  • + 3
yea dude across the bay on mount tam there is ONE legal piece of singletrack. ONE. and thats only because its in an area that the Marin Water District couldn't get there hands on. The worst part is, horses are allowed on about every bit of dirt in marin county, and they do about twice as much damage as bikes. Dont F*** the police, or rangers, or hippie environmentalists, F**K CLOSE MINDED HATERS
  • + 3
wow that is so stupid....i hope everything is on track now though! just looked over the layout of the landscape and the park looks so sick! im stoked just thinking about it!.......but really...a frog ha
  • + 3
I know right. Ive been off at college for the past semester so ive been kinda out of touch with the most recent progressions, but supposedly its back on track and we are just waiting for some permits i think.
  • + 5
VOD for sure....gotta keep those trails alive
  • + 3
oh thats sick! well i just looked at the clock and i got worked tomorrow haha so happy new year, good luck with the bike park and ride on! peace!!
  • + 3
Thanks bro, happy new year to you too, keep it steezy
  • + 1
If the trail was already made as much as it was i don't understand why the rangers had to take it all down.If they didn't take it all down and were alright right with it being there, that might be the most ridden trail in the whole open space by mountain bikers.Defiantly the best. There are no trails like this in the whole open space that were legalized by the rangers, yet there are thousands of hiking trails that they brag about. If Open Space made a freeride trail like this one that is not as harsh on the environment it would be ridden a lot more than any other trail like people commenting on this video. plus this would be the only legal trail like this in the east bay made specifically for this type of riding.I think most of us should try to get on the good side of rangers instead of sitting at or computers insulting them and making it less likely for us to ever have a freeride trail in the open spaces. If any of want to make a free ride trail like this one we would all have to tell the rangers themselves and make this trail a planned out one instead of separate groups making small trails that all end up getting closed and making it less likely for us to make a legit and legal trail.
  • + 5
 vod!
  • + 10
VOD considering I put work into this trail to help maintain it and that it was our best trail that we mountain bikers could ride that was in riding distance from where we lived.. some people just dont respect our sport.
  • + 2
 amen. whats your name?
  • + 1
Zac Myers, the last time I rode the trail was around 2 months ago and i think im gonna go out there this weekend and see what happens...ill film it too.
  • + 1
Ah ok I've heard your name around. Well i hope the trail is still there for you when you come out
  • + 1
Massive respect for building that man. Ive heard its been attacked by the rangers before, but obviously not completley destroyed. Sorry to see it go
  • + 1
yea ive put many hours into that trail and theres another one that was being built in the same area and its sad to see them go
  • + 3
I just wrote a letter to the city asking when they're planning on demolishing it... might be able to organize a rally of some sort
  • + 2
very nice, i like the color correction. lucky kid with a 7d
  • + 1
not lucky, hardworking haha. my mommy and daddy didn't buy me a $1900 camera hahaha
  • + 1
 i thought it was 1800...
  • + 1
thats true actually you're right but i had to get a cf card, uv filter, and lens hood so it came out to $1950 for me
  • + 1
 ahh. ok.
  • + 3
Probably walkers or something called the cops, cunts that wat i say.
  • + 2
i got yelled at one time i was riding there but the person didnt even have the balls to confront me. they waited until they were far enough away so i couldnt see them hahaha...... people these days!!
  • + 2
they put logs all over the trail cut out the step up and landing shaved down the hip and only messed up the last jump a little
  • + 2
oh yeah, putting logs everywhere wont hurt cattle or block drainage or anything....we should go build a bunch of doubles out of those logs
  • + 1
ya but the jumps are pretty bad last time they tore them down it was only the lower section and the last jump of the top. idk if they tore down the top
  • + 2
the ranger said that they were gonna fill in the trail itself up top
  • + 1
damn this sucks. but jonky just let me know about that new trail your planning because i know alot of people that would be willing to help make some new trails to ride in Walnut Creek
  • + 1
id be willing to help but we can probably bring this trail back it wasnt to bad when i saw it
  • + 4
VOD this trail was so fun to ride RIP WC trails
  • + 3
damn chase. nice edit. never got to ride it but always sad to see a trail go. VOD
  • + 2
 thanks for the VOD man
  • + 1
The rangers in walnut creek open space are the biggest dicks. they kick us out if they see us riding any singletrack and if they even see you with shovels they bitch about it
  • + 4
thanks to all the people saying VOD, gonna miss this trail...
  • + 3
Amen, good times were had there....we didnt even shoot on all the sections. We missed the top part, the horseshoe, the drop, the huge table in the middle, and the step ups.
  • + 1
told you we should've filmed going up not down lol
  • + 2
yeah, true i guess....it would have been too late anyhow because he was on his way up
  • + 2
 ranger dickhole...
  • + 2
yea I know... well, we got a good edit out of it... sigh... guess its cinderella from here on out...
  • + 3
 wow thats b.s.
ask the little shits for proof or photos of the "endangered" species and not fake reports or sightings.
  • + 3
Well they didnt need any proof, just the allegation meant the project was held back a year.
  • + 3
VOD ! now everybody can watch this video an think about how it was to ride ther !
*thumbs up*
  • + 2
 thanks.... RIP Walnut Creek Trails
  • + 2
yeah cause now i little scratch on some kids leg the parents can sue because their little kid got "hurt".....its becoming really annoying now
  • + 3
Yeah, its pretty ridiculous. The bikers would never sue (at least they themselves wouldnt) but the little kids and their parents who stumble across it...different story. I think there should just be a clause that says if you proceed into a dangerous-looking area in a park, then its your own fault when you get hurt.
  • + 1
i broke my wrist on this trail and i even think about sueing but my parents wont let me ride here any more
  • + 1
 ahh that sucks
  • + 1
ya this is the trail that got me into riding too but ive found other ones around
  • + 2
damn i was trying to ride this trail too, its called like underground or something either way RIP man
  • + 3
Lol its been around for so long that there were quite a few names for it
  • + 3
yeah my buddy rode it a few times but hes in the coast guard now so there was no one to show me where it was. But looks like I won't be riding it now.
  • + 2
He's got a movie on the way, these are just the preview clips. Gonna be sick!
  • + 2
i just checked the lower section of the trail it was pretty destroyed
  • + 3
im sharing it on fb too if u guys dont mind...
  • + 1
that would be great! could i have a link to your post? curious to see the feedback
  • + 1
i'll pb message u if anyone says anything
  • + 3
the lafayette bike park project...iv never heard of it
  • + 4
 vod!!!
  • + 1
everybody commenting on this vid should buy a TRAIL BUILDING IS NOT A CRIME sweat shirt
link to a pic: www.pinkbike.com/photo/6823705
  • + 3
 no im not.......whats it about?
  • + 3
Well, a few years ago there was a spot around here that was fairly famous, unsanctioned but nobody did anything about it. One day the city came in and destroyed the site and angered a large group of bikers in the bay area, who then brought forward a proposal to put in a city-sanctioned bike park in an area of an existing part that was already designated for recreational use. Long story short, it has been delayed for several years now due to people bringing up apparently fictious reports of various endangered species in the area that have stalled the project massively. Look up lafayettebikepark.com.
(I should explain that i have been quite involved with the project, and with alot of the riding/trails around here. I'm Greg Robinson, from the video.)
  • + 3
he was replying to what greg said (dhshredder5)

its the bmx/dj park that they're building in the city over from this trail, its been delayed for well over a year, maybe two, because someone pretty much bullshitted that they saw some endangered frog on the planned site... was going forward smoothly, and a small group of people decided that they were gonna try to stop it.. supposedly its back on track now...
  • + 2
this sucks big donkey balls! now i have to drive all the way out to pacifica or carlmont for a fun freeride trail. shit!
  • + 2
its all gone that sucks this was my favorite trail and right next to my house too
  • + 3
 fill it with wat
  • + 1
thats one of my nightmares...seeing death,I mean a ranger, at the bottom of a trail.
  • + 3
 how did they destroy it?
  • + 3
 VOD
  • + 2
Wow man. You've got a few VOD worthy videos. This being a high nominee Smile
  • + 3
 VOD!
  • + 3
 Travis rules...
  • + 2
 we found him lol
  • + 2
that was sick, rode it today
  • + 2
i think you should still post it haha id watch it
  • + 2
there was a trash bag over the camera so the crinkling was super loud and its hard to make out what he's saying
  • + 2
Did you get fined or something too? Also, song name?
  • + 2
He let us go, but followed us down to his truck took our shovels and followed us out the street
  • + 2
Oh and Monday (Glitch Mob Remix) - Nalepa
  • + 2
Sucks. Atleast you got some great filming in before they closed it down.
  • + 2
Yeah true that. we were about halfway done when he found us though. wish we could've at least finished the last shot. in the very last scene when my friends are walking towards the camera with their bikes, there was a drop in the distance and a huge table a little closer that we were literally like 30 seconds away from shooting when the ranger showed up and I started filming him
  • + 2
Good thinking filming the ranger. It made the end more interesting
  • + 3
Haha yeah i was like oh god please don't notice I'm filming.... I ended up getting a 15 min video of him talking to us but its obviously way too long to post
  • + 2
WTF! happened at the end there
  • + 2
 park ranger came up.
Park ranger: "Hi, how are you?"
Greg: "Good, yourself?"
Park ranger: "Good.."
Greg: "Is there a problem, sir?"
Park ranger: "I don't know... what do you guys think?
  • + 2
yea, i'll believe it when they break ground
  • + 2
 you and everybody else
  • + 3
 soo sry for ur loss
  • + 4
its truly sad. best trails within a 20 mile radius
  • + 3
thanks man this is the first video I've ever made and i would love to see it make vod
  • + 2
 oh haha ok
  • + 1
i hate the fucking rangers they ruin everything
  • + 1
What trail was it near on diablo/ walnut creek open space?
  • + 1
and your lucky. they just kick you off. On diablo its a $400 ticket
  • + 1
Where was this near? As in where in walnut creek open space?
