J-hops are similar to bunnyhops but not quite the same. In a J-hop the front tire is lifted first into a manual and then the front is pushed down to elevate the back... Bunny Hops are both wheels lifted at same time.

That's always been called a "nollie". Taken from skateboarding. Where the hell does the letter "J" come into it? That's just like these younger kids calling bunnyhops "broncos".
Just stick with what it's called.
Just stick with what it's called.

Holy shit! I seriously can't believe this discussion is happening!
Bunny-hop: Pulling the front end of the bike up, jumping off of the rear tire, and leveling out.
Nolie: Pulling the rear end of the bike up, jumping off of the front tire, and leveling out.
This is what it has been for at least the last 20 years. Probably more. Even if you manual first, and then hop..... It's still a bunny-hop. Now you're just doing a manual to bunny-hop, or a "manny to hop". The only place I've ever heard a bunny hop being called a "J hop", is on pinkbike. Does anyone even know what the J stands for? The other thing a bunch of numb nuts on here are calling bunny hops is "Broncos". WTF?
I suppose though, things change. People reinvent things all the time. For instance in skateboarding... Front side, and back side are now reversed from what they were 15 years a go thanks to a very popular video game that managed to get them wrong. If you try and explain it to kids now, they think you're an idiot.
Such as life!

@we-are-138: It's really not that big of a deal at the end of the day but you are wrong. The reason new names get added is to more clearly identify distinct things...such as a bunnyhop and a j-hop. Yes it's just semantics and you figure it out naturally if you ride enough but they are still different. The importance is in the use. J-hops are important in biking as they are more efficient in clearing obstacles than a "bunnyhop" (Which you have wrongly defined above) A bunny hop requires no weight shift from the rear to the front of the bike. You are just "hopping", as the name implies. A J-hop requires a shift of weight from the back to the front. The front is unweighted, lifted, clears the obstacle, then the weight is shifted to the front, elevating the back, allowing you to clear the obstacle with the rear wheel. Were you to try this with a binnyhop the entire bike would need to remain above the obstacle for the entire length of the bike. Far less efficient and time consuming in a DH situation. This is a stupid argument and I feel petty for commenting again. Why bold definitions that you are pulling out of your own understanding and clearly have no research or backing other than your own experience.

@snl1200
Seriously. I'm wrong? As I have defined what a bunny hop is above is what it has been for the past 30 years I have been riding a bike. Not until (quite literally this month) have I ever even heard of the word "J-hop". Think about it idiot. Have you ever seen a bunny hop? Very clearly, you have no clue. The Bunny Hop has been the same for even longer than I have been riding a bike. There's a pretty specific reason a bunny hop is called a bunny hop. When you do a bunny hop (as I have detailed above), you are imitating the specific motions a bunny uses when it hops.
You are right about one thing though. It is a really stupid argument (or discussion as I clearly pointed out). It's not my fault there are purely ignorant people on bikes such as yourself. I really think it's super laughable that you are even making a claim that I am pulling definitions out based on what I think things should be as opposed to what they are. Clearly, any one with half a brain know this is exactly what you are doing.
Still, through your entire bullshit, and completely meaningless rant........ You still have no damn clue what the "J" stands for. So I'm just curious why you think a "J-hop" is a bunny hop, when you don't even have a single clue what it is you're trying to explain.

Easy tiger. No need to name call. I think your wrong on this point but may well be a great person. Sorry my questioning of your definitions evoked so much emotion. Relax. I still think your wrong but really don't care that much. Have a good one. Enjoy elevating your bike and calling it whatever you want and I'll do the same.

You're an idiot. It's not name calling. It's a simple, and an obvious observation. Nothing more as you are trying to make it out to be.
We know you don't care. You pretty much told us that the first time you cared enough to post.

snl1200 = ignorant
Dude, 138 straight up explained exactly why it's called a bunny hop. You said he gave the wrong definition because he just thinks it should be that way. Unfortunately, you have nothing supporting your claim. He gave you true, hard facts. You're choosing to ignore them for whatever reason. Please tell us what the J stands for since you seem to know it all.

PS. Calling someone "an idiot" is "name calling." Do we want to debate that too? Grow up boys. It is possible to talk about this stuff without it becoming a pissing contest. I've explained this twice but the link above should support what I've been saying. What the "J" stands for is inconsequential. HAve a nice night.

id-i-ot [id-ee-uht] noun.
1. Informal . an utterly foolish or senseless person.
No one is calling you names. Just pointing out fact.
Nice video
First off, did you get a load of the guy explaining it?
That was he dumbest thing I've ever seen! Is it me, or do dumbassas run in packs?

Do a bit of research into who Simon Lawton and Lars Sternberg (The instructors of that video) are perhaps before calling them "dumbasses."

The term bunny hop goes back in bmx to 1976.
Jhop, or whatever the f*ck that stands for dates back to 2010.
I see you're still posting meaningless drab. So much for not caring right?
I'm not surprised that some one with so much misinformation is also extremely hypocritical.

As I've also stated. Frontside, and backside in skatebaording used to be reverse of what it is today. This was due to the most famous skateboarder in history not catching that they had them backwards in his video games.
Damn, you new generation kids are like lemmings. You completely ignore history and follow some one based on a name like the Pied Piper.

Proved and backed up what he says based on fact that has historical evidence to back it up.
snl
Takes the word of some (not quite so much) famous XC looking dumbass in lycra who has a total of 5 people out of 1,400 in the span of two years as solid proof that a bunnyhop is in fact not a bunny hop.
snl
you're dumb man. Very, very, very dumb.
You should go play catch by yourself on the freeway.

I found this under videos related to SNL's masterpiece explanation.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4taRyzmfa4 So that gives you a little bit of an idea where that video is grouped.

lol 22 replies to my comment about what a j-hop, bunny hop, manny-hop, bronco (lol wtf), nolie is. who gives a shit.

I got the ultimate proof that it is actually, like we-are-138 said, only called Bunny-hop for real
It is so simple, go to youtube and type in jhop 180 or bronco 180 or rabbit-hop 180 or whatever kinda stupid name you invented
There is no video to that explaining a bunny hop 180 -> result: all other names are reinvented lies
Bunny-Hop is and will be the only truth

I think you're waaaay of man. If it were like an Ollie, then it would simply be called a bunny hop.
