When we made
From Where We Stand, we set out to accomplish a few things. We wanted to showcase beauty in unexpected places. We wanted to give a voice to the people who have made it their life's mission to provide riders with a trail experience that is unique to their region. Above all else, we wanted to encourage people to ride their bikes and to seek out adventure in their own backyards. The world has a massive and growing list of destination and bucket list trails and it's important to explore places far from home to get a taste of what the rest of the world has to offer. But it's also important to remember that you don't always have to drive half a day or fly across to country to experience something new.
From Where We Stand was never about showing off or making an "
East Coast vs. West Coast" statement. It was about giving the people and communities who see mountain biking as a viable means to improve their respective regions a chance to say their piece.
Riders and trail builders from Oneonta, New York, Reading, Pennsylvania, Newark, Delaware and Vernon, New Jersey did that throughout the series in an eloquent and inspired fashion. I would encourage you to go and check it out episode by episode if you haven't already or maybe revisit the series with that in mind; because this edition is a bit different and it's just for Pinkbike. Watch as Neko and Logan Mulally, Jeff Lenosky, George Ryan, Paul Dotsenko and others get busy in this action-centric edit. Sometimes, you just want to watch some riders getting rowdy on their bikes and I don't blame you. Enjoy!
Because it's not "Geology - On the Blue" as it's written at the end
And great video by the way, very inspiring. This is what riding is supposed to be
It's simple really... these guys never thought to include anything south of PA yet titled this thing East Coast instead of North East. That's it.
That said, I've ridden on the west coast and Whistler as well as a good number of places around here. I think all those places in the film are the 5h1t! But the choice words do everything south of PA no justice what so ever simply by failing to mention it. By saying nothing, it doesn't exist to anyone from the west coast.
A short list of killer spots?
Snowshoe / Timberline / Danville / Beech Mtn / Asheville / Rocky Nob / Dark Mountain / Windrock / TTC / Racoon Mtn / Clemson / Paris / Fontana / Big Creek / Hilltop Bike Park.
There's even a Southern Super D series this year!
Places like TTC are still shuttling and riding this time of year (in between ice storms).
So no hate from me. I just really wish the makers had considered saying North East instead of East.
Are you one of the makers catfish? If yes, no malice intended.
That's why I was saying "not hater's hatin'" because I think the general attitude toward the whole east coast is that it is lift access stuff only, and they're just trying to build awareness, because we're in the middle of a lot of land use battles and stuff up here that people out west went through long ago, and having more riders using the trail networks and building up the lobbying base would be key. Part of it is also, much like NW and SoCal, you have the regional crews that are all about their zone. However, they did name it "From Where We Stand" and not "Raddest Spots on the East Coast" or something, and even go so far as to say it wasn't meant to be and East Coast vs West Coast thing, kind of saying that they're not taking credit for the whole east coast, but rather showcasing what is in their particular region, which happens to be the north east.
On a South East note, I had no idea you guys had such amazing riding (again, we all get focused on what we know a bit too much) until a few years back when I was in the hospital for almost a year and the only way I had to "ride" (or snowboard or surf for that matter) was through a laptop screen and I found this hilarious thread about the Pisgah gnome game and it totally opened my eyes. Crazy too, because before I got sick I had worked at the Wintergreen Festival IN the Blue Mt's and with Roanoke Symphony and drove home THROUGH the Blue Mts to get to and from each, and even went hiking IN the Blue Mts with one of the donors for the Symphony and still never realized there was a scene there. I was thinking the whole time: "man, these trails would be sooooo sick on a bike" Smile I don't know why it didn't dawn on me that someone else might also have had that thought… probably because I a damned foolWink
Anyway, since that gnome thread lifted my spirits and kept me positive through the crappiest time in my life I always remembered those gorgeous trails, and the good natured rider folk contributing to that thread, and thought: "When I get better and strong enough to ride again, I've got to get down there at some point" Well, 3 years later and I'm riding again, soooo psyched, and hoping for at least one Southern swing this summer! I've already cut and pasted your short list so I can research!
STILL think y'all gotta get on the "From Where We Stand" South Eastern Edition, grab those GoPros and steady cams and get on it!
@sambs827: Sounds good!
