Superenduro 2016: Round Two, Varazze - Saturday Practice

May 8, 2016
by Ben Winder
We’re back for practice day two here in Varazze for the second round of the Superenduro. The sun was beaming down all day today, but nothing that a run and jump into the sea couldn’t solve.

As it was a Saturday the trails were rammed, with people practicing and also some out for their weekend ride. But a lot of the top guys treated it as a rest day and took it pretty steady to get ready for tomorrows racing.

With the pits set up in the morning, it began to feel like a race and there was/is a buzz in the air, pits and stands are lining the already extremely chaotic streets.

To say the pits are a stone s throw from the sea is no understatement.

To add to the hustle and bustle of the pits expo area it was also market day. Offering some of the most unessential ooh I might need that one day items.

I must say it again. MTB E-Bikes are a threat to this sport. If they start prevailing, the erosion of ridable tracks will by massively accelerated. I.e. what could have been ridden in 1 day for good athletes, can be ridden numerous times by the average Joe. Meaning devastation of many areas and in consequence bans by local authorities. If the industry keeps growing it is clearly unsustainable. This applies at least to more urbanized parts of the world (where I live). I am not completely against MTB e-bikes, I just think they should be classified as motorbikes. And I do not agree with the opinion that E-bikes can be a solution for less physically able people. If you can’t do it the normal way, don’t do it. If you don’t like uphills ride DH and if you don’t like pedalling ride moto.

"If you don't like uphills ride DH"

I was thinking something very similar when I saw that e-bike pic.

Is it just me, or does it seem strange that e-bikes would race Enduros? A format with a name based on the word "endure"? I thought the liaison portion, while not timed, was a big part of the format. And a motorized biked used on any portion of the course defeats the purpose of an Enduro..

Personally I agree that E-bikes are silly but at the same time, everyone should be allowed to enjoy the outdoors in whatever fashion they desire as long as it doesn't harm the environment or people. On that note, most people with e-bikes are not riding hard enough to tear anything up let alone cause significant erosion in trails. the guys that decide to go riding in or after a rainfall are eroding trails far worse. And i bet you wont find an e-biker out in the rain.

Here in California the City of Los Altos just placed a Ban on all MTB because the times of E-bikes on Strava.
  • 6 5
@enrico650: I think Strava is the guilty party in this case.

Not only are they causing increased damage, but in a race format like this, it is straight up not fair. To think that they are racing guys like Rude and Clementz but aren't even putting in the work. If people want to ride E-bikes, let them. But they should not be allowed to enter competitions were the racers are putting in the blood, sweat, tears, and overall effort to be competitive. It is not fair to those people who put in the time to reach peak fitness while others are reaching the bottom of a stage and turning on a motor to get back up to the top.

@S-nicholas: I agree they should not be allowed to compete against non motorized bikes. That is a no brainer. It would be like a speed boat racing a paddle boat.
  • 3 2
I agree with the environmental impact concerns you voice. But I also believe in the evolution of technology and sport, and the freedom of choice. This transition needs management rather then complete objection.

What's the difference between shuttling and using a E-bike?
  • 3 0
 @EricHarger:
The pedal assisted bikes were reaching higher speeds.
  • 7 2
@S-nicholas: it's a separate category they're not even racing all the stages. It's not like anyone is comparing these guys to Rude, Clementz, etc. and I'm sure the e-bike racers are still athletes.

On a side note:
Equestrians do way more damage than any ebike doing laps will.

if you guys don't have to deal with equestrians then your lucky. They do tons of damage and most have a negative disposition to mtb'rs.

I don't know about your guys' trails, but with the way e-bikes work right now, i.e. Pedal assist only, they're useless on DH sections on my home turf. It's just too technical and tight. It might save a couple of seconds of Strava but most don't give a sh*t about that.
The average Joe does not have the fitness to ride and e-bike more than 3 laps at speed on the trails I ride. Maybe if they go slower they could but then they probably wont do much trail damage.

Get some kid who races bmx that gets one for xmas and then I could see having problems...

Well Durango Colorado just banned E bikes, so who knows what the future holds. Still don't think Enduro races should have an "e" category

 @Mfilippino: A shuttle isn't ridden on a trail for non-motorized vehicles.

You are so wrong that e-bikes are going to ruin trails and I challenge you to prove it on any properly built trail out there. That being said any trail that is built incorrectly is going to erode and self destruct in very sort time. You Have to understand how a pedalmatic bike works or what you are going to get is what we had years ago with hikers and equestrians on the shore and other areas in the lower mainland, they didn't want us there, until it was proven that our footprint was marginally bigger than hikers and much smaller than horses. Educate yourself

@skater4145: +1 about horses doing more damage!

If the category e bikes are racing in is different, can you explain that category for us?

And why don't they just have their own little Super-D league or something? Far less confusion. E Super-D. ED for short. Viagra and Cialis can be sponsors. LOL

Anyway...

There is still nothing enduro or endurance about e-bikes when compared to our current EWS, Super Enduro, Big Mountain Enduro, and all of the regional series out there.

I'm fine with E-Bikes, as long as they have a 26" wheel offering and somehow find a way to put water bottle mounts on the frame.
  • 1 0
Did you guys read about the woman who got caught in a cyclocross race with a motorized bike?

"The e-bike category is back for another round"
NO.

E bikes are motos....leave them off mnt bike trails and we will all benefit in the long run. Pedal power!!

 Two days of practice????

Then again I'm not an Enduro guy. I'd like to think that it would be the real deal with courses run blind but perhaps that's totally unrealistic.
  • 6 3
First of all what is super enduro? I know enduro, but what is so super about this. Secondly WHY are able bodied athletes riding E-Bikes???
  • 9 2
Superenduro is just the name of the main Italian Enduro series.

2nded on the able bodied E-bikes! We sold a long travel E-full suss to an older rider and trail builder who had some pretty serious health problems and it was awesome that it let him get back out on the trail again, but for people who are still capable of pedalling properly... WTF, bros?

First of all SuperEnduro is WHO basically invented Enduro. Secondly, really boring...always the same comments regarding e-bike: nothing new??

Me thinks its Enduro plus+ Boost

Who really cares if they are racing e-bikes. They are not in the same category and are only racing certain stages. I am not a fan, but who really cares if someone else wants to ride them. They are pedal assisted too, so they do not destroy trails like everyone is saying. Horseback is more detrimental to the trails than any e-bike. All that matters is that people are biking and having fun, who cares on what or how.

Last photo. That's what I like best about mountain biking - helping others on the trail. Sometimes you give help other times you get help. Always awesome.

Last I checked an E-bike is a motorized, what's the difference between it and a motorcycle?

These trails look so great! Must be a blast!
