2002 Harvest Huckfest - Whistler BC 2002 Harvest Huckfest - Whistler BC
The Harvest Huckfest is back to celebrate the closing weekend of Whistler's Bike Park. 2002 has been a monumental year for the park with all kinds of new trails, a new lift system, the biggest visitor numbers ever, and big events. There is no where else in the World like it. Fact, the bike park numbers are up 50% over last year and Harvest Huckfest 2001 was the biggest day ever. By all accounts, Whistler will be setting the standard for the future this coming (Canadian) Thanksgiving weekend.

Whistler 2000 Biking super hero road trip Whistler 2000 Biking super hero road trip
Its been 5 years
now since a group of us have been heading out to Whistler. When I would tell
people that we do an annual trip to the same place, they would always ask “Why
don’t you go to the Shore or Nelson or …” and we would always say that there was
so much biking in the Whistler area that we hadn’t done it all yet.

And you would think that after 5 years, that would have changed - but it
hasn’t: every year Whistler just keeps getting better and better - especially
with the advent of the Whistler Bike park. Naturally, since it was built,
everyone thinks when you say you are riding in Whistler that you are going to
hit the bike park: But if you go to Whistler and only ride there, you are not
even getting half the picture. The bike park is incredible, but it is only a
small part of the story….and since everyone knows the bike park, I’ll spin the
focus more on the other stuff…

You see cause we don’t go out to Whistler as us - we go out there to take on
our secret identities as biking road trip heroes …

(note some names and events in this story may be modified to protect the
um…innocent)

FSA Launches Oversize BB Website FSA Launches Oversize BB Website
FSA launched www.oversizebb.com today to promote its Mega Tech bottom bracket standard that like the ISIS design, is open to any component manufacturer. FSA has already designed cutting and installation tools in addition to providing BB shells in 6000 and 7000 series aluminum, cromoly and titanium. The Mega Tech is based around a 50mm BB shell (as opposed to today's 42mm standard) with bearings pressed into the shell (a la BMX). This allows for a larger bearing and spindle design with many benefits such as increased stiffness, durability, strength and lighter weight. FSA is touting the new standard for XC, Road and Track bike use, while DH and freeride use almost seems a given. No word yet on how the industry is accepting Mega Tech, but we'll try to get the scoop from FSA at Interbike.

2002 Junior Freeride Championships A Success! 2002 Junior Freeride Championships A Success!
After a cold, wet, intense day worth of riding, the junior freeride championships were finished. A great downhill course (as always), a mega gnarly trials park competition, and a fast, technical dual made the 2002 JFC a great time for both spectators and riders alike. Although the weather was maybe less than favorable, the atmosphere made up for it. Props to the COP dudes James, Aimee, Vicky-Lyne, Emerson, Darcy and Ron from Ridley's Cycle for making this event again, a huge success. To check out the full results, click "Read More".

Well, where do I start. We are now back in Calgary after 63 days living and traveling on the bus. We logged over 4,600kms on the bus and over 13,000kms on the rental truck. Both the bus and truck fared well...surprising since the bus was retired by the city 7 years ago because it was unsafe for public transit, and not to mention it's been in active service (including the Drop In Crew) for over 27 years, and the truck was a Ford rental...enough said!

B-Team dirty dog adventures: Operation Rossland, P B-Team dirty dog adventures: Operation Rossland, Part II
Well as we said before Rossland was such a rad place we decided to head back for September Long weekend (or week for some of us as it turned out). If there’s one thing we've learned this season about road trips it's don't organize, and don't have any expectations. Now this is not normal practice for most folks, but the B-team is all about fun, riding, beer and just going where ever the wheel rolls. Departing from Calgary we had a larger group than the usual B-Team…. Nick, Cro-Mag (Aaron), Steve C (The Count), Gord, Robb.

Another Stellar Psychosis Another Stellar Psychosis
Clear skies, warm temperatures and a dry, dusty course greeted this year's Mount 7 Psychosis competitors. While the majority of the race course was super buff, a lack of precipitation in the week leading up to the race left the Dead Dog section (top 600m) absolutely treacherous. You could probably count the number of riders who cleaned it on one hand. The entire community of Golden seemed to be in attendance as competitors, volunteers, spectators and First Aid Attendants (3 first aid stations on Dead Dog alone). The home town crowd watched their very own Nathan Briggs take top spot from the launch with a time of 14:52.46. The small women's field was won by Pip Parr with a time of 22:03.68. What most impressed me was the number of times that came in under 16:30, damn that's smoking fast!

Johnny Smoke here from Bush Pilot MTB Guides.
A little history lesson for all you kids out there. World War II was won in large part due to the ingenuity of the American engineers who designed their equipment. One of the most famous weapons of that era was the Sherman tank. Cheap, efficient and easily produced, it was also effective and powerful. Answer-Manitou is hoping that their latest suspension offering of the same name will live up to the reputation of the original.

He will now shift his focus to "marathon downhilling" events like the Megavalanche (perhaps Golden's Mt7 Psychosis for 2003?) and product development with his various sponsors. With Nico's love for rally racing, you can be certain he'll be pursuing more time behind the wheel to replace his time in the saddle.

Only 4 More Sleeps Until Psychosis!!! Only 4 More Sleeps Until Psychosis!!!
Alright kiddies, the race of the year, Golden's Mount 7 Psychosis is set to go this weekend. The course has been lovingly prepared by the Golden Cycling Club and their trail maintenance crew, and I've never seen it in better shape. Now's the time to register online and secure one of the only 200 spots, but Steve Fisher has informed us they'll be offering Saturday registration for those unable do it in advance if space is available. The rodeo grounds will play host to the beer gardens and Bike Expo, and there's sure to be impromptu hill climbs, dirt jumping and other lunacy (like last year's steer/bike wrestling) with wacky prizes. This is the longest race of the year, I hope to see you there!

Long Term Ride - Big Hit DH Frame Long Term Ride - Big Hit DH Frame
Up until recently I was a single pivot guy. My first fully was a Santa Cruz Heckler. When the Heckler broke, I got a Bullit. When the Bullit broke, the Santa Cruz crash replacement warranty kept me on my Bullit., I liked the Santa Cruz bikes because they were simple, low maintenance, and had a low stand over height. I was confident with my bike. I never backed away from a large drop for fear of my bike not being able to handle it. To say I was apprehensive when my new BigHit frame arrived is an understatement. Before this, my only experience on a BigHit was riding around the parking lot on a medium frame. It felt awkward to me, I sat a lot higher up than on my Bullit and the cockpit just didn’t feel right to me.

Product Test - Norco Team DH Product Test - Norco Team DH
Based in BC's lower mainland, it's no surprise Norco bikes are developed and tested on the North Shore. While Norco's VPS line of bikes are certainly no newcomers to the marketplace, that doesn't mean the familiar monocoque frame design is stale. Rather than reinvent the wheel, Norco was wise enough to license and refine the Specialized Horst Link four bar linkage. Over the years, the frame's geometry has been tweaked, pivot bushings have given way to sealed bearings and material has been strategically added and removed to achieve a balance of strength, durability and sensible weight.

Low turnout, fast times at Kicking Horse race Low turnout, fast times at Kicking Horse race
On Sunday, August 25, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort held its first ever Cycling
B.C.
sanctioned downhill mountain bike race, the Kicking Horse Challenge,
and although turnout was low, the action was high-flying and fast.
"It went really well and the conditions were great with a little bit of
rain," said course organizer Steve Fisher.
This year's times were nearly 30 seconds faster than last year's
unsanctioned event, said Fisher, a fact that testifies to the excellent
course conditions and high-caliber of competition.

Don't forget, the Terminator Downhill is set to go this Saturday, Sept 7 at KHMR, you won't find a better tune up for the Psychosis!

Scott Belton of Adrenaline Descents and the Cedar House is putting a heli drop together for Sunday, Sept 8. With a goal of 30 riders, cost should be around $60. Shoot us an email if you're interested in the drop, we'll be sure to pass it on to Scott.

Coquitlam Fundraiser a Huge Success Coquitlam Fundraiser a Huge Success
We are very happy to announce that this past weekends' fundraiser was a
great success. The biking community came together to raise over $3700 to go
towards the park.
The evening was filled with bevies, 50/50 babes (not you
Paul), prizes, music and more prizes. In total, three mountain bike frames
and two complete BMX bikes were given out amongst hundreds of other quality
prizes. A big thanks goes out to all who pitched in to help and all the
sponsors who donated products. Unfortunately the evening did have one low
point when some genius decided tear down all the five minute parking signs
outside the pub. It's a shame that some of our money will have to go to
having these signs repaired.

We look forward to starting construction in the next couple of weeks. Look
for upcoming work party information right here on Pinkbike.
