  Bright, Victoria Australia

At the end of a massive weekend of racing and four seasons worth of weather, Troy Brosnan and Tracey Hannah walked away as Australia’s National Champions. The small mountain town of Bright in the Victorian alps, once again delivered a fast, loose track and some of the best racing seen in Australia this season.

Wet weather on Friday soaked the track for the first sessions of practice, but as the temps warmed up leading into race day, any mud that could be seen had turned to dust. The crowds poured into the dry track on Sunday to watch Australia’s best downhiller's go head-to-head in the final spectacle of the weekend.

The racing for the day lived up to the hype with riders giving it their all for a chance at the title. Tracey Hannah comfortably took the win in the Elite Women’s field, adding a 9th championship jersey to the collection and showing why she is so competitive on the world stage. Ex cross county Olympian, Lisa Mathison, put in a fantastic effort to take second ahead of Dani Beecroft who’s summer on the downhill bike has looked very promising.

It again came down to the wire in the Elite Men’s final. Connor set the benchmark in seeding - he was fast and confident leading into the race run, however a back on form Brosnan managed to find an extra second of speed to steal the win by 1.68 seconds. Josh Button pulled out all the stops riding himself into third, 0.46 seconds ahead of Dean Lucas. Victorian racer Oliver Zwar continued his solid form from the National series to snatch the fifth spot on the podium from Mick Hannah. Josh Clark grabbed an exciting win over Jackson Frew and Remy morton in the Junior Men's Final.

Is this a parallel universe? Didn't recognise Sam without the Troy Lee D3

for 2016, $am is all about cashin cheques and avoidin wrecks.

gotta get that bank account fat, retirement is right around the corner.
daddy needs to buy the kids some new shoes.

brutal helmet.

lol Stacy. We both know Sam wants to win races. Don't kid yourself. Can't blame him if he also wants to get paid well after risking life and limb in that pursuit. His stock is still high after all this time. Good for him.
  • 6 1
i hope he does win one.
never said he shouldn't be getting PAID.
the dude, and a handfull of others during their career, changed the way the game is played.

much respect.

but a fashion crime is a fashion crime, and that helmet is something outta the lost and found bin at c.o.p.

i'd think a king like sam would want a proper crown no?
  • 3 0
haha. yea it's a weird look after watching him his entire career with TLD
  • 2 0
haha, that leatt lid is a weird look on it's own.
  • 2 1
Don't understand fashion... Leatt lid maybe looks different, but it surely has advantages over TLD. I mean when the D3 was re-designed the last time? And I don't mean fresh graphics...
  • 1 0
Leatt has some great tech features in their latest helmets, so just safety wise, it obviously wasn't that bad decision.
  • 2 0
Negative propped for asking an honest question? Sometimes I don't understand this place.

I really think representatives of USA Cycling should have been here to take notes.

Spectators? You mean people besides friends and family who come to enjoy our sport? I've heard this exists but I've never seen it in real life...

I wonder if maybe this article is polishing it up and just like in the US every event started late and awards took forever and only half the winners got jerseys and their website and everyone's personal information got hacked...

Great article and great pics - thanks! Bright is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to... Especially this time of year.

Bummed for Connor. But Troy is peaking - will be a great WC season. And again Ben Stevens, excellent photos mate well done.
  • 2 0
Im very excited for the WC season - should be good! cheers mate

can't wait for connor to get his first win, pretty sure he will be up there this season!
  • 6 1
Congratulations to Troy and Tracy! This is déjà vu 2015 champs, Feron just missing it again
  • 7 0
Feron is such a talent it's a shame he's not got that national champs yet! Can't wait to watch him absolutely kill it on the wc circuit this year. The guys a pinnnnnnner!!!!!
  • 7 1
No one's going to talk about that kit Troy is wearing? No? Okay
  • 3 0
as soon as tld comes out with some wild kit the planet goes crazy

anyone else though, its whatever/cool/alright/trendsetting.

ugh
  • 11 1
@jaycubzz our designers work hard on creating unique looks and quality product, but was not aware of the planet going crazy-like the sound of it though Wink
  • 5 0
Every event Troy is at he has the sweetest kit of any rider by far.
  • 3 0
I was going the other direction, looks awful to me. Then again, I kinda liked speeda, so what do I know? Razz
  • 4 0
really like his racekit. reminds me of early 90ies nike tracksuits and vibrant sportswear of that time. will it be available for the public?
  • 2 0
I'm only asking because I'm unsure..... Are Troy's pants painted on @troyleedesigns ?
  • 2 0
@troyleedesigns as in people seem to complain about the perceived "odd/strange" choices, for example the speeda stuff, and some others i cant remember that people would say "looks like pajamas".

i, for one, appreciate the crazy lookin stuff.

and yes, maybe i exaggerated a bit when i said "the world goes crazy".

maybe just the pinkbike world...
  • 2 0
@Waldon83 thats specialized kit, not troy lee.
  • 2 0
i was going to bring up the "kits that look like pajamas" comment. but for brosnan, it is more like "super hero pajamas", so i guess it is okay...
  • 2 0
Copped so much flak for wearing 'pajaymas' in Whistler back in 2006 by all the Canadians..... Now look at you all !
  • 1 0
 PJs lets face it.
  • 4 0
I think Connor will be on many WC podiums this year. He had a great year last season and looks to be on the same pace this year.
  • 2 0
I know it`s stupid, but it feels so wrong to see Sam with out a stylish TLD.
I really hope Sam will be able to get to the top. once again.
I always wonder what could have been if he hadn´t crashed in Hafjell.
Then again that´s the way Sam rides... the fine line.
I know it`s stupid, but on the fotos he looks like a fallen hero.
  • 2 1
Poor Germany.... look at the aussies. They know how to bring great riders to light......
  • 4 2
Hopefully we can have Troy or Connor as the world DH champ this year!
  • 1 0
 connor ftw!
  • 2 0
Thought he was keeping TLD for helmet as a sponsor....!?
  • 2 0
Whomever you have employed to do your PB social commentary @troyleedesigns deserves more money!
  • 1 0
troyleedesigns - Thank you for the link it sure is a bummer not to see Sam on TLD, not to mention weird since lots of people relate Sam to TLD.
  • 1 0
While huge fan of TLD and ole school,Hill days, Royal CRC kit has been sick as, the Leatt Helmet is not the issue, it is the googles that look weird, Ive seen this in the D3 as well, more a moto fit google, Spy ftw.
  • 2 1
Doesn't Kona have a carbon Operator? On the photo looks like Connor is using an aluminium one...
  • 3 0
No carbon DH bikes from Kona in 2017.
  • 2 0
Aluminium 650b Operator. Carbon is still 26".
  • 1 0
As far as I understand for 2017 there won't even be a carbon operator. The precept 200 will be the entry level DH bike and the 27.5 operator will be an all out race machine with the help from a even longer top tube and steeper HT angle.
  • 4 3
 Carbon is trash.
  • 2 0
 Poor Fearon.. frustration
  • 2 0
How are those bikes held onto the shuttle?
  • 1 0
Crank slips into a slot, then an old tube keeps things tight-ish. Some are brutal on the cranks - that's if you care about your fancy new carbon cranks, that is...
  • 1 0
Killed it Ben, such a great read. Spewing to have missed it!
