ME BIKE GETS MUDDY

What can we say? It's been a while. Four years is no short weekend, but after all this time, the one and only Sam Hill is back setting the kind of pace we used to know him for... the fastest kind. Qualifying off the back, but still in touch with 6th, he was more a wildcard pick than any kind of dead cert. Problems with his brakes in that run may have held him back from throwing down all his chips and giving away early his master-plan to destroy this infamous Canadian raceway when it mattered. It comes as a more than welcome surprise addition to the history books, as we see five winners from five rounds and indeed, the return of the king. Sam Hill at long last comes home to roost in the place where he won the World Championships and raced his first ever World Cup all the way back in 2001; the mighty MS of A.

Some people had other ideas... These hands had a strangle-hold on the track like no one could have predicted. Other than maybe Sam Hill's son, Bam, who called it all along if you have Instagram.

bigquotesI wanted all year to win. Fort William I was happy to get second but still disappointed to not get top step. I was really looking forward to this race because the last big win I had was World Champs here in 2010, so I thought I may get things started again here...classic Mont St. Anne. The track is long, rough and fast... just a challenge all the way. I kind of like these sorts of conditions and I put a good run together, missed a few of my lines but I am pumped that I still pulled it off - Sam Hill - CRC Nukeproof

Aaron Gwin has done well here and today may just not have been his day. Windham could be another opportunity for Gwin to get a second win of the season.
The quiet American, Aaron Gwin, knows great success in these climbs. Today wasn't as he'd hoped, but we can assume he's saving something extra special for the home-soil of Windham next weekend.

After a few days of on and off rain it was all sunshine today making the track ultra fast and loose in spots.

bigquotesI've had good times and bad here really... I've won a few times, but crashed in the World Champs and then again last year. This year has been definitely the hardest for me mentally and my fitness is not there... I'm struggling on the long tracks. I had a six week bed rest after Australia due to a glandular fever infection, just before Fort William, which obviously set me back and I've tried to catch up but the mid season is just not the right time to get some solid weeks of training in - Rachel Atherton - Atherton Racing

Rachel Atherton pushing hard into the finish line. She is certainly in good form, but the top five's a tough crowd. It's unlikely we'll wait too long before she strikes again.

Rachel Atherton was on a very fast run but would loose time to Manon through the lower woods. AN early season illness set her back a bit in training which makes these long tracks difficult but look for her to have no troubles with fatigue next week in Windham on a much shorter track.
Rachel was on a very fast run, dominating the upper splits but would lose time to Manon through the lower woods. Look for her to have no troubles with fatigue next week in Windham on a much snappier stateside course.

bigquotesI am really happy with the result and being so close to Manon because I honestly thought I would be miles away. I'm looking forward to Windham, I do like the track there and it is a bit shorter than this one. It's all still to play for, keep it moving I guess! Rachel Atherton - Atherton Racing

bigquotesIt still feels weird, I am still expecting to not be up there! I'm really happy the racing is close, it's a bit boring when someone is miles ahead so it 's exciting to watch, it 's cool. Today I was actually not going really fast, I kept stalling all the time on the top before the first split... Under the gondola I was getting it together! I always do it like that, building up the speed towards the bottom so I guess I have to sort this out for next weekend because the Windham track's short. When I came down to the finish area I saw red on the board and thought: Oh no... but I snuck it back just at the end - Manon Carpenter - Madison Saracen Factory Team

Loris Vergier's knee tells you all you need to know about his weekend. He was fighting to tame the MSA beast that took him down in qualies but it only bit back again in the final. Third is still more than a useful result, however, and he lies just 4 points behind the series lead.

Sam Dale couldn't find the kind of luck to match team mates Manon and Simmonds.

The dust has settled and history has been made again. Time to look toward the Windham round.
Matt Simmonds slayed his way to 8th and only 3 seconds from the sharp end. The powerful Englishman is well on his way to top step contention.

Loic Bruni was pushing hard in practice this morning perhaps a bit too hard. Bruni finished in ninth surely not the result he was looking for.

Gwin will take missing the podium on the chin and look right ahead to Windham. From the side of the track, his riding has stood out all year and the home soil incentive could be just the thing to lock it down in the race run.

It's really well done coverage but there's one bit that I wish was covered that includes a flat rear tire.... if you watched the race, you'll know what I mean. I cannot wait to see good footage of the most insane kinda recovery/ avoiding complete destruction event this season and in recent memory. This was such a good event and very sick photos as well.

I agree, especially with my ridiculously slow computer that can't handle videos.

Fantastic pictures Wow. got a background for every day of the week!! Raaaaddd!
  • 3 0
Agreed -- flat tires and broken hands seemed to be a common theme here this weekend, and more than one rider helped themselves out of the final race by flatting or running rims (a la Gwin) during qualifying. As per the usual MSA performance, it was eventful. If you have a chance, get to Windham next Saturday -- some of this season's best racing (and ensuing theatrics) is still to come. Wink

Please let there be an ''afterbang'' MSA

So great to see Hill winning! Don't want to be misunderstood but actually it's his last big "real" win since 2009. For those who don't remember the 2010 World Champs race: Hill had some issues in Quali and was therefore the only top gunner starting early. At mid-race it began to rain... Wink Not that anyone would complain, but actually it most likely wouldn't have been his day back then, if it wasn't for the rain.
Even better to see him on top after 5 years Big Grin

the only thing missing is the Afterbang, otherwise PB is doing another year of fantastic WC coverage. Big props!

In place of the "after bang" you'll notice we have stepped up these daily's with many more photos and a team of 4 hard working photographers. We try to do one big "epic" from the finals rather than another post days late. Hope you all like what you have been seeing this year.

To anyone saying the track was a freeway or dumbed down.... I have raced or photographed most of the tracks over the past 6 or so years and have to say this version of MSA ranks up there with one of the best. Proper track with multiple lines everywhere, raw and fast with one if the more difficult sections of woods anywhere. True classic.
  • 11 0
Who the hell was saying that? This track is pure brutality. I rode it a few years ago and looks only to have gotten rougher since then. Some unexpected changes (flat off camber corners) but I think they got a great mix and definitely a true DH track.
  • 9 1
dumbed down?!? the track looked burly. you only have to look at the podium to see this is the sort of track fans and riders want. more of the same please uci. and for gods sake drop pmb already.
  • 8 1
Good news, PMB is dropped for next year!
  • 10 0
Anyone saying that hasn't seen the track, the footage or the wrecks -- if there's a place to win, it's MSA. Between the technical and tricky sections, the high speeds, the absolutely brutal length and the inconsistently consistent body-hammering conditions, this track challenged everyone... It was good to see. A good track puts everyone on display, both strengths and weaknesses. MSA is one hell of a course.
  • 6 0
The Track this year is really Brutal. They changed the whole top section with a gnarly rock garden near the top and off camber gaps. Many riders were still trying to find the optimal lines just a couple hours before their race runs. On top of that, it practically the longest of the year. Amazing race (The best this year so far imo). I'm really stoked for Sam. Windham should be pretty exciting also.
  • 4 2
FUUUCK YEAH!! thanks guys for the appreciation i think everyone was pleased with the track this year, they did an awesome job, on the track, behind the scenes.... The only thing left to do is put some whoops! Congrats Sam

aaaaargh! screw all this wide sx inspired machine built rubbish. the track is sick. everyone is happy. it doesnt need any whoops. it doesnt need any motorway straights with huge tables. it needs rough natural terrain and its got that in bucketloads.please dont ruin it!

Wow... Pumped to see Hill back at the top. I am glad I am not trying to win these races... Insanely competitive this year.. I'm callin Peaty winning the next one for maximum overload.
  • 2 0
If there's a track Peaty could cork one off, Windham is just that track. He's been slowly creeping up the charts all season, so why the hell not?

It's going to be tighter than any other race this season with it being a shorter track. I'd imagine the top-20 will be within 5-7 sec of the winner.

msa was epic a lot of chamfes on the hot seat. the track wasn't dumbed down. the video coverage didn't include the highway to hell section. the top part receive a lot of work and it look like a world dh track. hill doesn't pedal pedal much but he seem to rarelly used his brake. he got lotof flow and jump over a lotof rock, roots, trunk. all the rock and trunk seem to be smooth jump for him.

Why is there a specialized sign on the cutout of Steve smith?

question for the photogs and journos: are the Schwalbe riders running the new "Le Système" tires? and how's it working out for them? were there less flats at MSA as a result?

Stoked to see Sam win again. Does anyone know if the version of the 5 10 impacts he is wearing are still available? CRC appear to only have the new version.

is Sam growing a mullet ?
  • 16 0
just like the goatee filters air and works like a cold air intake, the mullet works like an air diffuser, allowing the rider to get more rear grip and higher speed trough the corners and the speed traps.

One aspect keeps me still thinking. How does a rear 650B wheel resist lateral forces? A remember hub width and axle are still the same. So spokes are longer and mounted at worse agle. This should be more like a jelly wheel on each corner.

It's not really that much bigger...not when you look at the chasm between 26 and 29. I can't really feel a difference in lateral flex between 26 and 27.5 in all honesty. Granted, these guys/gals ride a little harder than I do. Wink

I hope you are right. I am using a compromised quality 26" rim. Its dimensions are like the Mavic 729, so it should be strong even when made of 6061alloy only. I am using 36 spokes and I am heavy. One thing I know for sure. If spokes tension is too weak, the rear wheel bends in corners and this is unpleasent feel. Maybe I am too heavy, maybe my tire is to grippy, maybe the rims is bad or maybe something else is the reason, but this is where my worries come from. I hope a strong and expensive 650b rim will handle this well.
