Gee Atherton is Back Between the Tape at the Andorra DH World Cup 2023

Aug 24, 2023
by Ed Spratt

After racing his last World Cup back in 2021, Gee is the latest Atherton making a comeback as he is back practising in Andorra this week.

Following his horrific crash filming for 'The Knife Edge', Gee Atherton has spent the last couple of years getting himself back up to race condition and finally at the Andorra World Cup this week he is back between the tape.

In a social media post, Gee has said he is taking a "couple of chill laps this weekend" although a 46th in Timed Training is pretty decent considering his time away from racing. While Gee has so far said he was only planning to practice this weekend you never know what will happen for qualifying tomorrow.

While congratulations are in order for Gee, and this reflects in no way on him, it's mad that a trade team rider can come or go as they please while privateers can race the majority of the semis and not be allowed to enter races

Money? The teams pay big bucks im assuming to have that priveledge. Are you really surprised about anything to do with money from the UCI?

I thought the same when a couple of years ago jojo jones raced an EWS event as part of a team. It's not their fault, but it's unfair for privateers. Gee deserves an all time access to any race though.

I wonder how the team roster works exactly. Like can one of the teams just put Adam Brayton on their team this weekend so he could race? Would be great publicity for that team.

Craziest thing is that Dan Atherton has been listed on their team for around 35 years

@motts: i think they could? Pinkbike brought in a fill in rider last year when i rider went down.

@motts: I would assume no. Some people were wondering why Gee (and indeed Dan) were listed on the Atherton's team roster before the season started, but this is exactly why. This way they've been officially signed up as team riders for the season, giving them the opportunity to race (or not) like every other team rider. I don't think I've ever heard of team contract changes during the season, so it's probably just not possible according to the rules. (Apparently it's possible to leave/ get dropped by a team mid season, thinking of Noga Korem just recently, but as far as I've understood not really following the enduro scene, she hasn't been picked up by another team yet.)

Literally this entire sport is based on a pay to play structure. I don’t understand why you’re surprised. It just so happens that some people pay MORE than others, so they are given more privileges. Paying for privilege is the backbone of the bike industry, and some would argue, society.

@bgoldstone: Thinking maybe this can be done to indeed replace someone, but not hire a completely new addition to the team mid season? So if you've signed up as a four rider team, you can (temporarily) replace someone to stay at four to have the chance to accumulate similar team points, but can't unexpectedly add a fifth team member?

He's a prior winner... not just a trade team rider...

@donimo: A couple of the kiwi jr women's have got new teams. Sacha Earnest was on a Transition bike pre-worlds and is now rocking Trek kit and bike.

I dunno, after watching him fall off that cliff, I'd say he can ride whatever he wants.

 @donimo:
Rule 4.18.001 says Elite teams (costs upwards of €23000 to register as one) can have temporary replacement riders fill in for sick/injured riders, this could lead to a possible upset again like Josh Button in Cairns 2016 filling in on Kona for a 5th. I don’t think Adam Brayton will be pulling that but it is possible for an Elite team with a downed rider to take him on, maybe Sam Hill being out could be filled in for at Nukeproof next weekend.

@adamdigby: a team also has to field at least one rider or lose their status next season. With Amaury and Miriam out Commencal better hope Daprela doesn't go down. They would still have Hugo in jrs though.

Absolute legend of the game. Nothing to prove, just racing for the love of it.

What annoys me is not that he is racing, it's that he is riding for a bit of training (his words), while Brayton isn't allowed to compete.

Read Braytons IG post, he admits its his fault for not checking he got points for semi's
