Press Release: Pembree

Pembree, the start-up company from the U.K. are launching its second all-mountain flat pedal. The D2A flat pedal is a lighter option for the more weight conscious rider and maintains our carbon neutral stance following the successful introduction of the R1V earlier this year. As a company with huge ambition, we know how important it is to hear your feedback. We listened to responses from our previous product launch and feedback from riders out on the trails and are confident that the D2A pedal will exceed expectations.

As with all Pembree products, the D2A has been developed from the ground up by our small and dedicated team; the result of numerous prototypes, refinements and testing. From our factory in East Sussex, England, the D2A has been carefully designed to provide exceptional grip coupled with high-quality bearings that provide longevity and reliability.

“With the D2A pedal, we have managed to hit the sweet spot and find a balance between a pedal that is lightweight but strong that provides amazing grip whilst also achieving our environmental goals. Our small, family-run factory is always bustling with new ideas and I can’t wait to get this pedal out to riders and onto the mountains!” Pembree Founder Phil Law states.

Starting with a 2014 T6 aluminium pedal body that we have CNC machined in-house to very exacting tolerances, we’ve added 10 Pembree designed Traction Pins per side allowing the D2A to provide incredible grip even in the wettest conditions. Running on two sealed SKF stainless steel ball bearings per pedal and a plain bearing from IGUS, the stainless steel spindle is not only strong but will also not rust - giving you years of trouble-free riding.

“The D2A is the perfect platform from a company that actually cares about the world we live in.” Pembree Team Rider Daryl Brown states.

The Pembree D2A flat pedal is available to purchase directly from pembree.com for £109/$140/€119 RRP. They will also be available to purchase through selected partners from October 2020.

ENVIRONMENT

We continue to be driven by our responsibility as a manufacturer in the mountain bike industry to do all we can to minimize the environmental impact of all of our products.
As such all of our products are:
• Designed with recyclability at the forefront of our minds
• All materials are traceable back to the foundries where they are produced and are easily recyclable
• Carbon neutral and manufactured in our factory solely powered on solar and wind energy
• Welcomed back by Pembree at the end of life for recycling at no cost.

PEDALS4TREES

Despite already successfully running as a carbon-neutral company, Pembree had a clear goal of becoming carbon negative and our #Pedals4Trees initiative has made this a reality. By definition, being carbon negative means removing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than we emit. For every pair of pedals sold, we plant at least one tree to help support this environmental goal.
This initiative is an evolution of Pembree’s original #Pedals4Pedals scheme which intended to reclaim materials from old pedals and recycle them. However, despite our best efforts, this was not able to work as intended and the new scheme will enable us to maintain our promise in a more viable, long-term way. Nonetheless, we will continue to offer to recycle old pedals at no cost for those who value this service.

Love a product launch without a price in it.
They're £109 if anyone's wondering.

If everyone has the same trouble with top loaded pins that I do then nobody was wondering about the price. But thank you for your research as the price should just be on this ad.
  • 3 0
@shotouthoods: Why do so many people dislike top-loaded pins? My pedals have bottom-loaded pins but I've stripped a couple of the threads trying to remove damaged pins. With a top load you could just use pliers to remove busted pins without worry of damaging the pedal body

@matt-15: Just my luck I guess

When I read ‘made to very exacting standards’ I become concerned for my other bike parts that were simply made to exacting standards......should I be worried?

 Very

 @nyhc00: f*ck

You're right, ‘made to very exacting standards’ is not a very technical way of describing our manufacturing tolerances. The thing that usually fails with pedals are the bearings and that is often caused by very wide tolerances in most pedal bodies due to the lower quality bearings. Our ball bearing houses are machined to within 0.008mm. SKF Bearings are the best in the business!!

@nyhc00: this joke belongs in Airplane

@ibishreddin: Surely you must be kidding?

@Pembreeuk: thanks for the further description, as someone whos had more than my share of pedal failure im always looking for a flat pedal that can withstand abuse and lots of miles, wont say any names but more than a few companys are off my list forever due to such poor recurring quality.
  • 1 0
Less exacting......you know, like SRAM stuff. Looking at you, Reverb, 4 generations of brakes!!

 @nyhc00: Don’t call me Shirley...

I admire the company's ethos, but wouldn't it be better if the pedals were made from recycled aluminium?
  • 7 0
Globally roughly 50% of aluminum is post-consumer recycled, and nationally the average can be much higher... I believe the USA produced aluminum hovers around 65%. I do not know what percentage foundries in the EU or UK utilize, but that's probably just a Google search away.
  • 2 0
Or what about recycled trees. Seems like that would close the loop.
  • 12 7
C'mon guys, you ain't fooling me. I know I'm paying for that tree. You don't think the cost of being carbon-neutral isn't being passed on to the consumer?
  • 11 2
The difference here is that you are buying directly from the manufacturer, this mean rather than all that profit going to a shop it can be spent on making the pedals sustainable. You dont pay for it, the fact that there isn't a middle man pays for the tree and other carbon balancing projects Smile If you bought them from a shop they would be more expensive and wouldn't be carbon negative Wink I see the logic here and I like it.
  • 17 0
Should they not pass on the cost to the consumer? Nobody works for free. It's then up to the consumer to decide if it's worth it to pay more for a more responsibly produced part.
  • 4 0
At a similar price to quite a few comparable quality pedals if you are paying more for carbon neutral it's not much more. Add that it's made in house by people that seem to be passionate about what they do it seems like a pretty good value to me.
  • 7 0
if consumers also reap the reward of being carbon neutral manufacturing, a livable planet, why not pay for it?
  • 6 0
C'mon guys, what do you expect from that username?
  • 7 0
 Are they e-bike compatible?
  • 1 1
Best pedals have to be the understated , under-reviewed HT PA-03 composite
Awesome grip (for comparison I’ve run One Up ,Burgtec, NK Horizon , DMR , Straitline and more ) pretty light, and 30 quid. Bearings might be a bit crap in comparison but you can get 3 sets for the price of these!
  • 6 0
Would you prefer 3 bottles of Sh1t wine or one bottle of good stuff?
  • 3 2
they are as garbage as the Chesters, grip is terrible and pedal feel wack. Platform size is also for girls wearing size 5 like Seths bermpeak. In no way are they in the same league as v12s, horizons, tmacs or daggas.
  • 1 0
The best I know of are the Superstar Nano X. £50 for a UK made alloy flat pedal, with decent grip just shows how much pedal companies have been ripping us off!
  • 1 0
@swampdonkeyuk: depends if im dragging my wine through mud and shit every week
  • 1 0
@rustyglaze5: you obviously havent seen or used them , platform is bigger than Horizons and you think v12 are good???
  • 1 0
I like the concept and the looks, the only quibble for me is the end cap that’s flush to the pedal body with those two tiny bolts holding it on. The rocks here would eat those up unfortunately.
  • 1 0
It says made in England not UK on the pedals! Smile
  • 2 0
 eh???
  • 16 0
Fun Fact, England is in the UK.
  • 1 0
@Patrick9-32: pretty soon it'll have to give up the right to call itself "united", same for the States of (Northern) America
  • 7 3
@Mr-Gilsch: we're still all United in that we're not as bad as amurica
  • 4 0
Probably a safer bet, there's nothing united about this kingdom these days!
  • 10 2
@benpinnick: I don't know, I don't know anyone, conservative, labour, green or unaffiliated who doesn't think Boris is a cock. That's one thing we can all get behind.

@Patrick9-32: has there ever been a popular prime minister in your country?

at first i thought it was a new brand out of PembReton,BC
  • 1 0
110mm wide or long?! these details are what matters most
  • 2 0
 Beautiful
  • 1 0
 Thank you
  • 1 0
Is there much concave on these, anyone know?
  • 4 4
Heavy, uses bushings, not cheap, I'll pass...

 www.ht-components.com/product/productDetail/12

I have the old model of these, pretty much the same story. But they were too expensive for me to look back now. Nylon pedals with bearings, and pins are literally the best option. Better for pedal strikes, lighter, cheaper.
  • 2 1
How could you have missed the point so entirely? Can't see the wood for TREES maybe Smile
  • 2 0
Almost every high end pedal uses a combination of bushings and bearings, DMR Vault V2, Chromag Scarab, Deity Bladerunners to name a few, all are comparably priced to this. These do look a bit heavier but only slightly more than the chromags.
  • 1 0
 @shami: and a lot doesn't.. I'll never buy a bushing pedal again.
  • 1 0
@lenniDK: our R1V pedal uses SKF sealed needle bearings if you are not a fan of bushes. The benefit of the bush is the pedal can be made thinner.
