Slack Randoms: A Recumbent Cannondale MTB, Freeride Proposals & A Full Suspension Carbon Commuter

Mar 28, 2021
by James Smurthwaite
We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel which we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

James Pierce's 'NonCanDale'

photo

What do you do if you get your hand on a vintage Cannondale frame? Cherish it and try to restore it to its former glory? Or hack it up and turn it into a recumbent frankenbike for a laugh? Well, James Pierce did the latter and ended up with a bike he calls the NonCanDale.

photo
The bike is built from the frames of a few bikes cobbled together.

James says, "I know looking back it seems a waste of a nice bike, but it was not. It was much more fun as a recumbent and the frame needed work to be useable as an mtb anyway." As for riding impressions, he said, "It was truly the most fun and scary bike in the world to ride off road" and that he had, "terrible visions of smashing my face on the handelbars!".

Watch a brief clip of the bike in action here, it looks about as wild as you'd imagine!

Ryuger Eidolon eBike

photo

We've seen Ryuger bikes plenty of times at trade shows but they normally display concept bikes that look like something you'd expect to see in Tron. Now, the brand has pared those ambitions down into something slightly more realistic in the form of the Eidolon. We say slightly because this full-suspension carbon ebike is still unlike any bike we've seen before.

photo

The 29" bike is powered by Shimano Steps E8000 motor with a Shimano 504Wh downtube-integrated battery but that's the most normal thing about it. Starting at the front, there's a linkage fork that uses a Cane Creek DB shock with a 650lbs spring. At the bottom of each leg of that fork is a Tektro disc brake with a 203mm rotor.

photo

In terms of on-bike storage, you get a three litre compartment in the top tube and, while the bike may seem to have committed the cardinal sin of having no water bottle mounts at first glance, there’s actually a triathlon style set up at the top of the aero seat post.

The rear of the bike is a single pivot, again driven by a Cane Creek DB shock and who could miss the bladed, 5 spoke wheels that are designed by Ryuger in house? In fact, all the carbon work is done by Ryuger using a manufacturing process that eliminates bladder bags and pre-formers for a bike that apparently uses less carbon while still being strong.

The bike is claimed to tip the scales at a respectable (for a full suspension ebike) 19 kg (42 lb). Pricing and availability is still tbc on the bike but we imagine you'll have to have the wealth of Bruce Wayne to get your hands on this Batcycle-style ride. For more information, click here.

This alternate colourway is called Acid Avocado.

The 1964 Hodaka has pretty familiar geometry

A 64° HTA and a ~1200mm wheelbase, sounds pretty familiar. Now I want a Hodaka...

It's not a recumbent until it has a little orange flag on it.

The metal poker sticking out of the head rest on the Cannondale is just wrong. All I can see is falling and that thing impaling the rider’s neck...

If I had to ride that thing, I'm not sure I'd mind getting brain-impaled

The bike was used for many years as a commuter bike off and on road and always made me smile... as a mtb my geometron g1 is much better than any other mtb (let alone old school stuff)????. Bikes are for riding, not museums!!

Rode a hodaka once. In a speedo. With flip flops. Friggin thing was so gummed up it stuck in full throttle, while carry cutie passenger. Around the block full bore, curbs, lawns, bushes... the whole deal. Finally clutched to let her off and popped that pinned throttle puppy into an absent rider free wheelie and massive wipeout. Screaming hodaka in the middle of the street till carb choked out and shut down. Push of shame back to the shed. Few more bong hits and off to play with water baloon launcher, which triggered a very angry neighbor going to jail after violent assault on the old front door. Then we pulled out the potato gun. That was a ton of fun, even on dirt weed pickin out seeds n stems.

Why go to the trouble of fitting 2 tektro brakes on one wheel when literally anything would stop better.
  • 3 0
I suppose the brake is weak enough that it won't matter that the right rotor is rotating in the wrong direction.

The Ryuger "commuter" has some serious problems. The composites company advertises that a selling point of the bike is that the bike has an adjustable saddle (so just like all bikes created in the past century). They also advertise that the bike is good because 3D modeling was done...impressive. The Instagram shows a carbon fiber wheel being machined on a lathe. Carbon fiber...on a lathe...being machined to size!

Not defending that atrocity of a bike or anything, but post-layup machining for carbon parts is actually very common in manufacturing. Things often need some touching up when coming out of the mold, especially for something like a wheel where run-out is pretty important.

I'm impressed I watched 7 minutes of rally driving footage with no crashes. I thought all rally montages were for crashes.

Always crazy when I think about the OBR 34cc engine in my 1/5th scale RC car having 9.5hp when I see hp ratings in things. My first moto, 1980 YZ80, had 14hp. And it felt like it had more.. My Dad raced a 1974 125cc Hodaka, in 1974, but after a season and hard to find parts and the Honda CR125 being a way faster bike, he switched to Honda. The olden days.

@oldschool: Yup, one of the best smells to ever come from an engines exhaust is the smell of Castrol R (bean oil), and I believe the RC fuels may use something very similar?

 @GT-CORRADO: French fries!

@GT-CORRADO: It's gasoline powered. I use ethanol free premium gas and Blendzall 2 stroke oil. It's got that smell you never forget. Actually just need the dust to bring me back to my youth. Dust, premix and high octane gas IS the best scent in the world.

On the Hodaka ad in the lower right corner, it says "two rear sprockets".... I don't get it? Do they just mean it comes with a spare or an alternate size if someone wants to change the gearing?
  • 1 0
Answered my own question, it came with a street sprocket and a slower/lower geared trail sprocket.

rally drivers blow me away with what they can do... that being said it always surprises me with the amount of grip I get on a dirt bike considering the bike is moving around all the time

About Hodakas. When I started riding in the mid 80's on my made in Japan (i.e. TIG welded) Richey Montare, my best friend also got a mountain bike and as teens we got to explore what was then known as the University of British Columbia Endowment Lands, now Pacific Spirit Park, and its network of what were at the time some reasonably technical trails as well as the early Whistler valley network. My friend, who was a ski racer and who became an excellent rider, had a Hodaka mountain bike. I believe it came from some sub-bike shop level retailer, possibly even Canadian tire, and I recall it had Suntour parts but the geometry was standard at the time with the 69/71 steering/seat angles. It was probably a reasonable purchase for a 14 year old kid except my friend's dad didn't count on him getting really into it and then systematically breaking all sorts of parts, and, lacking funds, borrowing spares off his dad's Nishiki. Which went great until his dad went to go for a ride. So I have fond memories of the Hodaka bicycle as many adventures were had. It looks like the bikes were made by Taiwanese contract manufacture Hodaka as an own brand but this was a long time after the motorbikes, so not sure of the connection.

Proposing while pretending to be hurt *and* with your full face on. Definitely a first, but not what you call a good proposal in my book.

With all the hype about a NASCAR race on dirt...I'd love to see one of those drivers even attempt the Rally Finland. Or any WRC for that matter...
  • 19 1
Believe it or not, most pros are pretty good drivers, regardless of their discipline. Gordon ran an F1 car at a competitive pace his first time in the seat. You can look at Kimi and how he did in NASCAR and rally or Scott Speed. Loeb was mildly competitive in prototypes. In the end they’re all really fast and get up to speed pretty well. They may not always be at the pointy end of the field but they’re generally competitive.

@gotohe11carolina: don't forget the pro motorcycle racers such as Damon Hill who were fast on motorcycles before F1.
  • 3 0
@gotohe11carolina: not to mention Tony Stewart doing all those dirt track races over the years.
