Voting Coming Soon: 2019 Pinkbike Photo of the Year Contest

Jan 24, 2020
by Pinkbike Staff
There is $10,000 CDN in cash on the line in the 2019 Photo of the Year Powered by Jenson USA, so get ready to nominate your favourite pictures.

What's at stake? $10,000 CDN Cash

The 9th annual Pinkbike Photo of the Year Contest is coming fast. The winner will join Steve Shannon, John Wellburn, Toby Cowley, Sterling Lorence, Christoph Laue, Sean Lee, Robb Thompson and Richard Baybutt in the PB Photo of the Year Hall of Fame and they could walk away with some serious cash.

Think you have a banger? This is your chance to see how you stack up against the best mountain bike photographers in the world. Any images uploaded during 2019, or up until Friday, January 24, 2020, can be nominated. You can nominate up to three photos of your own, or from other photographers, for entry into the competition. Last year over 300,000 votes were cast until ultimately one image came out on top.

You have until Friday, January 24, 2020 at 9am PST to nominate your favourite shots.

How Does it Work?

All photos taken and uploaded to Pinkbike during 2019 and before Friday, January 24, 2020 that are nominated by users are eligible. Each Pinkbike user can nominate up to 3 different photos into the contest (see how to nominate below). The judges will then spend several sleepless nights narrowing the nominated photos down to 32, after which we will open things up to the public. We will pit each photo against another photo in a college basketball bracket-like showdown. At this point, users will vote on the match ups and the photo with the most votes will move onto the next round. So 32 photos will narrow down to 16, then 8, 4, 2 until there is a single photo deemed 2019 Pinkbike Photo of the Year.

The winner that is chosen by you, the readers, will receive a cheque thanks to Jenson USA, as well as the title of 2019 Pinkbike Photo of the Year.

Photos can be nominated by any user by clicking the 'Nominate this Photo' link. All nominated photos will then be viewed by the panel of judges and narrowed down to 32.

• Everyone is eligible except for judges
• Only one photo can be selected from each photographer into the final 32
• You must be the photographer who took the photo and then have uploaded it onto your personal Pinkbike account to be eligible
Nominations close, Friday, January 24, 2020 at 9am PST.

• Winner will receive $5,000
• Runner Up will receive $3,000
• Semi Finalists will each receive $1,000

Full rules and regulations can be found here.

Keep the photographers' and riders' names hidden to keep the selection process truly based on photography.

How will I suck up to people then? Whenever I like Sterling's photos, I hope he will write to me and thank me... Hey, I want to know how you guys vote because I am incapable of taking irrelevant decisions myself. I... I need a poll, I think... you know what, screw Sterling. I want to know who is some new, up and comming photographer so that I can feel pretentious and better than others. Oh Eric Shitake is so good, legend! It's not about photography people, it's about taking credit for making a choice, about feeling proud to be in position to choose. Yes. It makes no fkng sense what so ever but I want credit. I picked. I was in every tier. Throw a bike at me, I don't know.

what about a contest where there is no head to head elimination and it goes by most votes per round?
  • 3 1
In My Very Particular and Humblest Opinion in the past contest I saw to many strong pictures confronted in the first round ,
Can You rank the photos on a numbers of uploads basis so it can be arranged in a worldcup scheme . Like #8 vs #1 , #7 vs #2 and so. In other way the results are set
it up before the contest start

There should be a similar contest for "Most Mediocre Photo of the Year." Give us regular guy's a chance to flaunt our Insta pics.
  • 27 2
Or camera requirement must cost less than 300.
  • 80 1
@chyu: Damn, my iPhone wouldn't even qualify for that requirement.

 So Polaroids for the win!!!

Will there be categories of cliche? Dust explosion, panoramic vista with tiny bike in foreground, euro table etc?
  • 7 0
Hopefully not a whole bunch of photos that could just as easily be taken by suspending a mannequin on a bike in front of the camera, track stands in some semi-angular gnarly attitude trying to simulate actual performance, or any more dirt jumps shots that appear posed and probably took 200 takes (hence could have been done better with a suspended mannequin)

I'm leaning my road bike over for a killer still life right now...

it'd be great if the winning shot is of an actual trail this year!
  • 1 0
Why not have a stab. Not in the league of past winners, but at least it'll be cool to share some of the fab places & trails I've had the privilege to ride in the past year.

Nominated a couple from this gallery:

Hoping that a tandem mtn bike will finally make it to the win this year.
  • 1 0
Seem to recall a 24hr race that a couple do on a tandem - naked
  • 2 0
@skiwenric: Would be cool to see them in the tops but pb is pretty conservative and I can't recall seeing any naked mtn bikers get voted up in the photo of the year contest
  • 3 0
@hbar314: I bet they would feature some naked mtn bikers if the pixelated bits were Kashima coated
  • 1 0
@JamesPA: per Wikipedia kashima coating offers "better lubrication and less abrasion and wear". So... its functional.
  • 1 0
@LifeIsGouda: Good catch. I edited wikipedia to be closer to the truth of its uselessness.

@el-nombre: quite possibly! I doubt it had the back wheel hanging over the cliff, but yeah, it's a popular spot!
