Track Walk Photo Epic: Marching into Battle - Val di Sole World Cup 2018

Benvenuto to northern Italy for the continuation of an ongoing war we like to call the UCI DH World Cup. Coming into the fourth round it's been damn entertaining to this point with the racing going down at two classic venues and the one freshie. Val Di Sole is another course on the vintage side that needs little by way of introduction or reminder as to its notoriety as a separator of bike riding talent.

This year we have a track that's highly similar to the 2017 version of 'Black Snake'... anaconda sized roots and boulders bigger than your average jungle animal, although this time there's nothing in the way of fluffy, golden loam and more to the order of thick, dark mud that could easily get deeper and slicker over the next two days... Storms are forecast and they won't be pretty.

Since its debut 10 years ago where Gee and Rachel Atherton famously took the World Champs first and only sibling double, we've seen 8 races here on the World stage and it's worth remembering that Aaron Gwin accounts for half of them and Rachel Atherton even more at 5 from 8. That said, it is mighty tight at the top right now and anything can happen when the heavens open.

The big natural step-down that always sorted a few riders out and caused some of the gnarliest crashes over the past few years as been smoothed out a bit. While it looks a bit easier the added speed coming in and the larger jump will certainly be a different type of challenge.

I looked around but couldn't find out what's up with Dakotah Norton. Crash looked bad but never heard any follow up on his condition.

right I've been searching but can't find anything, he bodied a tree real hard at crankworks. I figure a broken collar bone from the looks of the crash

According to his Instagram, he's "excited to be racing" this weekend. Sounds like the injury may have been a dislocation that was put back into place quickly, he even considered racing the following weekend at Les Gets (again, just going of what he's said on Instagram)

“Luca Shaw is the fastest rider in the world right now”

I know it’s about time for him to grab a win, but what makes you think he’s actually the fastest in the world?
  • 4 2
He got 2nd in Croatia then qualified first the last 2 races and was in the green on his race runs till he flatted and crashed. It was definitely a bold statement but you can be the fastest and not be in first place, consistency and luck play a part too!

-Are you racing this weekend Jack?
-YEAH!, nah.

The course looks very tightly taped. Would be nice if they could widen it a bit - add more lines.

Why can't the manufacturers just make tyres that are already in a 'cut-down' design for these conditions, to save those poor fellas from doing it manually?

Specialized Hillbilly is another production "cut-spike". But, much like the wheel building days of old, mechanics also like to do special things for their racers so they not only cut the height but add ramp to some of the spikes.

It also makes ordering tires much easier. They'll place an order for 100 mud tires and cut what they need, rather than 70 mud and 30 pre-cut, when it turns out they only needed 30 mud and 70 pre-cut given the weather that they can't plan for.

'Luca Shaw is the fastest rider in the world right now." A very bold statement indeed, and one which doesn't quite add up at present. Great photo epic though.

Great photography. Epic even, just like the spelling. Did someone have a gun to their head?

Just an FYI- the photographers are on track/in the pits all day, and then they spend 5-6 hours editing the pictures, so when it comes time to add captions, it's often midnight-1am their time. Cut them some slack.
